Upper Cretaceous trench deposits of the Neo-Tethyan subduction zone： Jiachala Formation from Yarlung Zangbo suture zone in Tibet, China

The history of convergence between the India and the Asia plates, and of their subsequent collision which triggered the Himalayan orogeny is recorded in the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone. Exposed along the southern side of the suture, turbidites of the the Jiachala Formation fed largely from the Gangdese arc have long been considered as post-collisional foreland-basin deposits based on the reported occurrence of Paleocene-early Eocene dinoflagellate cysts and pollen assemblages. Because magmatic activity in the Gangdese arc continued through the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene, this scenario is incompatible with U-Pb ages of detrital zircons invariably older than the latest Cretaceous. To solve this conundrum, we carried out detailed stratigraphic, sedimentological, paleontological, and provenance analyses in the Gyangze and Sajia areas of southern Tibet,China. The Jiachala Formation consists of submarine fan deposits that lie in fault contact with the Zongzhuo *** petrography together with U-Pb ages and Hf isotope ratios of detrital zircons indicate provenance from the Gangdese arc and central Lhasa terrane. Well preserved pollen or dinoflagellate cysts microfossils were not found in spite of careful research, and the youngest age obtained from zircon grain was ～84 Ma. Based on sedimentary facies, provenance analysis and tectonic position, we suggest that the Jiachala Formation was deposited during the Late Cretaceous(~88–84 Ma) in the trench formed along the southern edge of Asia during subduction of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere.

Evaluation of disinfection byproducts for their ability to affect mitochondrial function

In the race to deliver clean water to communities through potable water reuse, disinfection and water quality assessment are and will continue to be fundamental factors. There are over 700 disinfection byproducts(DBPs) in water;evaluating each compound is practically impossible and very time consuming. A bioanalytical approach could be an answer to this challenge. In this work, the response of four major classes of DBPs toward mitochondrial membrane potential( Δψm) and cytoplasmic adenosine triphosphate(C-ATP) was investigated with human carcinoma(Hep G2) cells. Within 90 min of cell exposure, only the haloacetic acid(HAA) mixture caused a cytotoxic response as measured by C-ATP. All four groups(haloacetonitriles(HANs), trihalomethanes(THMs), nitrosamines(NOAs), and HAAs) responded well to Δψm, R 2 > 0.70. Based on the half-maximum concentration that evoked a 50% response in Δψm, the response gradient was HANs >> HAAs ~ THM > NOAs. The inhibition of the Δψm by HANs is driven by dibromoacetonitrile(DBAN), while dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN) did not cause a significant change in the Δψm at less than 2000 μM. A mixture of HANs exhibited an antagonistic behavior on the Δψm compared to individual compounds. If water samples are concentrated to increase HAN concentrations, especially DBAN, then Δψm could be used as a biomonitoring tool for DBP toxicity.

Micro computed tomography based finite element models for elastic and strength properties of 3D printed glass scaffolds

In this study,the mechanical properties of glass scaffolds manufactured by robocasting are investigated through micro computed tomography(/x-CT)based finite element *** scaffolds are obtained by printing fibers along two perpendicular directions on parallel layers with a 90°tilting between two adjacent layers.A parametric study is first presented with the purpose to assess the effect of the major design parameters on the elastic and strength properties of the scaffold;the mechanical properties of the 3D printed scaffolds are eventually estimated by using the\i-CT data with the aim of assessing the effect of defects on the final geometry which are intrinsic in the manufacturing *** macroscopic elastic modulus and strength of the scaffold are determined by simulating a uniaxial compressive test along the direction which is perpendicular to the layers of the printed *** iterative approach has been used in order to determine the scaffold strength.A partial validation of the computational model has been obtained through comparison of the computed results with experimental values presented in[10]on a ceramic scaffold having the same *** the results have been presented as non-dimensional *** finite element analyses have shown which of the selected design parameters have the major effect on the stiffness and strength,being the porosity and fiber shifting between adjacent layers the most important *** analyses carried out on the basis of the/x-C7 data have shown elastic modulus and strength which are consistent with that found on ideal geometry at similar macroscopic porosity.

Caspase-3 activation as a bifurcation point between plasticity and cell death

Death-mediating proteases such as caspases and caspase-3 in particular, have been implicated in neurodegenerative processes, aging and Alzheimer＇s disease. However, emerging evidence suggests that in addition to their classical role in cell death, caspases play a key role in modulating synaptic function. It is remarkable that active caspases-3, which can trigger widespread damage and degeneration, aggregates in structures as delicate as synapses and persists in neurons without causing acute cell death. Here, we evaluate this dichotomy, and discuss the hypothesis that caspase-3 may be a bifurcation point in cellular signaling, able to orient the neuronal response to stress down either pathological/apoptotic pathways or towards physiological cellular remodeling. We propose that temporal, spatial and other regulators of caspase activity are key determinants of the ultimate effect of caspase-3 activation in neurons. This concept has implications for differential roles of caspase-3 activation across the lifespan. Specifically, we propose that limited caspase-3 activation is critical for synaptic function in the healthy adult brain while chronic activation is involved in degenerative processes in the aging brain.

To “tell or not to tell”——Exploring disclosure about medicine use by people living with sleep disorders

Objective: To explore the difference in rates and reasons for disclosure of either conventional or complementary medicine(CM) to healthcare practitioners between people living with sleep disorders(SDs) and those without ***: A cross-sectional survey(N = 2019 adults) that measured sociodemographic characteristics,health status, health service utilisation, health literacy and health communication(medicine disclosure)of a representative sample of Australians was conducted. Data from participants reporting an SD(n = 265)were compared to those not reporting an SD to assess measures of health communication and disclosure about medicine ***: Overall, rates of medicine disclosure to both conventional and CM practitioners were high, in respondents with(70%) and without an SD(57%). Those reporting an SD had higher expectations of their conventional health practitioner’s knowledge of CM, associated clinical decision-making skills, and approval of CM use, and held a higher degree of concern about drug interactions(P < 0.05). The main reasons cited for disclosing CM use to conventional health practitioners and conventional medicine use to CM practitioners were “I want them to fully understand my health status” and“I was concerned about drug interactions with the CMs used.”Conclusion: The high rate of medicine use disclosure by people with SDs is driven by an intention to inform their healthcare practitioner about their health status and concerns about potential medicine interactions. Therefore, research about the expectations that people with an SD have of their conventional healthcare practitioners’ knowledge of CM and CM-drug interactions requires further ***, further examination of CM practitioner’s conventional medicine knowledge is encouraged.
