Turbulent flows over real heterogeneous urban surfaces:Wind tunnel experiments and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations

Wind tunnel experiment and steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)approaches are used to examine the urban boundary layer(UBL)development above Kowloon Peninsula,hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR).The detailed urban morphology is resolved by computational fluid dynamics(CFD)and is fabricated by 3D-printing(reduced scale)for wind tunnel *** from the majority existing results based on idealized,homogeneous urban geometries,it was found that the wind and turbulence in the UBL over downtown Kowloon are characterized by the wake behind several high-rise *** particular,local maxima of turbulence kinetic energy(TKE)and shear stress are found at the roof level of those high-rise *** the downstream region where the flows are already adjusted to the urban surfaces,the urban roughness sublayer(URSL)can be further divided into two layers based on the structures of the mixing length/m,effective drag Dx and dispersive *** the lower URSL(zm),lm is rather uniform,and the Reynolds stress and dispersive stress are *** the upper URSL(100 m z s 300 m),on the contrary,lm is peaked at the mid-height and the magnitude of dispersive stress is smaller than that of the Reynolds stress(<30%).The effective drag Dx is negligible in the upper URSL.

Preparation and growth mechanism of nickel nanowires under applied magnetic field

Nickel nanowires with large aspect ratio of up to 300 have been prepared by a hydrazine hydrate reduction method under applied magnetic field. The diameter of nickel nanowires is about 200 nm and length up to 60 μm. The role of magnetic field on the growth of magnetic nanowires is discussed and a magnetic nanowire growth mechanism has been proposed. Nickel ions are firstly reduced to nickel atoms by hydrazine hydrates in a strong alkaline solution and grow into tiny spherical nanoparticles. Then, these magnetic particles will align under a magnetic force and form linear chains. Furthermore, the as-formed chains can enhance the local magnetic field and attract other magnetic particles nearby, resulting finally as linear nanowires. The formation and the size of nanowires depend strongly on the magnitude of applied magnetic field.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of the wind flow over an airport terminal building

Turbulence in the wake generated by wind flow over buildings or obstacles may produce complex flow patterns in downstream *** include the recirculating flow and wind deficit areas behind an airport terminal building and their potential impacts on the aircraft landing on nearby runways.A computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation of the wind flow over an airport terminal building was performed in this study of the effect of the building wake on landing *** normal meteorological conditions,the studied airport terminal building causes limited effects on landing aircraft because most of the aircraft have already landed before entering the turbulent wake *** simulating the approach of a tropical cyclone,additional CFD sensitivity tests were performed to study the impacts of building wake under extreme meteorological *** was found that,in a narrow range of prevalent wind directions with wind speeds larger than a certain threshold value,a substantial drop in wind speed(>3.6 m/s) along the glide path of aircraft was observed in the building *** CFD results also showed that under the most critical situation,a drop in wind speed as large as 6.4 m/s occurred right at the touchdown point of landing aircraft on the runway,an effect which may have a significant impact on aircraft *** study indicated that a comprehensive analysis of the potential impacts of building wake on aircraft operations should be carried out for airport terminals and associated buildings in airfields to ensure safe aviation operation under all meteorological conditions and to facilitate implementation of precautionary measures.

The study evaluated the biodegradable ability of bio- flocculant that is a bio-polymer extracted from a citrus peel *** citrus peel waste so call a household waste which was generated in abundance from one of the Universiti Sains malaysia *** and Oak were used as a reference and blank sample respectively as *** difference analysis was conducted which is anaerobic（Oxitop） and aerobic（Sapromat）.The finding reveals that both analyses are applicable for bio-polymer except for Oak that depicted no sign of degradation under anaerobic condition.

Chondrogenic potential of mesenchymal stem cells from horses using a magnetic 3D cell culture system

BACKGROUND mesenchymal stem cells(mSCs)represent a promising therapy for the treatment of equine joint diseases,studied due to their possible immunomodulatory characteristics and regenerative ***,the source of most suitable mSCs for producing cartilage for regenerative processes in conjunction with biomaterials for an enhanced function is yet to be *** To compare the chondrogenicity of mSCs derived from synovial fluid,bone marrow,and adipose tissue of horses,using the aggrecan *** mSCs from ten horses were cultured,phenotypic characterization was done with antibodies CD90,CD44 and CD34 and were differentiated into *** 3D cell culture system in which biocompatible nanoparticles consisting of gold,iron oxide,and poly-L-lysine were added to the cells,and they were forced by magnets to form one *** microspheroids were exposed to a commercial culture medium for 4 d,7 d,14 d,and 21 *** extraction was performed,and aggrecan was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** sulfate and aggrecan in the microspheroids were identified and localized by *** All cultured cells showed fibroblast-like appearance,the ability to adhere to the plastic surface,and were positive for CD44 and CD90,thus confirming the characteristics and morphology of *** soluble protein concentrations were higher in the microspheroids derived from adipose *** aggrecan concentration and the ratio of aggrecan to soluble proteins were higher in microspheroids derived from synovial fluid than in those derived from bone marrow,thereby showing chondrogenic *** from all sources expressed aggrecan and keratan sulfate when observed using confocal immunofluorescence *** sources of mSCs can synthesize aggrecan,however,mSCs from synovial fluid and adipose tissue have demonstrated better biocompatibility in a 3D environment,thus suggesting chondrogenic superiority

A ruptured recurrent small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumour causing hemoperitoneum

Hemoperitoneum is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of GIST. We reported a 54- year-old man who developed disseminated intra-abdominal recurrence from a previously resected gastrointestinal stromal tumour （GIST） of the small bowel, and the patient presented with hemoperitoneum. Emergent debulking surgery was performed. A high dose imatinib was prescribed. Despite the presence of residual disease, the patient was well clinically 8 months after the operation. Even though, there is no evidence to support the routine use of debulking surgery in the management of GIST. In our patient, disease progression after second line targeted therapy and the absence of alternative treatment options for spontaneous rupture and hemoperitoneum prompted us to treat the patient aggressively. Resection of the ruptured GIST was carried out for control of bleeding and to prevent recurrent bleeding in this patient with good surgical risks. During the treatment decision-making, the patient＇s general condition, the risk of surgery and the extent of dissemination were taken into consideration. In this patient who presented with spontaneous rupture of a small intestinal GIST, the novel use of targeted therapy and aggressive surgical treatment produced reasonably good survival outcome.

Background:Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ICC)is rare with limited evidence-based *** retrospective study evaluates the use of chemotherapy in patients with resected ***:The Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results(SEER)program database was used to identify patients with resected *** were stratified by date of diagnosis(2000-2004,2005-2009,2010-2014),T,and N *** logistic regression models identified predictors of chemotherapy ***-meier and Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify survival ***:One thousand and two hundred twenty-three patients met inclusion *** utilization increased over time(33%to 41%,P≤0.05).Chemotherapy use increased in lymph node(LN)positive patients[32%to 60%in 2010-2014;(P≤0.05)and T3/T4 disease(40%to 60%in 2010-2014;P≤0.01)],but not in patients with LN negative or T1/T2 *** positivity was associated with utilization of chemotherapy in 2005-2009 and *** survival increased from 32 to 41 months(P≤0.05).In LN positive patients,chemotherapy was associated with a decreased hazard ratio of death(P≤0.05)and T3/T4 disease was associated with an increased hazard ratio of death(P≤0.05).Conclusions:Adjuvant chemotherapy use in ICC has *** LN positive or patients with T3/T4 tumors are receiving chemotherapy,which may explain the improvement in overall survival.
