Mechanical circulatory and/or respiratory assistance with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has become a standard of care for patients with circulatory (venoarterial) and/or respiratory (venovenous) failure refractory to standard therapies. Adult patients with congenital heart disease are an increasingly recognized and growing population and include various groups, such as undiagnosed cases in childhood and palliated and/or corrected cases, which require subsequent care because of residual lesions, cardiac arrest/insufficiency, and arrhythmias, among other conditions. In addition, these patients are prone to developing pathologies that are typical of adulthood with a generally increased risk of morbidity and mortality because of their low reserves and organic damage associated with the underlying heart disease, which makes them candidates for ECMO. These patients represent an additional challenge in this therapy because malformations and the presence of a shunt can generally affect the usual cannulation methods and hemodynamic and oximetry monitoring. Thus, the configuration decision must be made on a case-by-case basis. Here, we present a cannulation method, venopulmonary artery ECMO, which provides hemodynamic and respiratory support, and may be ideal for patients with shunts and/or right ventricular dysfunction. To our knowledge, this is the first report of this configuration in patients with congenital heart diseases.

Nitrogen is critical for cell growth, proliferation, and function. Amino acid (AA) catabolism is a major source of intracellular nitrogen for biosynthesis but also generates the nitrogen-containing molecule ammonia (NH3+), which can accumulate to toxic levels in a cell if not exported to the circulation and detoxified by the urea cycle in the liver. In a recent paper in Nature Immunology, Tang et al. [1] discovered a functional urea cycle in memory T cells, which metabolizes ammonia, prevents its toxic accumulation.

Background: Physical activity(PA) during pregnancy provides physical and psychological benefits for mother and child. U.S. guidelines recommend ≥30 min of moderate exercise for healthy pregnant women most days of the week; however, most women do not meet these recommendations. Theory assists in identifying salient determinants of health behavior to guide health promotion interventions; however, the application of theory to examine PA among pregnant women has not been examined cohesively among multiple levels of influence(e.g.,intrapersonal, interpersonal, neighborhood/environmental, and organizational/political). Subsequently, this systematic review aims to identify and evaluate the use of health behavior theory in studies that examine PA during ***: Articles published before July 2014 were obtained from Pub Med and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria applied were:(1) empiricallybased;(2) peer-reviewed;(3) measured factors related to PA;(4) comprised a pregnant sample; and(5) applied theory. Fourteen studies were included. Each study's application of theory and theoretical constructs were ***: Various theories were utilized to explain and predict PA during pregnancy; yet, the majority of these studies only focused on intrapersonal level determinants. Five theoretical frameworks were applied across the studies—all but one at the intrapersonal level. Few determinants identified were from the interpersonal, neighborhood/environmental, or organizational/political ***: This systematic review synthesized the literature on theoretical constructs related to PA during pregnancy. Interpersonal, community,and societal levels remain understudied. Future research should employ theory-driven multi-level determinants of PA to reflect the interacting factors influencing PA during this critical period in the life course.

Black carbon(BC)is one of the short-lived air pollutants that contributes significantly to aerosol radiative forcing and global climate *** is emitted by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels,biofuels,and *** environments are quite complex and thus,the use of mobile jointly with fixed monitoring provides a better understanding of the dynamics of BC distribution in such *** present study addresses the measurement of BC concentration using real-time mobile and ambient monitoring in Barranquilla,an industrialized urban area of the Colombian Caribbean.A microaethalometer(MA200)and an aethalometer(AE33)were used for measuring the BC *** absorption Ångström exponent(AAE)values were determined for the study area,for identifying the BC emission *** results of the ambient sampling show that vehicle traffic emissions prevail;however,the influence of biomass burning was also *** mean ambient BC concentration was found to be 1.04±1.03μg/m^(3) and varied between 0.5 and 4.0μg/m^(3).From the mobile measurements obtained in real traffic conditions on the road,a much higher average value of 16.1±16.5μg/m^(3) was *** parts of the city showed BC concentrations higher than 20μg/m^(3).The spatial distribution of BC concentration shows that vehicle emissions and traffic jams,a consequence of road and transport infrastructure,are the factors that most affect the BC concentration.A comparison of results obtained from two aethalometers indicates that the concentrations measured by MA200 are 9%lower than those measured by *** AAE obtained was found to vary between 1.1 and 1.6,indicating vehicular emissions as the most crucial *** addition,it was observed that the BC concentration on working days was 2.5 times higher than on the weekends in the case of mobile monitoring and 1.5 times higher in the case of ambient monitoring.

