A recent study published in Science by Krypotou et *** the role of an intrinsically disordered region(IDR)in the transcription termination Rho protein from Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron:in response to starvation Rho phase separated,which triggered an increase in Rho activity and expression changes.1 These results demonstrate that a highly conserved protein can acquire new regulatory properties in evolution by gaining an IDR that leads to protein phase separation.

Robotic system has been increasingly used in pancreatectomy. However, the effectiveness of this method remains uncertain. This study compared the surgical outcomes between robot-assisted laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy and conventional laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. During a 15-year period, 35 patients underwent minimally invasive approach of distal pancreatectomy in our center. Seventeen of these patients had robot-assisted laparoscopic approach, and the remaining 18 had conventional laparoscopic approach. Their operative parameters and perioperative outcomes were analyzed retrospectively in a prospective database. The mean operating time in the robotic group （221.4 min） was significantly longer than that in the laparoscopic group （173.6 min）（p = 0.026）. Both robotic and conventional laparoscopic groups presented no significant difference in spleen-preservation rate （52.9% vs. 38.9%）（p = 0.505）, operative blood loss （100.3 ml vs. 268.3 ml）（p = 0.29）, overall morbidity rate （47.1% vs. 38.9%）（p = 0.73）, and post-operative hospital stay （11.4 days vs. 14.2 days）（p = 0.46）. Both groups also showed no perioperative mortality. Similar outcomes were observed in robotic distal pancreatectomy and conventional laparoscopic approach. However, robotic approach tended to have the advantages of less blood loss and shorter hospital stay. Further studies are necessary to determine the clinical position of robotic distal pancreatectomy.

In 1994, University of Southern California computer scientist, Dr. Leonard Adleman solved the Hamiltonian path problem using DNA as a computational mechanism. He proved the principle that DNA computing could be used to solve computationally complex problems. Because of the limitations in discovery time, resource requirements, and sequence mismatches, DNA computing has not yet become a commonly accepted practice. However, advancements are continually being discovered that are evolving the eld of DNA computing. practical applications of DNA are not restricted to computation alone. This research presents a novel approach in which DNA could be used as a means of storing les. Through the use of multiple sequence alignment combined with intelligent heu- ristics, the most probabilistic le contents can be determined with minimal errors.

Through two methods, we investigate the solitary and periodic wave solutions of the differential equation describing a nonlinear coupled two-dimensional discrete electrical lattice. The fixed points of our model equation are examined and the bifurcations of phase portraits of this equation for various values of the front wave velocity are presented. Using the sineGordon expansion method and classic integration, we obtain exact transverse solutions including breathers, bright solitons,and periodic solutions.

Monoterpenes, source of the distinctive odor of conifers, are generally considered plant defensive compounds. However, they are also known to act as long-range insect attractants, as they are volatile and permeate forest airspaces. Moreover, they are lipid soluble and can be absorbed into plant epicuticular waxes. We test their role in short-range host plant choice by both adult females and larvae of a folivorous forest pest （Choristoneura fumiferana）. We conducted laboratory assays testing the responses of Eastern spruce budworm to an artificial monoterpene mix （α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, myrcene） and to white spruce （picea glauca） epicuticular waxes in closed arenas. Ovipositing females pre- ferred filter paper discs treated with p. glauca waxes to controls, and preferred the waxes ＋ monoterpenes treatment to waxes alone. However, females showed no preference between the monoterpene-treated disc and the control when presented without waxes. Feeding larvae prefered wax discs to control discs. They also consumed discs treated with realistic monoterpene concentrations and wax preferentially over wax-only discs, but showed no preference between extremely high monoterpene concentrations and wax-only controls. In an insect-free assay, p. glauca epicuticular wax decreased monoterpene volatilization. These results suggest that p. glauca waxes and realistic concentrations of monoterpenes are stimulatory to both egg-laying females and feeding larvae, and that their effects are synergistic.

Giant duodenal ulcers （GDUs） are a subset of duodenal ulcers that have historically resulted in greater morbidity than usual duodenal ulcers. Until recently, few cases had been successfully treated with medical therapy. However, the widespread use of endoscopy, the introduction of H-2 receptor blockers and proton p^Jmp inhibitors, and the improvement in surgical techniques all have revolutionized the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of this condition. Nevertheless, GDUs are still associated with high rates of morbidity, mortality and complications. Thus, surgical evaluation of a patient with a GDU should remain an integral part of patient care. These giant variants, while usually benign, can frequently harbor malignancy. A careful review of the literature highlights the important differences when comparing GDUs to classical peptic ulcers and why they must be thought of differently than their more common counterpart.

In this work, we further extended the face-based smoothed finite element method （FS-FEM） for modal analysis of three-dimensional solids using four-node tetrahedron elements. The FS-FEM is formulated based on the smoothed Calerkin weak form which employs smoothed strains obtained using the gradient smoothing operation on face-based smoothing domains. This strain smoothing operation can provide softening effect to the system stiffness and make the FSFEM provide more accurate eigenfrequency prediction than the FEM does. Numerical studies have verified this attractive property of FS-FEM as well as its ability and effectiveness on providing reliable eigenfrequency and eigenmode prediction in practical engineering application.

Background:Infants undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass(CpB)frequently receive intraoperative methylprednisolone(Mp)to suppress CpB-related inflammation;however,the optimal dosing strategy and efficacy of Mp remain ***:We retrospectively analyzed all infants under 90 days-old who received intra-operative Mp for cardiac surgery with CpB from 2014–2017 at our *** combined real-world dosing data from the electronic health record(EHR)and two previously developed population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models to simulate peak concentration(Cmax)and area under the concentration-time curve for 24 h(AUC24)for Mp and the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6(IL-6)and interleukin-10(IL-10).We evaluated the relationships between post-operative,safety,and other clinical outcomes obtained from the EHR with each predicted exposure using non-parametric ***:A total of 142 infants with median post-natal age 8(interquartile range[IQR]:5,37)days received a total dose of 30(19,49)mg/kg of ***(8%)died,37(26%)met the composite post-operative outcome,114(80%)met the composite safety outcome,and 23(16%)had a major *** median Cmax and AUC24 IL-6 exposure was significantly higher for infants meeting the composite post-operative outcome and those with major *** median Cmax and AUC24 Mp exposure was significantly higher for infants requiring *** exposure was associated with death or other safety ***:pro-inflammatory IL-6,but not Mp exposure,was associated with post-operative organ dysfunction,suggesting current Mp dosing may not adequately suppress IL-6 or increase IL-10 to impact clinical *** study will be required to define the optimal exposure-efficacy and exposure-safety profiles in these infants.

The reliability optimization process in earthquake engineering requires that the expected present value of the total cost is minimized, including the initial cost as well as the damage costs caused by earthquakes, which include indirect costs. One of these costs is concerned with how much society is willing to invest for preserving human life. Ethical principles, on which to base the assessment of this cost, are presented and discussed in this work. Individual and social values are analyzed. Finally, an optimal seismic design coefficient with the results obtained is calculated for a site with low seismicity.
