Psychometric scales,commonly used to gauge sexual function,can sometimes be influenced by response biases.In our researchfrom June 2020 to April 2021,we examined the accuracy of self-reported sexual function scales.We invited patients from theDepartment of Infertility and Sexual Medicine at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University(Guangzhou,China),whohave male sexual dysfunction,to participate by filling out a self-reported version of a specific questionnaire.In addition,they wentthrough a clinician-assisted version of this questionnaire,encompassing tools such as the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool(PEDT),the 6-item International Index of Erectile Function(IIEF-6),the Erection Hardness Scale(EHS),and the MasturbationErection Index(MEI).Using the clinician-assisted version as a reference,we categorized patients and applied various statisticalmethods,such as the Chi-square test,intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC),logistic regression,and the Bland–Altman plot,to gauge reliability.In our study with 322 participants,we found that while there were no notable discrepancies in error ratesbased on our categorization,certain scales showed significant differences in terms of overestimation and underestimation,withthe exception of the PEDT.The positive diagnosis rate consistency between the self-reported and clinician-assisted versions wasobserved.High ICC values between the two versions across the scales were indicative of remarkable reliability.Our findings showthat the self-reported versions of tools such as EHS,IIEF-6,MEI,and PEDT are credible and hold clinical reliability.However,employing a dual-diagnosis approach might be more prudent to circumvent potential misdiagnoses.

α-Glucosidase inhibitors are effective in controlling postprandial hyperglycemia,which play crucial roles in the management of type 2 diabetes.Protocatechuic acid(PCA)is one of phenolic acids existing not only in various plant foods but also as a major microbial metabolite of dietary anthocyanins in the large colon.The present study investigated the inhibitory mechanism of PCA on a-glucosidase in vitro and examined its effect on postprandial blood glucose levels in vivo.Results from in vitro experiments demonstrated that PCA was a mix-type inhibitor of a-glucosidase.Driven by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions,PCA reversibly bound withα-glucosidase to form a stable a-glucosidase-PCA complex in a spontaneous manner.The computational simulation found that PCA could insert into the active cavity of a-glucosidase and establish hydrogen bonds with catalytic amino acid residues.PCA binding aroused the steric hindrance for substrates to enter active sites and caused the structural changes of interacted catalytic amino acid residues.PCA also exhibited postprandial hypoglycemic capacity in diabetic mice.This study may provide the theoretical basis for the application of PCA as an active ingredient of functional foods in dietary management of diabetes.

Using a novel hemostatic peptide solution to prevent bleeding after endoscopic submucosal dissection of a gastric tumor

BACKGROUND Endoscopic mucosal dissection has become the standard treatment for early gastric cancer.However,post-endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)ulcer occurs in 4.4%of patients.This study hypothesized whether applying PuraStat,a novel hemostatic peptide solution,prevents post-ESD bleeding.AIM To investigate the preventive potential of PuraStat,a hemostatic formulation,against bleeding in post-ESD gastric ulcers.METHODS Between May 2022 and March 2023,101 patients(Group P)underwent ESD for gastric diseases at our hospital and received PuraStat(2 mL)for post-ESD ulcers.We retrospectively compared this group with a control group(Group C)com-prising 297 patients who underwent ESD for gastric diseases at our hospital between April 2017 and March 2021.P values<0.05 on two-sided tests indicated significance.RESULTS Post-ESD bleeding occurred in 6(5.9%)(95%CI:2.8-12.4)and 20(6.7%)(95%CI:4.4-10.2)patients in Groups P and C,respectively,with no significant between-group difference.The relative risk was 1.01(95%CI:0.95-1.07).The lesser curvature or anterior wall was the bleeding site in all 6 patients who experienced postoperative bleeding in Group P.In multivariate analysis,the odds ratios for resection diameter≥50 mm and oral anticoagulant use were 6.63(95%CI:2.52-14.47;P=0.0001)and 4.04(1.26-0.69;P=0.0164),respectively.The adjusted odds ratio of post-ESD bleeding and PuraStat was 1.28(95%CI:0.28-2.15).CONCLUSION PuraStat application is not associated with post-ESD bleeding.However,the study suggests that gravitational forces may affect the effectiveness of applied PuraStat.

Vegetable oils are a source of energy, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins useful for human health care and development. These oils also contribute to organoleptic quality of their products’ derivatives. However, their chemical and physical properties can be modified by the mode of their extraction, storage and distribution. These modifications might negatively affect the nutritional quality of the oils. The goals of this study were to: sample different vegetable oils for cosmetic or dietary use marketed in Cameroon, and verify purity and oxidation states of each kind of oil through determination of its acidity, iodine, peroxide, saponification, refractive indexes and the conformity of the labeling. The carotene content, the level of polar components and specific absorbance were also determined. As the result, six oils namely palm, palm kernel, coconut, black cumin, peanut and shea butter were collected. Apart from labeling, chemicals and physicals parameters analyzed were generally in accordance with the Cameroonian and Codex Alimentarius standard. This study suggests that vegetable oils sampled in the Cameroonian market may not expose consumers to lipid oxidation products generating pathological oxidative stress and inflammation. However, efforts in application of existing standard need to be done as far as labeling are concerned.

Coronaviruses are pathogens thought to primarily affect the respiratory tracts of humans.The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)in 2019 was also marked mainly by its symptoms of respiratory illness,which were named coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Since its initial discovery,many other symptoms have been linked to acute SARS-CoV-2 infections as well as to the long-term outcomes of COVID-19 patients.Among these symptoms are different categories of cardiovascular diseases(CVDs),which continue to be the main cause of death worldwide.The World Health Organization estimates that 17.9 million people die from CVDs each year,accounting for~32%of all deaths globally.Physical inactivity is one of the most important behavioral risk factors for CVDs.The COVID-19 pandemic has affected CVDs as well as the physical activity in different ways.Here,we provide an overview of the current status as well as future challenges and possible solutions.
