Scalable gas-phase processes to create nanostructured particles

The properties of nanoparticles are often different from those of larger grains of the same solid material because of their very large specific surface area. This enables many novel applications, but properties such as agglomeration can also hinder their potential use. By creating nanostructured particles one can take optimum benefit from the desired properties while minimizing the adverse effects. We aim at developing high-precision routes for scalable production of nanostructured particles. Two gas-phase synthesis routes are explored. The first one - covering nanoparticles with a continuous layer - is carried out using atomic layer deposition in a fluidized bed. Through fluidization, the full surface area of the nanoparticles becomes available. With this process, particles can be coated with an ultra-thin film of constant and well-tunable thickness. For the second route - attaching nanoparticles to larger particles - a novel approach using electrostatic forces is demonstrated. The micron-sized particles are charged with one polarity using tribocharging. Using electrospraying, a spray of charged nanoparticles with opposite polarity is generated. Their charge prevents agglomeration, while it enhances efficient deposition at the surface of the host particle. While the proposed processes offer good potential for scale-up, further work is needed to realize large-scale processes.

Investigation of Li-ion transport in Li7P3S11 and solid-state lithium batteries

The high Li-ion conductivity of the Li7P3S11 sulfide-based solid electrolyte makes it a promising candidate for all-solid-state lithium batteries. The Li-ion transport over electrode-electrolyte and electrolyteelectrolyte interfaces, vital for the performance of solid-state batteries, is investigated by impedance spectroscopy and solid-state NmR experiments. An all-solid-state Li-ion battery is assembled with the Li7P3S11 electrolyte, nano-Li2S cathode and Li-In foil anode, showing a relatively large initial discharge capacity of 1139.5 m Ah/g at a current density of 0.064 m A/cm^ 2 retaining 850.0 m Ah/g after 30 cycles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggests that the decrease in capacity over cycling is due to the increased interfacial resistance between the electrode and the electrolyte. 1D exchange ^7Li NmR quantifies the interfacial Li-ion transport between the uncycled electrode and the electrolyte, resulting in a diffusion coefficient of 1.70(3) ×10^-14cm^2/s at 333 K and an energy barrier of 0.132 e V for the Li-ion transport between Li2S cathode and Li7P3S11 electrolyte. This indicates that the barrier for Li-ion transport over the electrode-electrolyte interface is small. However, the small diffusion coefficient for Li-ion diffusion between the Li2S and the Li7P3S11 suggests that these contact interfaces between electrode and electrolyte are relatively scarce, challenging the performance of these solid-state batteries.

This paper explores an alternative to the standard method of studying the responsivities （the input-output gain） and other behaviours of detectors at low electron energy. The research does not aim to compare the results of differently doped n＋p detectors; its purpose is to provide an alternative characterization method （using scanning electron microscopy） to those used in previous studies on the responsivity ofn＋p doped detectors as a function of the electron radiation energy and other interface oarameters.

We present a direct-write patterning method for the realization of electroluminescent(EL)line art using a surface-emissive light-emitting electrochemical cell with its electrolyte and EL material separated into a bilayer *** line-art emission is achieved through subtractive patterning of the electrolyte layer with a stylus,and the single-step patterning can be either manual for personalization and uniqueness or automated for high throughput and *** demonstrate that the light emission is effectuated by cation-assisted electron injection in the patterned regions and that the resulting emissive lines can be as narrow as a few *** versatility of the method is demonstrated through the attainment of a wide range of light-emission patterns and colors using a variety of different *** that this low-voltage-driven and easy-to-modify luminescent line-art technology could be of interest for emerging applications,such as active packaging and personalized gadgets.

Oxidative stress physiology in relation to life history traits of a free-living vertebrate:the spotted snow skink,Niveoscincus ocellatus

Recent research suggests that oxidative stress,via its links to metabolism and senescence,is a key mechanism linking life history traits such as fecundity and growth with survival;however,this has rarely been put under empirical scrutiny within free-living *** a wild population of live-bearing skinks,we explored how plasma antioxidant activity(OXY),reactive oxidative metabolites(ROm),and the estimated oxidative stress index are associated with female and male life *** found that male skinks have a significantly higher ROm and estimated oxidative stress index than female skinks,but this was not accompanied by a sex difference in *** sexes showed a non-linear association between OXY and age,indicating that the oldest and youngest individuals had the lowest ***,female skinks with high OXY showed a decreased probability of survival to the following ***,we found no significant associations between female reproductive investment(litter size or litter mass)or parturition date(***)and oxidative ***,our results offer mixed support for a role of oxidative stress in mediating life history traits and suggest that future studies need to explore oxidative stress during vitellogenesis in addition to using an intra-individual approach to understand the cost of reproduction and patterns of aging.

Use of petrological and organic geochemical data in determining hydrocarbon generation potential of coals:miocene coals of malatya Basin(Eastern Anatolia-Turkey)

With this study,the hydrocarbon generation potential of miocene aged coals around Arguvan-Parçikan in the northern district of malatya province was evaluated with the aid of petrological and organic geochemical *** to organic petrography,coal quality data,and low thermal maturity,the Arguvan-Parçikan coals are of high-ash,high-sulfur subbituminous B/C *** organic fraction of the coals is mostly comprised of humic group macerals,with small percentages derived from the inertinite and liptinite *** mineral matter of the coals is comprised mainly of calcite and clay *** total organic carbon(TOC,wt%)values of the shale and coal samples are between 2.61 wt%and 43.02 wt%,and the hydrogen index values are between 73 and 229 mg HC/g ***(T_(max),PI),huminite/vitrinite reflectance(R_(o),%),and biomarker ratios CPI,Pr/Ph ratio,Ts/(Ts+Tm)ratio,C_(32) homohopane ratio(22S/22S+22R)and C_(29)ββ/(ββ+ααsterane ratio)indicate that the organic matter of the studied coals is thermally *** all these data are taken together,miocene aged coals around Arguvan are suitable for hydrocarbon generation,especially gas,in terms of organic matter type(Type III and Type II/III mixed),organic matter amount(>10 wt%TOC),however,low liptinitic macerals(mg HC/g TOC)and low thermal maturity values inhibit the hyrocarbon generation.

Amylopectin structure and crystallinity explains variation in digestion kinetics of starches across botanic sources in an in vitro pig model

Guanylyl cyclase C signaling axis and colon cancer prevention

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a major cause of cancerrelated mortality and morbidity worldwide. While improved treatments have enhanced overall patient outcome, disease burden encompassing quality of life, cost of care, and patient survival has seen little benefit. Consequently, additional advances in CRC treatments remain important, with an emphasis on preventative measures. Guanylyl cyclase C(GUCY2C), a transmembrane receptor expressed on intestinal epithelial cells, plays an important role in orchestrating intestinal homeostatic mechanisms. These effects are mediated by the endogenous hormones guanylin(GUCA2A) and uroguanylin(GUCA2B), which bind and activate GUCY2 C to regulate proliferation, metabolism and barrier function in intestine. Recent studies have demonstrated a link between GUCY2 C silencing and intestinal dysfunction, including tumorigenesis. Indeed, GUCY2 C silencing by the near universal loss of its paracrine hormone ligands increases colon cancer susceptibility in animals and humans. GUCY2C's role as a tumor suppressor has opened the door to a new paradigm for CRC prevention by hormone replacement therapy using synthetic hormone analogs, such as the FDA-approved oral GUCY2 C ligand linaclotide(Linzess^(Tm)). Here we review the known contributions of the GUCY2 C signaling axis to CRC, and relate them to a novel clinical strategy targeting tumor chemoprevention.
