The number and composition of species in a community can be quantified withα-diversity indices,including species richness(R),simpson’s index(D),and the shannon-Wiener index(H΄).In forest communities,there are large variations in tree size among species and individu-als of the same species,which result in differences in eco-logical processes and ecosystem ***,tree size inequality(TsI)has been largely neglected in studies using the available diversity *** TsI in the diameter at breast height(DBH)data for each of 99920 m×20 m forest census quadrats was quantified using the Gini index(GI),a measure of the inequality of size *** generalized performance equation was used to describe the rotated and right-shifted Lorenz curve of the cumulative proportion of DBH and the cumulative proportion of number of trees per *** also examined the relationships ofα-diversity indices with the GI using correlation *** generalized performance equation effectively described the rotated and right-shifted Lorenz curve of DBH distributions,with most root-mean-square errors(990 out of 999 quadrats)beingsignificant positive correlations between each of threeα-diversity indices(i.e.,R,D,and H’)and the ***,the total abundance of trees in each quadrat did not significantly influence the *** means that the TsI increased with increasing spe-cies ***,two new indices are proposed that can balanceα-diversity against the extent of TsI in the com-munity:(1−GI)×D,and(1−GI)×H’.These new indices were significantly correlated with the original D and H΄,and did not increase the extent of variation within each group of *** study presents a useful tool for quantifying both species diversity and the variation in tree sizes in forest communities,especially in the face of cumulative species loss under global climate change.

α-diversity describes species diversity at local *** simpson’s and shannon-Wiener indices are widely used to characterizeα-diversity based on species abundances within a fixed study site(e.g.,a quadrat or plot).Although such indices provide overall diversity estimates that can be analyzed,their values are not spatially continuous nor applicable in theory to any point within the study region,and thus they cannot be treated as spatial covariates for analyses of other ***,we extended the simpson’s and shannon-Wiener indices to create point estimates ofα-diversity for any location based on spatially explicit species occurrences within different bandwidths(i.e.,radii,with the location of interest as the center).For an arbitrary point in the study region,species occurrences within the circle plotting the bandwidth were weighted according to their distance from the center using a tri-cube kernel function,with occurrences closer to the center having greater weight than more distant *** novel kernel-basedα-diversity indices were tested using a tree dataset from a 400 m×400 m study region comprising a 200 m×200 m core region surrounded by a 100-m width buffer *** newly extendedα-diversity indices did not disagree qualitatively with the traditional indices,and the former were slightly lower than the latter bysent work demonstrates the feasibility of using kernel-basedα-diversity indices to estimate diversity at any location in the study region and allows them to be used as quantifiable spatial covariates or predictors for other dependent variables of interest in future ecological *** continuousα-diversity indices are useful to compare and monitor species trends in space and time,which is valuable for conservation practitioners.

With more than a fifth of the world’s population and less than 10% of the world’s arable land modernizing China’s agriculture may be the key to solving China’s looming food security crisis of the 21 st *** has been made in solving the country’s food security,but rural-urban inequality continues despite being a goal of development *** in other industries have been successful at building economic capacity from the ground up with policy experimentation,but why not agriculture? Why was one of the most critical industries approached differently? To answer these questions a comparative case study analysis between the Torch Program and Dragon Head Enterprises found that the threat of peasant instability as a result of failed local experiments was too great and a top-down developmental approach was pursued instead.

This review evaluates the role of Glivec in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia and other malignant tumors. Preclinical and clinical evidence showed that Glivec demonstrated a potent and specific inhibition on BCR-ABL positive leukemias and other malignant tumors in which overexpression of c-kit and PDGFR-b played a major role in their pathogenesis. Glivec has induced complete hematologic responses in up to 98% of patients evaluated in clinical trials. It's a very successful drug that supported the idea of targeted therapy through inhibition of tyrosine kinases. Although it's still in the early stages of clinical development and the resistance to Glivec remains to be a problem needed further study, a great deal has been learned from these research and observation. And with the increasing data, molecular targeting therapy will play much more important role in the treatment of malignant tumors. With the better understanding of the pathogenesis of malignant tumors, well-designed drugs targeting the specific molecular abnormalities with higher efficacy and lower side effect will benefit numerous patients with malignant tumors.

Neurological heterotopic ossification(NHO)is a debilitating condition where bone forms in soft tissue,such as muscle surrounding the hip and knee,following an injury to the brain or spinal *** abnormal formation of bone can result in nerve impingement,pain,contractures and impaired *** are often diagnosed with NHO after the bone tissue has completely mineralised,leaving invasive surgical resection the only remaining treatment *** resection of NHO creates potential for added complications,particularly in patients with concomitant injury to the central nervous system(CNs).Although recent work has begun to shed light on the physiological mechanisms involved in NHO,there remains a significant knowledge gap related to the prognostic biomarkers and prophylactic treatments which are necessary to prevent NHO and optimise patient *** article reviews the current understanding pertaining to NHO epidemiology,pathobiology,biomarkers and treatment *** particular,we focus on how concomitant CNs injury may drive ectopic bone formation and discuss considerations for treating polytrauma patients with *** conclude that understanding of the pathogenesis of NHO is rapidly advancing,and as such,there is the strong potential for future research to unearth methods capable of identifying patients likely to develop NHO,and targeted treatments to prevent its manifestation.

streptococcus pneumoniae is a medically important pathogen capable of causing human infections of pneumonia, bacteremia, otitis media, and meningitis. Although there are vaccinations available, infections with s. pneumoniae still remains a global problem. s. pneumoniae is a highly adaptable bacterial species with numerous serotypes based on capsular polysaccharides. The different serotypes vary in their ability to colonize and causing pathology. Here we compared the regulation of five different virulence factors from four common serotypes of s. pneumoniae that vary in their carriage, morbidity, and mortality rates in the human population using two different in vitro methods, broth and cell culture. We determine that there is variation of virulence factor gene regulation within a serotype using two different culture methods, and variation between the serotypes in the same culture condition. The regulation of genes appeared to have a correlation with the ability of the various serotypes to grow in broth culture, adhere to cultured lung cells, and invade the cultured lung cells, as serotypes that shared similar regulation of virulence factors tended to behave similarly in culture. Many studies with s. pneumoniae rely on the use of one selected serotype, but since there is a wide variation in the growth and regulatory mechanisms of these bacteria. As demonstrated here, future studies should utilize more strains in models before concluding mechanisms of pathobiology.
