The digital images generated by remote sensors often contain noises that are inherent in the process of imaging and transmission. The application of digital processing techniques greatly enhances the ability to extract information on surface targets from remote sensing data. When digital images are used with high spatial resolution, one of the problems emerging the high variability of targets presents in such images. From the computational point of view, the use of partial differential equations is favored by the large number of numerical methods showed in the literature. Many of the models are considered non-complex both from the mathematical and computational standpoints, due to the characteristics of explicit equations. This work uses techniques of the partial differential equations (PDE) and mathematical morphology to extract cartographic features in digital images of the remote sensing. The selected study area corresponds to an image containing part of the Mário Covas Ring Road, located in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo (SP), Brazil. The results are promising and show the high potential of using mathematical morphology in the field of cartography.

In this paper, we have evaluated the multispectral module implemented in the CARTOMORPH software, which is a public domain software under development by the mathematical morphology research group at FCT/UNESP. The aim of CARTOMORPH is to provide an open software with feature extraction methods and a library that contains a variety of implemented code (functions) that can be easily operated by users through graphical interface. The multispectral image processing system has been developed to allow feature discrimination by operations between bands from Remote Sensing images. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was selected to be implemented on CARTOMORPH because of its acknowledged performance for monitoring of vegetation and cartographic applications. The experiments were applied to multispectral bands from Quick Bird image and the results were compared with those provided by the SPRING and ENVI software. Former is a Brazilian free software, developed by National Institute for Space Research-INPE and dedicated to image processing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, as well as ENVI, which is a traditional remote sensing image analysis system. The results prove that the implementation of this module is correct, allowing potential usage in the field of cartography and for environmental applications.

One of the most studied topics in cartography is the extraction of interest cartographic features. Using the image of the cartographic feature extracted, the researchers can provide the update of the cartographic maps, more easily, and study other topics like the area of the cartographic feature. For this reason many automatic routines were created with the intent to perform the extraction of the cartographic features of interest. However, some features can not be found by the algorithm, so the current article aims to show the results with a semiautomatic routine where the user can interact with the algorithm choosing some options and showing some features of the extraction"s goals to help the routine realize the necessary. The results found until now with this algorithm are enough to say that this can be used to realize the cartographic features extraction independent of where it will be used for.

The Use of Mathematical Morphology in the Detection of Impact Craters on Digital Images of the Martian Surface

Planet Mars"s exploration has been more and more intense with the relevant number of probes sent for acquiring images and information about this planet. So, there is already a large file of orbital images of the Martian surface, and the identification and counting of craters on these images has a crucial importance about studying this planet. Due this prominence we developed in this paper an approach for impact crater detection from digital images of Martian surface by using morphology mathematic tools. The used images as study areas were obtained by THEMIS (thermal emission imaging system) camera, on board at Mars Odyssey probe, launched on 2001 and orbiting the planet until nowadays. The morphologic routine developed for impact craters detection has encompassed transformations to pre-processing, filtering, binarization and segmentation by watershed. The results have proved the feasibility of using mathematic morphology related to impact craters detection on Martian surface by orbital images. These obtained results can support projects on several knowledge areas which have interest on Martian surface exploration, such as cartography, geology, physics, astronomy among others.

Loggerhead Sea Turtles Hand-Reared in Captivity: Isotopic Insights into Their Inherent Dietary Variation

Stable isotope analysis is a widely used method for gathering ecological insights into the diet and feeding habitats of various species. While captive studies often limit lethal sampling and differ from wild conditions, they offer valuable insights into inherent isotopic variations among individuals, which are often assumed to reflect differences between natural populations. In the Sea Turtle Conservation Program, loggerhead turtle hatchlings from different nests were fed. Necropsies were conducted on turtles that died during this period, obtaining bone fragments for analysis. We evaluated the isotopic variation of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in bone tissue across six turtle nests (n = 66 samples) and assessed differences in Straight Carapace Length (SCL, n = 71 samples). Using SIBER and nicheROVER in R, we calculated niche width and overlap, while the simmr package determined primary prey assimilation. Despite feeding the hatchlings the same prey, we observed variations in nitrogen isotope assimilation between nests. Nests 4 and 6 had a niche width >1.8‰, indicating consistent consumption frequencies across all prey and >70% niche overlap with other nests. In contrast, nests 1 and 2 showed a narrower niche width (Mugil sp. constituted the primary diet component (>40%) across all groups. This study demonstrates how factors like competition or prey preference can influence the assimilation of diet, even when the source remains constant (inherent variation).
