Casticin from Vitex species: a short review on its anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties

This short review provides an update of the anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties of casticin from Vitex species. Casticin is a polymethylflavone with three rings, an orthocatechol moiety, a double bond,two hydroxyl groups and four methoxyl groups. Casticin has been isolated from various tissues of plants in the Vitex genus： fruits and leaves of V. trifolia, aerial parts and seeds of V. agnus-castus and leaves of ***. Studies have reported the antiproliferative and apoptotic activities of casticin from Vitex *** compound is effective against many cancer cell lines via different molecular mechanisms. Studies have also affirmed the anti-inflammatory properties of casticin, with several molecular mechanisms identified. Other pharmacological properties include anti-asthmatic, tracheospasmolytic, analgesic, antihyperprolactinemia, immunomodulatory, opioidergic, oestrogenic, anti-angiogenic, antiglioma, lung inj.ry protection, rheumatoid arthritis amelioration and liver fibrosis attenuation activities. Clinical trials and commercial use of the casticin-rich fruit extract of V. agnus-castus among women with premenstrual syndrome were briefly discussed.

Transcriptome Analysis of Drought Induced Stress in <i>Chenopodium quinoa</i>

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a halophytic, allotetraploid grain crop of the Amaranthaceae family with impressive drought tolerance, nutritional content and an increasing worldwide market. Here we report the results of an RNA-seq transcriptome analysis of Chenopodium quinoa using four water treatments (field capacity to drought) on the varieties “Ingapirca” (representing valley ecotypes) and “Ollague” (representing Altiplano Salares ecotypes). Physiological results, including growth rate, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and stem water potential, support the earlier findings that the Altiplano Salares ecotypes display greater tolerance to drought-like stress conditions than the valley ecotypes. cDNA libraries from root tissue samples for each variety × treatment combination were sequenced using Illumina Hi-Seq technology in an RNA-seq experiment. De novo assembly of the transcriptome generated 20,337 unique transcripts. Gene expression analysis of the RNA-seq data identified 462 putative gene products that showed differential expression based on treatment, and 27 putative gene products differentially expressed based on variety × treatment, including significant expression differences in root tissue in response to increasing water stress. BLAST searches and gene ontology analysis show an overlap between drought tolerance stress and other abiotic stress mechanisms.

AIM: To develop a framework for the clinical and health economic assessment for management of Clostridium difficile infection(CDI).METHODS: CDI has vast economic consequences emphasizing the need for innovative and cost effective solutions, which were aim of this study. A guidance model was developed for coverage decisions and guideline development in CDI. The model included pharmacotherapy with oral metronidazole or oral vancomycin, which is the mainstay for pharmacological treatment of CDI and is recommended by most treatment ***: A design for a patient-based cost-effectiveness model was developed, which can be used to estimate the cost-effectiveness of current and future treatment strategies in CDI. Patient-based outcomes were extrapolated to the population by including factors like, e.g., person-to-person transmission, isolation precautions and closing and cleaning wards of hospitals. CONCLUSION: The proposed framework for a population-based CDI model may be used for clinical and health economic assessments of CDI guidelines and coverage decisions for emerging treatments for CDI.

Gregarious pupation act as a defensive mechanism against cannibalism and intraguild predation

Coccinellid pupae use an array of defensive strategies against their natural enemies. This study aims to assess the efficiency of gregarious pupation as a defensive mechanism against intraguild predators and cannibals in coccinellid. The study was designed specifically （i） to determine the natural occurrence of gregarious pupation in the field for different coccinellid species, and （ii） to evaluate the adaptive value of gregarious pupation as a defensive mechanism against 2 types of predators （i.e., cannibals and intraguild predators）. In the field, gregarious pupation consisted of a group of 2-5 pupae. The proportion of gregarious pupation observed varied according to species, the highest rate being observed with Harmonia axyridis Pallas （Coccinellidae; 14.17%）. Gregarious pupation had no impact on the probability that intraguild predators and cannibals locate pupae. Intraguild predation occurred more often in site with gregarious pupation, while cannibalism occurred as often in site with gregarious pupation as in site with isolated pupa. However, for a specific pupa, the mortality rate was higher for isolated pupae than for pupae located in a gregarious pupation site both in the presence of intraguild predators and in the presence of cannibals. The spatial location of pupae within the group had no impact on mortality rate. Since it reduces the risk of predation, it is proposed that gregarious pupation act as a defensive mechanism for 11. axyridis pupae.

