Coverage and Information Treatment of Zika in Ecuador:Analysis of News From National Newspapers El Universo and El Telégrafo

Zika is an infectious disease that emerged as an epidemic in Latin America in 2015 and arrived in Ecuador at the start of *** research analyzes the coverage that two national Ecuadorian newspapers gave to this sanitary *** El Telégrafo and El Universo,the first one of government domain and the other one of a private company,were chosen to be studied,and interviews with journalists who reported before,during and after the epidemic,were *** results showed that:In most news articles,a single source is handled,preferably the official or institutional one;that the majority of articles were about the international situation rather than local or national information;that alarm content is privileged over the preventive;and finally that the earthquake that hit the Ecuadorian coast in April 2016 weakened the coverage of Zika,even though the epidemic was at its outbreak at the time in the *** is a need for journalists to be trained to cover these types of emergencies in order to better inform the people and follow up diseases cycles in order to arrange their own news agenda and work more on solution approaches.

Evaluation of Ear and Facial Indices of Ibibio and Efik Female Children of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, Nigeria

Background: The ear and face are indispensable and distinctive features for hearing and identification. Objectives: This study was designed to generate anthropometric data of the ear and facial indices of females of Efik and Ibibio children in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, show morphological and aesthetic differences and ethnicity. Methods: A total of 600 female children (300 Efiks and 300 Ibibios) aged 2 to 10 years that met the inclusion criteria were chosen from selected primary schools in Calabar Municipality, Calabar South of Cross River State and from Uyo, Itu of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Standardized measurements of face length, face width, ear length, and ear width were taken with a spreading caliper;the facial (proscopic) and ear (auricular) indices were determined. Results: Efik subjects presented a mean face length of 8.36 ± 0.06 cm, face width of 11.04 ± 0.04 cm, ear length of 4.92 ± 0.02 cm, and ear width of 3.06 ± 0.01 cm. Ibibio subjects had mean values for face length, face width, ear length, and ear width as 8.17 ± 0.05 cm, 10.75 ± 0.05 cm, 4.77 ± 0.03 cm, and 2.94 ± 0.02 cm respectively. The mean facial index and ear index for Efik subjects were 75.68 ± 0.31 and 62.16 ± 0.27 respectively;while the mean facial and ear indices for Ibibio subjects were 74.79 ± 0.36 and 61.80 ± 0.34 respectively. Statistical analysis demonstrated significant differences in face length, ear length, ear width and facial index, with the Efik subjects having higher values than Ibibio subjects (p Conclusion: The results showed hypereuryproscopic face as the prevalent face type among females of both ethnic groups, therefore can be of importance in sex, ethnic, and racial differentiation, and in clinical practice, aesthetics and forensic medicine.

Understanding the impact of sustainable land-scape management practices on farm productivity under intensifying tropical cyclones: Evidence from Southern Malawi

Southern Malawi is continuously affected by tropical cyclone-related floods(TCRFs),which have negative consequences on households'livelihoods,thereby displacing most households to neighbouring communities of *** TCRFs have further threatened national,regional,community,and household food security agenda,which is already constrained by poverty,poor agricultural practices,low use of improved varieties,unaffordable inorganic fertilizers,and fragmenting landholding ***,households have indigenously engineered resilience-based Sustainable Landscape Management(SLM)practices,like intercropping,agroforestry,cover cropping,and soil and water conservation practices,against the adverse effects of TCRFs on-farm ***,this study examines the effect of TCRFs and SLM adoption on-farm *** using rigorous endogenous switching regression econometric tools,the study finds TCRFs reducing farm productivity by 27 *** SLM adoption,the study observes farm productivity enhancement by 29-126 percent when households adopt at least one SLM practices under varying degrees of *** the highlighted advantages of SLM adoption,female farmers are less likely to adopt SLM practices because they do not have access to productive ***,the study proposes the need of gender targeted extension services,accompanied by some seed capital for SLM ***,there is need to sensitize farmers on the complementarities between inorganic fertilizer and SLM ***,future studies should assess the effect of sustained SLM adoption or dis-adoption and input intensification on farm productivity.
