Unlike European species,the potential of Nearctic syrphids as biological control agents is still poorly ***,the American hoverfly,Eupeodes americanus(Wiedemann),has recently demonstrated promising traits as a biocontrol agent,notably against the foxglove aphid,Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach,on *** present study aims to extend our knowledge of the American hoverfly by evaluating its potential as a biocontrol agent in a banker plant system against the melon aphid,Aphis gossypi Glover,in a greenhouse cucumber *** preimaginal development and voracity of *** were compared when preying upon the focal prey/pest(***)or the banker prey(bird cherry-oat aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi L.)by daily observations of larvae from egg to *** development time,survival rate,and occurrence of deformation were similar on both prey *** weight of third instar and pupae,however,was higher for larvae that fed on the banker *** ad libitum voracity of the syrphid larvae was generally very high and did not significantly differ between prey species,except for the third-instar larvae which consumed more focal *** suggest that a banker plant system involving the bird cherry-oat aphid may be a promising tactic for utilizing *** for melon aphid biocontrol.

BACKGROUNd Aprotinin has recently been associated with adverse outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac *** reviewed our experience with this agent in patients undergoing cardiac surgery at duke University Medical Center. METHOdS We retrieved data on 10,275 consecutive patients undergoing surgical coronary revascularization at duke between January 1,1996,and december 31,*** fit data to a logistic-regression model predicting each patient’s likelihood of receiving aprotinin on the basis of preoperative characteristics and to models predicting long-term survival(up to 10 years) and decline in renal function,as measured by increases in serum creatinine levels. RESULTS A total of 1343 patients(13.2%) received aprotinin,6776 patients(66.8%) received aminocaproic acid,and 2029 patients(20.0%) received no antifibrinolytic therapy. All patients underwent coronary-artery bypass grafting,and 1181 patients(11.5%) underwent combined coronary-artery bypass grafting and valve *** the risk-adjusted model,survival was worse among patients treated with aprotinin,with a main-effects hazard ratio for death of 1.32(95%confidence interval[CI],1.12 to 1.55) for the comparison with patients receiving no antifibrinolytic therapy(P=0.003) and 1.27(95%CI,1.10 to 1.46) for the comparison with patients receiving aminocaproic acid(P=0.004).As compared with the use of aminocaproic acid or no antifibrinolytic agent,aprotinin use was also associated with a larger risk-adjusted increase in the serum creatinine level(Pdjusted incidence of dialysis(P=0.56). CONCLUSIONS Patients who received aprotinin had a higher mortality rate and larger increases in serum creatinine levels than those who received aminocaproic acid or no antifibrinolytic agent.

This study assesses the capability of a coarse-resolution ocean model to replicate the response of the Southern Ocean Meridional Overturning Circulation(MOC) to intensified westerlies,focusing on the role of the eddy transfer coefficient(κ).κ is a parameter commonly used to represent the velocities induced by unresolved *** findings reveal that a stratification-dependent κ,incorporating spatiotemporal variability,leads to the most robust eddy-induced MOC response,capturing 82% of the reference eddy-resolving *** the eddy-induced velocity into its vertical variation(VV) and spatial structure(SS) components unveils that the enhanced eddy compensation response primarily stems from an augmented SS term,while the introduced VV term weakens the ***,the temporal variability of the stratification-dependent κ emerges as a key factor in enhancing the eddy compensation response to intensified *** experiment with stratification-dependent κ exhibits a more potent eddy compensation response compared to the constant κ,attributed to the structure of κ and the vertical variation of the density *** results underscore the critical role of accurately representing κ in capturing the response of the Southern Ocean MOC and emphasize the significance of the isopycnal slope in modulating the eddy compensation mechanism.

BACKGROUNd Smartwatches have become readily accessible tools for detecting atrial fibrillation(AF).There remains limited data on how they affect psychosocial outcomes and engagement in older *** examine the health behavior outcomes of stroke survivors prescribed smartwatches for AF detection stratified by *** We analyzed data from the Pulsewatch study,a randomized controlled trial that enrolled patients(≥50 years)with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack and CHA2dS2-VASc≥*** participants were equipped with a cardiac patch monitor and a smartwatch-app dyad,while control participants wore the cardiac patch monitor for up to 44 *** evaluated health behavior parameters using standardized tools,including the Consumer Health Activation Index,the Generalized Anxiety disorder questionnaire,the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey,and wear time of participants categorized into three age groups:Group 1(ages 50-60),Group 2(ages 61-69),and Group 3(ages 70-87).We performed statistical analysis using a mixedeffects repeated measures linear regression model to examine differences amongst age *** Comparative analysis between Groups 1,2 and 3 revealed no significant differences in anxiety,patient activation,perception of physical health and wear *** use of smartwatch technology was associated with a decrease in perception of mental health for Group 2 compared to Group 1(β=-3.29,P=0.046).CONCLUSION Stroke survivors demonstrated a willingness to use smartwatches for AF ***,among these study participants,the majority did not experience negative health behavior outcomes or decreased engagement as age increased.

BACKGROUNd Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis(PCI),characterized by a collection of gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall,is an uncommon but well-known condition in *** pain is the most frequent symptom associated with *** represents a potential cause of recurrent abdominal pain or emergency ***,the occurrence of colonic intussusception secondary to PCI is very unusual in *** SUMMARY A 52-year-old male,known with idiopathic PCI,presented seventeen months after initial diagnosis with a new right upper quadrant pain.A computed tomographyscan demonstrated a colonic intussusception at the hepatic *** did not progress compared with initial *** patient underwent an emergency right *** Resection was recommended in this case because PCI proved to be persisting with no identified curable *** allowed to address the underlying pathology,the potential relapse of intussusception,and the likely cause of recurrent abdominal pain,either invagination or PCI itself.
