Longitudinal assessment of liver stiffness by transient elastography for chronic hepatitis C patients

BACKGROUND Liver fibrosis is a common pathway of liver injury and is a feature of most chronic liver *** progression varies markedly in patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV).Liver stiffness has been recommended as a parameter of fibrosis progression/regression in patients with *** To investigate changes in liver stiffness measured by transient elastography(TE)in a large,racially diverse cohort of United States patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS We evaluated the differences in liver stiffness between patients treated with direct-acting antiviral(DAA)therapy and untreated *** had≥2 TE measurements and no prior DAA *** used linear regression to measure the change in liver stiffness between first and last TE in response to treatment,controlling for age,sex,race,diabetes,smoking status,human immunodeficiency virus status,baseline alanine aminotransferase,and baseline liver *** regression models analyzed the change in liver stiffness as measured by kPa,stratified by cirrhosis *** Of 813 patients,419(52%)initiated DAA *** liver stiffness was 12 kPa in 127(16%).Median time between first and last TE was 11.7 and 12.7 mo among treated and untreated patients,*** was no significant change in liver stiffness observed over time in either the group initiating DAA treatment(0.016 kPa/month;CI:-0.051,0.084)or in the untreated group(0.001 kPa/mo;CI:-0.090,0.092),controlling for covariates.A higher baseline kPa score was independently associated with decreased liver *** DAA treatment was not associated with a differential change in liver stiffness over time in patients with CHC compared to untreated patients.

Mercury source zone identification using soil vapor sampling and analysis

Development and demonstration of reliable measurement techniques that can detect and help quantify the nature and extent of elemental mercury （Hg（0）） in the subsurface are needed to reduce uncertainties in the decision-making process and increase the effectiveness of remedial actions. We conducted field tests at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, to determine if sampling and analysis of Hg（0） vapors in the shallow subsurface （〈0.3 m depth） can be used to as an indicator of the location and extent of Hg（0） releases in the subsurface. We constructed a rigid polyvinyl chloride push probe assembly, which was driven into the ground. Soil gas samples were collected through a sealed inner tube of the assembly and were analyzed immediately in the field with a Lumex and/or Jerome Hg（0） analyzer. Time-series sampling showed that Hg vapor concentrations were fairly stable over time, suggesting that the vapor phase Hg（0） was not being depleted and that sampling results were not sensitive to the soil gas purge volume. Hg（0） vapor data collected at over 200 push probe locations at 3 different release sites correlated very well to areas of known Hg（0） contamination. Vertical profiling of Hg（0） vapor concentrations conducted at two locations provided information on the vertical distribution of Hg（0） contamination in the subsurface. We conclude from our studies that soil gas sampling and analysis can be conducted rapidly and inexpensively at large scales to help identify areas contaminated with Hg（0）.

Modern agriculture needs to develop transition pathways toward agroecological,resilient and sustainable farming *** key pathway for such agroecological intensification is the diversification of cropping systems using intercropping and notably cereal-grain legume *** mixtures or intercrops have the potential to increase and stabilize yields and improve cereal grain protein concentration in comparison to sole *** mixtures are complex and the 4C approach is both a pedagogical and scientific way to represent the combination of four joint effects of Competition,Complementarity,Cooperation,and Compensation as processes or effects occurring simultaneously and dynamically between species over the whole cropping *** is when plants have fairly similar requirements for abiotic resources in space and time,the result of all processes that occur when one species has a greater ability to use limiting resources(e.g.,nutrients,water,space,light)than *** is when plants grown together have different requirements for abiotic resources in space,time or *** is when the modification of the environment by one species is beneficial to the other(s).Compensation is when the failure of one species is compensated by the other(s)because they differ in their sensitivity to abiotic *** 4C approach allows to assess the performance of arable intercropping versus classical sole cropping through understanding the use of abiotic resources.

European cropping systems are often characterized by short rotations or even monocropping,leading to environmental issues such as soil degradation,water eutrophication,and air pollution including greenhouse gas emissions,that contribute to climate change and biodiversity *** use of diversification practices(i.e.,intercropping,multiple cropping including cover cropping and rotation extension),may help enhance agrobiodiversity and deliver ecosystem services while developing new value *** its benefits,crop diversification is hindered by various technical,organizational,and institutional barriers along value chains(input industries,farms,trading and processing industries,retailers,and consumers)and within sociotechnical systems(policy,research,education,regulation and advisory).Six EU-funded research projects have joined forces to boost crop diversification by creating the European Crop Diversification Cluster(CDC).This Cluster aggregates research,innovation,commercial and citizen-focused partnerships to identify and remove barriers across the agrifood system and thus enables the uptake of diversification measures by all European value-chain *** CDC will produce a typology of barriers,develop tools to accompany actors in their transition,harmonize the use of multicriteria assessment indicators,prepare policy recommendations and pave the way for a long-term network on crop diversification.

The EIP-Agri multiactor approach was exemplified during a 3-day workshop with 63 project participants from the EU H2020 funded project“Redesigning European cropping systems based on species MIXtures”.The objective was to share firsthand experience of participatory research among researchers who were mostly not familiar with this *** participants were divided into smaller multidisciplinary groups and given the opportunity to interact with representatives from eight actor positions in the value chain of the agrifood cooperative Terrena located in Western *** four stages of the workshop were:(1)key actor interviews,(2)sharing proposed solutions for overcoming barriers,and(3)developing possible interdisciplinary *** of frustration were recorded serving both as a motivation for group members to become more aware of the scientific concerns and practices of their colleagues,as well as a recognition that some researchers have better skills integrating qualitative approaches than ***,the workshop format was an effective way to gain a common understanding of the pertinent issues that need to be addressed to meet overall multiactorapproach *** with the actor networks was identified and emphasized as a means to overcome existing barriers between academia and practice in order to coproduce a shared vision of the benefits of species mixture benefits.
