Analysis of daily activity data from implanted cardiac defibrillators: The minimum clinically important difference and relationship to mortality/life expectancy

Background: Daily activity is a potentially important measure for assessing prognosis in individuals with chronic heart failure (CHF), and few studies have investigated the prognostic value of daily activity measurement. The present study sought to determine whether there is an association between daily activity and mortality/mean life expectancy as predicted by the Seattle Heart Failure Model (SHFM), and to provide an estimate of the anchor-based minimum clinically important difference (MCID) for daily activity measured by single-axis accelerometers in implanted cardiac defibrillators. Methods: This study utilized a retrospective chart review of 102 medical records of patients with CHF and Medtronic? implanted cardiac defibrillators (ICDs). Mean daily activity was calculated for a two week period prior to both a baseline and follow-up routine clinical visit. Clinical characteristics from the baseline clinic visit were used for calculating SHFM estimates of mean life expectancy, 1-year mortality, and 5-year mortality. A five-point global rating scale was scored based on documented clinician impression, patient self-report, and laboratory and cardiographic tests for determining the MCID. Results: There was a moderate correlation between baseline daily activity and each of the SHFM prognostic indicators: 1-year mortality (r = 0.36, p < 0.001, 5-year mortality (r = 0.40, p < 0.001), and life expectancy (r = 0.43, p < 0.001). The MCID for a decline in daily activity was approximately 0.5 hours and was approximately 1.0 hours for improvement in daily activity. Conclusions: Although previous re- search has established the short-term predictive value of ICD-measured daily activity for CHF-related clinical events, no prior study has examined the longer-term prognostic value of ICD-based daily activity. The results of the present study suggest that low daily activity, as recorded by ICDs in patients with CHF, should prompt a more formal evaluation of prognosis using the SHFM

Nutritional stimulation of the developing small intestine of chick embryos can be conducted by in-ovo feeding(IOF).We hypothesized that IOF of glutamine and leucine can enhance small intestinal development by promoting proliferation and differentiation of multipotent small intestinal epithelial *** embryos(n=128)were subj.ct to IOF of glutamine(IOF-Gln),leucine(IOF-Leu),NaCl(IOF-NaCl)or no inj.ction(control)at embryonic d 17(E 17).Multipotent,progenitor and differentiated cells were located and quantified in the small intestinal epithelium between E 17 and d 7 after hatch(D 7)in all treatment groups by immunofluorescence of SRY-box transcription factor 9(Sox9)and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA),in-situ hybridization of leucine-rich repeat containing G-protein coupled receptor 5(Lgr5)and peptide transporter 1(PepT1)and histochemical goblet cell *** effects of IOF treatments at E 19(48 h post-IOF),in comparison to control embryos,were as follows:total cell counts increased by 40%,33%and 19%,and multipotent cell counts increased by 52%,50%and 38%,in IOF-Gln,IOF-Leu and IOF-NaCl embryos,*** IOF-Gln embryos exhibited a significance,36%increase in progenitor cell *** IOF treatments shifted Lgr5+ stem cell localizations to villus *** differentiated,PepT1+region of the villi was 1.9 and 1.3-fold longer in IOF-Gln and IOF-Leu embryos,respectively,while goblet cell densities decreased by 20%in IOF-Gln ***,crypt and villi epithelial cell counts were significantly higher IOF-Gln chicks,compared to control chicks(P<0.05).We conclude IOF of glutamine stimulates small intestinal maturation and functionality during the peri-hatch period by promoting multipotent cell proliferation and differentiation,resulting in enhanced compartmentalization of multipotent and differentiated cell niches and expansions of the absorptive surface area.

Regeneration Responses in Partially-Harvested Riparian Management Zones in Northern Minnesota

Trees serve important functions in riparian areas. Guidelines often suggest how riparian forests should be managed to sustain functions, including tree retention and increasing the component of conifers and later-successional species. While regeneration of early successional species is not discouraged, there is uncertainty about the ability to regenerate the latter along with more desirable species. We investigated the regeneration of species differing in successional status and growth forms under different amounts of residual basal area. The study was conducted in riparian sites in northern Minnesota USA. At each site, one portion of the riparian area was uncut, while a downstream area was harvested to 16 or 8 m2·ha-1. Woody vegetation was sampled before and five-years after harvesting and summarized as early, mid-, and late successional hardwoods, as well as conifers and shrubs. After five years, the density of early successional trees was lower at 16 m2·ha-1 compared to 8 m2·ha-1;densities in both treatments were lower than in clearcuts. Densities of mid- and late successional hardwoods and conifers did not increase in either treatment. The higher basal area treatment resulted in a lower density of shrubs, which might be important for establishing more desirable tree species, although this may require additional activities to promote establishment.