Reproductive and life history patterns in reptiles are tightly related to the environmental conditions,so male reproductive cycles have been historically characterized as continuous,for tropical lizards,or seasonal,for temperate ***,males of liolaemus and Phymaturus lizards(liolaemidae),from cold temperate climates of high altitudes or latitudes in Argentina and Chile,have developed a variety of reproductive cycles to coordinate with the short female reproductive season and to deal with the low frequency of reproductive females in the *** gonadal histology and morphological analysis,we describe the male reproductive biology,fat storage and sexual dimorphism of the viviparous lizards liolaemus sarmientoi and liolaemus magellanicus that inhabit an austral grass steppe at 51°S,in the southern limit of the American *** of *** and *** are reproductively available during the entire activity season of approximately 5 *** addition,males of both species exhibit greater body sizes than females in morphological variables relevant in sexual ***,females of both species exhibit larger inter-limb length than conspecific males,which suggests fecundity selection to increase space for a larger litter *** continuous sperm production throughout the activity season allows these liolaemids to mate at any time when females ovulate,representing a selective advantage to deal with the short activity season and the adversities of the cold environment they inhabit.

Background: little is known about the factors that may influence women's adherence to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) using longitudinal data. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlates of long-term physical activity(PA) participation among ***: Female data from Waves I, III, and IV(n = 5381) of the National longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health(Add Health) were used for the analysis. The outcome of PA adherence was operationalized as(1) consistently physically active(at least 5 instances during the week)in both Waves III and IV(during adulthood), and(2) consistently not physically active or only physically active in either Wave III or IV. Predictor variables from Wave I(during adolescence) included race/ethnicity, PA level, self-perception of being physically fit, general health status, attempt to change weight, parents' income level, parents' education, well-being, depression, access to PA resources, days of physical education(PE), and grade level. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were utilized to estimate the adjusted odds ratio(a OR) and 95% confidence interval(95%CI) for the outcome ***: PA levels during adolescence significantly predicted PA adherence(a OR = 1.67, 95%CI: 1.35–2.05). Additionally, wanting to lose weight(a OR = 1.49, 95%CI: 1.20–1.85), using fitness center in the neighborhood(a OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.05–1.58), and having 5 days of PE a week(a OR = 1.48, 95%CI: 1.09–2.02) were significant predictors. Women who did not perceive being physically fit(a OR = 0.65, 95%CI: 0.44–0.95)and Black, non-Hispanics(a OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.44–0.82) were less likely to adhere to ***: The findings suggested that physically active adolescents were more likely to become active adults. Future research should address interventions(e.g., PE program, community resources) that may promote lifetime PA in women, with the goal of decreasing morbidity and mortality.

Synthesis and cytotoxicity of 28-carboxymethoxy lupane *** of 28-O-acylation over 28-O-alkylation of betulm by ethyl bromoacetate

28-Carboxymethoxy lupane tritepenoids 3 and 4 were synthesized by alkylation of betulin with the THP protected 2- hydroxyethyl iodide followed by oxidation and reduction. Direct reaction of betulin （5） or betulone （10） with ethyl bromoacetate led to 28-O-acylation, instead of 28-O-alkylation. The targeted compounds 3 and 4 were not cytotoxic at the highest concentration tested （75 μmol/l）, suggesting that elongation of the chain length at the 28-position in both betulinic acid （1） and betulonic acid （2） was detrimental to the cytotoxicity. The acylation products 28-O-bromoacetates （Sa, 8b and 11） and 28-O-methoxyacetate 13 exhibited cytotoxicity against several cancer cell lines tested.