This article is devoted to the thermophysical and mechanical study of an eco-material, poto-poto. The obj.ctive is to study the influence of the addition of bamboo fibers on the thermophysical properties of the material, while verifying that it complies with the mechanical standards in Cameroon. A double study is therefore carried out: a mechanical characterization whose obj.ctive is to determine the mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength and Young’s modulus) and a thermophysical characterization whose obj.ctive is to determine the thermal conductivity. For the thermophysical characterization, the asymmetric hot plane experimental setup based on 1D quadrupole modelling was developed and simulated for the estimation of thermal effusivity E and volume heat capacity ρCp. The obtained experimental results show that the apparent thermal conductivity of the developed materials decreases with increasing fibers. Although the reference material (0% fibers) has a much higher conductivity than the ordinary sand block (1.15 Wm-1 K-1), the addition of fibers, already at 2%, contributes to decrease this conductivity (0.95 Wm-1 K-1). From the point of view of thermal insulation and energy savings, the thermal conductivity results obtained show that the use of these materials with a maximum fibercontent of 6% would be a better thermal insulator than sand block or compressed earth brick. The compressive strength obtained is such that Rc > 0.6 MPa. All the materials developed meet the design standards when used as infill.

The Hypoxylaceae(Xylariales,Ascomycota)is a diverse family of mainly saprotrophic fungi,which commonly occur in angiosperm-dominated forests around the *** their importance in forest and plant ecology as well as a prolific source of secondary metabolites and enzymes,genome sequences of related taxa are scarce and usually derived from envi-ronmental *** address this lack of knowledge thirteen taxonomically well-defined representatives of the family and one member of the closely related Xylariaceae were genome sequenced using combinations of Illumina and Oxford nanopore technologies or PacBio *** workflow leads to high quality draft genome sequences with an average N50 of 3.0 Mbp.A backbone phylogenomic tree was calculated based on the amino acid sequences of 4912 core genes reflecting the current accepted taxonomic concept of the Hypoxylaceae.A Percentage of Conserved Proteins(POCP)analysis revealed that 70%of the proteins are conserved within the family,a value with potential application for the definition of family boundaries within the order ***,Hypomontagnella spongiphila is proposed as a new marine derived lineage of *** based on in-depth genomic comparison and morphological differences of the *** results showed that both species share 95%of their genes corresponding to more than 700 strain-specific *** difference is not reflected by standard taxonomic assessments(morphology of sexual and asexual morph,chemotaxonomy,phylogeny),preventing species delimitation based on traditional *** changes are likely to be the result of environmental adaptations and selective pressure,the driving force of *** data provide an important starting point for the establishment of a stable phylogeny of the Xylariales;they enable studies on evolution,ecological behavior and biosynthesis of natural products;and they significantly advance the taxonomy of fungi.

The rapid advancement of electronic devices and fabrication technologies has further promoted the field of wearables and smart ***,most of the current efforts in textile electronics focus on a single modality and cover a small ***,we have developed a tailored,electronic textile conformable suit(E-TeCS)to perform large-scale,multimodal physiological(temperature,heart rate,and respiration)sensing in *** platform can be customized for various forms,sizes and functions using standard,accessible and high-throughput textile manufacturing and garment patterning *** to a compression shirt,the soft and stretchable nature of the tailored E-TeCS allows intimate contact between electronics and the skin with a pressure value of around~25 mmHg,allowing for physical comfort and improved precision of sensor readings on *** E-TeCS can detect skin temperature with an accuracy of 0.1℃ and a precision of 0.01℃,as well as heart rate and respiration with a precision of 0.0012 m/s^(2) through mechano-acoustic inertial *** knit textile electronics can be stretched up to 30%under 1000 cycles of stretching without significant degradation in mechanical and electrical *** and theoretical investigations are conducted for each sensor modality along with performing the robustness of sensor-interconnects,washability,and breathability of the *** results suggest that our E-TeCS can simultaneously and wirelessly monitor 30 skin temperature nodes across the human body over an area of 1500 cm2,during seismocardiac events and respiration,as well as physical activity through inertial dynamics.