In this study, we report the fabrication of engineered iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs)functionalized with anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2) antibody totarget the tumor antigen HER2. The Fc-directed conj.gation of antibodies to the MNPs aidstheir efficient immunospecific targeting through free Fab portions. The directional specificity ofconj.gation was verified on a macrophage cell line. Immunofluorescence studies on macrophagestreated with functionalized MNPs and free anti-HER2 antibody revealed that the antibodymolecules bind to the MNPs predominantly through their Fc portion. Different cell lines with different HER2 expression levels were used to test the specificity of our functionalized nanoprobe formolecular targeting applications. The results of cell line targeting demonstrate that these engineered MNPs are able to differentiate between cell lines with different levels of HER2 expression.

The Case for Integrative Sustainable Development Practice Based on the Minas Conga Gold-Mining Experience in Peru

Mining proj.cts are among the most impactful development proj.cts, and the most controversial. The Conga Mining Proj.ct, proposed by the U.S. based Newmont Mining Corporation, in partnership with Minas Buenaventura, was slated for the Caj.marca region of Peru. Since the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was completed in 2010, controversy has escalated: public protests have precipitated a political crisis for President Humala, with several ministers resigning. The proposed proj.ct would have been made located approximately 73 km northeast of the city of Caj.marca, in the northern Peruvian Andes, in the district of Sorochuco, within an area defined by four maj.r lakes, headwaters of rivers, and wetlands. Despite findings of “no significant impact” by the 2010 EIA, the proj.ct is currently postponed indefinitely due to the public backlash, international attention, and questions of integrity surrounding environmental and social concerns. We use the Conga Mining case to interrogate business-as-usual (BAU) design, assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring practices for extractive development in Peru, and suggest alternatives. Our analysis is based on an integrative framework that is empirically based (previously developed by the authors), one with a greater likelihood of improving sustainable development and the equity of positive and negative impacts among stakeholders. Suggestions are tailored to the setting: we pay special attention to the climate-change and socio-political contexts of Peru. We seek to exploit a shifting political landscape that is resisting BAU and countering the systematic disenfranchisement of vulnerable populations by extractive resource industries. These appear to be enabling conditions to promote the adoption of a capacity building, socio-technical enterprise approach to framing and designing sustainable development proj.cts in Peru, with implications beyond.

Flowering, fruit set, embryological development, and pollination trials were Investigated In Santslum album L. Each ovary may have three to four ovules. Mlcrosporogenesls and megasporogenesls In the same flower were synchronized at the earlier stages of flower development. However, at anthesls, when pollen was mature, the magaspore had developed only to the stage of a one- to two-nucleus embryo sac. As the eight-nucleus embryo sac developed, some mamelon cells began to undergo programmed cell death, forming holes Into which the eight-nucleus embryo sacs extended, becoming ＂N＂ or ＂S＂ shaped. The development from a two-nucleus embryo sac to a matured eight-nucleus embryo sac lasted up to 10 d. Fruit-set from open pollination was less than 2%. The endosperm develops prior to division of the zygotic embryo and one to three embryos and endosperms were formed In the same fruit. A mature seed usually germinates to produce one seedling; however, two and three seedlings from one seed were also observed, albeit at a low frequency. Pollination trials showed that no seed sets when Inflorescences were covered with s bag; however, artificial pollination could Improve fruit set. Our pollinaUon trials and embryological studies proved that the flower of S. album Is dlchogamous and fruit set has high heterozygosity.

Detection and assessment of nitrogen effect on cold tolerance for tea by hyperspectral reflectance with PLSR, PCR, and LM models

Knowledge of nutrients effect on freezing tolerance is vital for protecting tea plants against cold inj.ry(CI).Freezing inj.ry treatments on tea leaves with different low temperature and nitrogen(N)concentration was evaluated by hyperspectral imaging based on the reflectance as potential analytical ***,quantitative evaluation of the CI was improved by comparing analyzed results using partial least squares regression(PLSR),principle component regression(PCR)and linear model(LM)*** of the CI was obtained by hyperspectral imaging system in the band between 871 and 1766 *** results showed that average reflectance increases with the rise of N concentration.A substantial portion of the leaf from the plant with 100%N dosage had the darkest image and resulted in the highest reflectance because the N weakened the negative effect of freezing *** of the five spectral domains tested,the best predictive accuracy for the CI of the tea leaf was achieved by PCR(R^(2)=0.9971,RMSE=0.0609)in 1410–1766 nm wavelength,followed by LM(R^(2)=0.9999,RMSE=0.0805)in 871–1000 *** whole interval had the worse prediction accuracy which could be caused by large variations in the data for a specific treatment and high absorption peak occurring around 1450 nm in the reflectance *** averages,R^(2) and RMSE for all the three statistical models showed that the worse prediction accuracy occurred in 1410–1766 nm,followed by the whole interval 871–1766 *** prediction accuracy was low which could be due to the strong water absorption peaks that appeared in both range of *** models without absorption bands had improved correlation coefficient and reduced RMSE values between the measured and the predicted CI(R^(2)=0.9676;RMSE=0.3067)compared to the model developed with the reflectance values in the entire waveband(R^(2)=0.9504;RMSE=0.6629).The reflectance values where absorption bands occurred had detrimental effect on the model performance,which
