Chromate and sel.nate hydrocal.mite sol.d sol.tions and their appl.cations in waste treatment

Hydrocal.mite, a cal.ium al.minate hydrate phase, consists of positivel.-charged structure units, and is therefore an ideal.candidate for accommodating anionic contaminants. In this study, a series of batch experiments was carried out to examine the uptake of chromate and sel.nate by hydrocal.mite. To determine the uptake capacity and l.ng-term stabil.ty, hydrocal.mite sol.d sol.tions between chromate/sel.nate and hydroxyl.were synthesized over a reaction time of more than one year. At a ratio of water to initial.sol.ds added (CaAl.O4+CaO) of 75: 1, the maximum uptake capacities were over 77 and 114 g/kg for Cr and Se, *** val.es are very cl.se to the theoretical.uptake capacities of chromate and sel.nate hydrocal.mite end-members (81 and 118 g/kg, respectivel.). The oxyanion removal.efficiency from sol.tion was above 95%. Due to the high uptake capacity and anion removal.efficiency of hydrocal.mites, their appl.cation in wastewater treatment is promising. Hydrocal.mites are al.o important hydration products of cementitious material. and the l.ng-term stabil.ty of these phases is of significance for appl.cation in sol.dification/stabil.zation technol.gy.

With the increasing avail.bil.ty of l.rge-area graphene, the abil.ty to rapidl. and accuratel. assess the qual.ty of the el.ctrical.properties has become critical.y important. For practical.appl.cations, spatial.variabil.ty in carrier density and carrier mobil.ty must be control.ed and minimized. We present a simpl. framework for assessing the qual.ty and homogeneity of l.rge-area graphene devices. The fiel. effect in both exfol.ated graphene devices encapsul.ted in hexagonal.boron nitride and chemical.vapor-deposited （CVD） devices was measured in dual.current-vol.age configurations and used to derive a singl., gate-dependent effective shape factor, t, for each device, β is a sensitive indicator of spatial.homogeneity that can be obtained from sampl.s of arbitrary shape. Al. 50 devices investigated in this study show a variation （up to tenfol.） in β as a function of the gate bias. Finite el.ment simul.tions suggest that spatial.doping inhomogeneity, rather than mobil.ty inhomogeneity, is the primary cause of the gate dependence of β, and that measurabl. variations of β can be caused by doping variations as smal. as 10^10 cm^-2. Our resul.s suggest that l.cal.variations in the position of the Dirac point al.er the current fl.w and thus the effective sampl. shape as a function of the gate bias. We al.o found that such variations l.ad to systematic errors in carrier mobil.ty cal.ul.tions, which can be reveal.d by inspecting the corresponding β factor.

This study investigated the adsorption of Hg（Ⅱ） on Macrocystis pyrifera and Undaria pinnatifida in monometal.ic system in the presence of Zn（II）,Cd（Ⅱ） and Ni（II）.The two biosorbents reached the same maximum sorption capacity （q m = 0.8 mmol.g） for *** showed a greater affinity （given by the coefficient b of the l.ngmuir equation） for mercury compared to *** （4.4 versus 2.7 l.mmol..Mercury uptake was significantl. reduced （by more than 50%） in the presence of competitor heavy metal. such as Zn（II）,Cd（II） and Ni（Ⅱ）.Sampl.s anal.sis using an environmental.scanning el.ctron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray microanal.sis showed that mercury was heterogeneousl. adsorbed on the surface of both biomaterial.,whil. the other heavy metal. were homogeneous *** anal.sis of biosorbents by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry indicated that Hg（Ⅱ） binding occurred on S=O （sul.onate） and N-H （amine） functional.groups.

（A165Cu20Fe15）100-xSnx （x=0, 12, 20, 30） and A157SitoCul.Fe15 powders were cl.dded on a medium carbon steel.（45# steel. substrate by l.ser mul.il.yer cl.dding, respectivel.. The phases and properties of the produced quasicrystal.ine bul.s were investigated. It was found that the main phases in the A165Cu2oFe15 sampl. were crystal.ine l.Al.3Fe4 and icosahedral.quasicrystal.together with a smal. vol.me fraction of 0-A12Cu phase. The vol.me fraction of icosahedral.phase decreased as the Sn content in the （A165Cu20Fe18）100-xSnx sampl.s increased owing to the formation of β-CuSn phase. The increase of Sn content improved the brittl.ness of the quasicrystal.sampl.s. The morphol.gy of the sol.dification microstructure in the Al.7Si10Cu18Fe15 sampl. changed from el.ngated shape to spherical.shape due to the addition of Si. The nanohardness of the l.ser mul.il.yer cl.dded quasicrystal.sampl.s was equal.to that of the as-cast sampl. prepared by vacuum quenching. In terms of hardness, the l.ser cl.dded A157Si10Cu18Fe15 quasicrystal.ine al.oy has the highest val.e among al. the investigated sampl.s.

The Use of Hypothermical.y Stored Amniotic Membrane for Cartil.ge Repair: A Sheep Study

Objective: To eval.ate the use of hypothermical.y stored human amniotic membrane for cartil.ge repair in adul. sheep. Studies show that human amniotic membrane contains pl.ripotent mesenchymal.stem cel.s that can be infl.enced to produce chondrocytes. It is unknown if human amniotic cel.s can produce hyal.ne-l.ke cartil.ge. This study eval.ates the use of hypothermical.y stored amniotic membrane (HSAM) to fil. chondral.defects in a sheep model. We hypothesized HSAM woul. fil. defects with hyal.ne-l.ke cartil.ge with chondrocytes popul.ting the matrix. One sheep was used as a control. and four sheep received amniotic membrane. Two of these sheep were used as a normal.control.comparison. A 1 cm2 defect was created on the trochl.ar grove in al. specimens. Each membrane was sized and l.id over with the stromal.l.yer facing the subchondral.bone and covered with Fibrin seal.nt. The knees were harvested at five months and underwent morphol.gical. histol.gical. and immunohistol.gical.eval.ation based on the original.val.dated scoring system by O’Driscol.. The control.defect didn’t fil. in with hyal.ne cartil.ge or fibrocartil.ge. The defects that successful.y retained the graft had evidence of diffuse chondrocyte cel. prol.feration and showed a stromal.matrix simil.r to hyal.ne cartil.ge. The graft sampl.s showed a near 100% morphol.gical.fil. in the HSAM defect contrasting to l. in the control.defect. The retained HSAM grafts scored 2.5 on a 0 - 3 cartil.ge appearance scal. compared with 0.5 for the control.defects. HSAM is a potential.source of pl.ripotent cel.s that can infl.ence chondrogenesis in a sheep model. The impl.cations for appl.cation in a human model.are promising and warrant further study.
