’Emulsion locks’ for the containment of hydrocarbons during surfactant flushing

Reversible double water in oil in water(W/O/W)emulsions were developed to contain subsurface hydrocarbon spills during their remediation using surfactant *** emulsions were prepared by emulsifying CaCl2 solutions in canola oil,and subsequently by emulsifying the W/O emulsions in aqueous sodium alginate *** formation of double emulsions was confirmed with confocal and optical *** double emulsions reversed and gelled when mixed with the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)and cocamidopropyl betaine(CPB).Gels can act as’emulsion locks’to prevent spreading of the hydrocarbon plume from the areas treated with surfactant flushing,as shown in sand column *** rheology was used to quantify the viscoelastic moduli increase(gelation)upon mixing the double emulsion with SDS and *** was more effective than CPB in gelling the double *** and SDS could adsorb at the interface between water and model hydrocarbons(toluene and motor oil),lowering the interfacial tension and rigidifying the interface(as shown with a Langmuir trough).Bottle tests and optical microscopy showed that SDS and CPB produced W/O and O/W emulsions,with either toluene or motor oil and *** emulsification of motor oil and toluene in water with SDS and CPB facilitated their flow through sand columns and their *** recovery from sand columns was quantitated using Gas-Chromatography MassSpectroscopy(GC-MS).The data show that SDS and CPB can be used both for surfactant flushing and to trigger the gelation of’emulsion locks’.Ethanol also gelled the emulsions at100 mL/L.

Adult to adult living related liver transplantation: Where do we currently stand?

Adult to adult living donor liver transplantation (AALDLT) was first preformed in the United States in 1997. The procedure was rapidly integrated into clinical practice, but in 2002, possibly due to the first widely publicized donor death, the number of living liver donors plummeted. The number of donors has since reached a steady plateau far below its initial peak. In this review we evaluate the current climate of AALDLT. Specifically, we focus on several issues key to the success of AALDLT: determining the optimal indications for AALDLT, balancing graft size and donor safety, assuring adequate outflow, minimizing biliary complications, and maintaining ethical practices. We conclude by offering suggestions for the future of AALDLT in United States transplantation centers.

The design of urban squares in the city of Mendoza,Argentina,is based on aesthetic and landscaping criteria without consider strategies to enhance the benefits that green areas generate on the city's micrometeorological *** paper aims to evaluate different design alternatives with the purpose to determine which proportion and distribution of green and sealed areas contributes to achieve the best conditions in terms of thermal behavior and ***-met software was used to simulate thermal conditions over twenty three scenarios,and COMFA method was employed to determine comfort in the scenarios that show the best thermal behaviour and are representative of current design *** results show that the most effective scheme for the memorial squares rehabilitation is the one concentrating 60%of woodlot around a sealed center with an area that does not exceed 20%the square *** effective alternative is the one concentrating 60%of woodlot at the center of the *** findings highlight the importance of an adequate relation between proportion and distribution of woodlot/sealed areas to improve thermal performance and comfort conditions of open spaces.

Vibration-based damage detection methods have become widely used because of their advantages over traditional *** paper presents a new approach to identify the crack depth in steel beam structures based on vibration analysis using the Finite Element Method(FEM)and Artificial Neural Network(ANN)combined with Butterfly Optimization Algorithm(BOA).ANN is quite successful in such identification issues,but it has some limitations,such as reduction of error after system training is complete,which means the output does not provide optimal *** paper improves ANN training after introducing BOA as a hybrid model(BOA-ANN).Natural frequencies are used as input parameters and crack depth as *** data are collected from improved FEM using simulation tools(ABAQUS)based on different crack depths and locations as the first ***,data are collected from experimental analysis of cracked beams based on different crack depths and locations to test the reliability of the presented *** proposed approach,compared to other methods,can predict crack depth with improved accuracy.

To advance organ-on-a-chip development and other areas befitting from physiologically-relevant biomembranes,a microfluidic platform is presented for synthesis of biomembranes during gelation and investigation into their role as extracellular matrix *** this work,high-throughput studies of collagen,chitosan,and collagen-chitosan hybrid biomembranes were carried out to characterize and compare key properties as a function of the applied hydrodynamic conditions during ***,depending on the biopolymer material used,varying flow conditions during biomembrane gelation caused width,uniformity,and swelling ratio to be differently affected and ***,cell viability studies of seeded fibroblasts were conducted,thus showing the potential for biological applications.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the fifth most common malignancy and the second leading cause of cancerrelated *** C virus and mainly hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis is the chief risk factor for *** direct-acting antivirals are available for the eradication of hepatitis C virus with remarkable results in terms of virological response and with optimal safety ***,some authors have suggested that viral eradication due to these new drugs might favor both occurrence and recurrence of *** exact biological mechanisms of carcinogenesis in this specific setting have not been well identified,but it has been suggested that adjustments in immune surveillance and increase in vascular endothelial growth factor expression could have a chief ***,after publication of many large studies and meta-analyses,we can affirm that there is no increased risk on a population ***,on an individual basis,sustained virological response due to direct-acting antivirals may facilitate HCC onset in some specific subgroups of *** them,we could point out patients with activated neoangiogenesis but also subjects with particularly severe metabolic imbalance.

World lamb consumption is approximately 2 kg per capita with large variations between continents, e.g., 17 kg in Oceania vs. 0.7 kg in North America. With less than one million tonnes, the international trade of sheep meat contributes to a small percentage of the total meat exchanged between countries. On the other hand, lamb represents the highest rate of species trading in relation to the total sheep meat produced. It is therefore likely to ifnd a wide variability of different lamb products in the same market, and that the conservation procedures （such as refrigeration, packaging or freezing）, chemical composition, especially the fat due to its implication in human health, lfavour development and juiciness perception （affected, i.e., by the feeding or the age or slaughter weight of the animal） and acceptability （based on culinary background） could be considered important indicators of this advantageous situation. In this paper some studies related to the aforementioned indicators are discussed.
