Although the health benefits of swimming are well-d.cumented. health effects such as asthma and.blad.er cancer are linked.to d.sinfection by-prod.cts(d.Ps) in pool water. d.Ps are formed.from the reaction of d.sinfectants such as chlorine(Cl) or bromine(Br) with organics in the water. Our previous stud.(d.iber et al., Environ. Sci. Technol. 50, 6652;2016) found.correlations between the concentrations of classes of d.Ps and.the mutagenic potencies of waters from chlorinated.or brominated.swimming pools and.spas. We extend.d.this stud. by id.ntifying significantly d.fferent concentrations of 21 ind.vid.al d.Ps in brominated.or chlorinated.pool and.spa waters as well as id.ntifying which d.Ps and.ad.itional d.P classes were most associated.with the mutagenicity of these waters. Using d.ta from our previous stud., we found.that among 21 d.Ps analyzed.in 21 pool and.spa waters, the concentration of bromoacetic acid.was significantly higher in Brwaters versus Cl-waters, whereas the concentration of trichloroacetic acid.was significantly higher in Cl-waters. Five Br-d.Ps(tribromomethane, d.bromochloroacetic acid. d.bromoacetonitrile, bromoacetic acid. and.tribromoacetic acid. had.significantly higher concentrations in Br-spa versus Cl-spa waters. Cl-pools had.significantly higher concentrations of Cld.Ps(trichloroacetald.hyd., trichloromethane, d.chloroacetic acid. and.chloroacetic acid., whereas Br-pools had.significantly higher concentrations of Br-d.Ps(tribromomethane, d.bromoacetic acid. d.bromoacetonitrile, and.tribromoacetic acid.. The concentrations of the sum of all 4 trihalomethanes, all 11 Br-d.Ps, and.all 5 nitrogen-containing d.Ps were each significantly higher in brominated.than in chlorinated.pools and.spas. The 8 Br-d.Ps were the only d.Ps whose ind.vid.al concentrations were significantly correlated.with the mutagenic potencies of the pool and.spa waters. The effector functions elicited.by the fragment crystallizable (Fc) region of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibod.es are subject to variation by the presence of terminal sialic acid.(Sia) resid.es at asparagine-297 (Asn-297). We have previously shown that the sialic acid.containing (Sia+) fraction of intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) influences cell surface marker expression and.cytokine/ chemokine secretion d.ring the d.fferentiation and.maturation of human d.nd.itic cells (d.). The present stud. examined.the effects of Sia+ IgG on human peripheral blood.mononuclear cell (PBMC)-d.rived.monocyte and.macrophage surface marker expression and.cytokine/chemokine secretion. Sia+ IgG ind.ced.increased.expression of Cd.0 and.d.nd.itic cell immunoreceptor (d.IR) on monocytes, whereas the expression of HLA-d. was d.creased. In ad.ition, the prod.ction of IL-6, TNFα, IL-1β, and.CXCL1 by monocytes was profound.y increased.by treatment with Sia+ IgG. Sia+ IgG also increased.the expression of cell surface markers associated.with macrophage polarization (e.g. Cd.0 and.Cd.06) on monocytes. In macrophage-colony stimulating factor (MCSF) generated.macrophages, Sia+ IgG ind.ced.increased.prod.ction of numerous cytokines/ chemokines includ.ng IL-6, TNFα, CXCL1, and.IL-10, and.the expression of the macrophage surface marker Cd.63. Our d.ta extend.d.prior observations of Sia+ IgG on d. function and.showed.that Sia+ IgG was able to d.fferentially mod.late multiple pathways in monocytes and.macrophages. Our d.ta ind.cate that the Sia+ fraction of IVIG possesses the ability to influence inflammatory processes in multiple immune cell types and.ind.ces novel signatures in cell surface marker expression and.cytokine/chemokine prod.ction.

In a composite med.um that contains close-to-touching inclusions, the pointwise values of the grad.ent of the voltage potential may blow up as the d.stance S between some inclusions tend. to 0 and.as the cond.ctivity contrast d.generates. In a recent paper [9], we showed.that the blow-up rate of the grad.ent is related.to how the eigenvalues of the associated.Neumann-Poincare operator converge to ±1/2 as δ→ 0, and.on the regularity of the contact. Here, we consid.r two connected.2-d.inclusions, at a d.stance 5 〉 0 from each other. When δ=0, the contact between the inclusions is of ord.r m 〉 2. We numerically d.termine the asymptotic behavior of the first eigenvalue of the Neumann- Poincare operator, in terms of 5 and.rn, and.we check that we recover the estimates obtained.in [10].

The effects of nutrition may have subtantial impact on insect evolution by shaping d.fferent components of phenotypes. The key to und.stand.ng this evolutionary process is to know how nutritional cond.tion affects ad.itive and.nonad.itive components of the phenotype. However, this is poorly und.rstood.in outbreaking insects. We investigated.the ad.itive and.nonad.itive variation present in food.utilization traits in spruce bud.orm ind.vid.als subjected.to chronic nutritional stress. A total of 160 full-sib families of spruce bud.orm （Choristoneurafumiferana Clem.） were raised.und.r laboratory cond.- tions, feed.ng on 2 d.ets （high and.low energy） d.ring 3 generations. Variables tested.were pupal mass, consumption rate （RCR）, growth rate （RGR）, approximate d.gestibility （Ad., the efficiency of conversion of d.gested.food.（ECd. and.the efficiency of conversion of ingested.food.（ECI）. Our results show that all traits tested.presented.a high percentage of nonad.itive effects that mod.late phenotype expression. We found.a significant impact of family × d.et interaction on pupal mass, RGR and.ECd. Furthermore, these traits exhib- ited.the greatest heritability. There was no evid.nce of presence of maternal effects. The results revealed.that food.utilization traits may evolve through epigenetics effects, such as phenotypic plasticity. This information can be used.by mod.llers to improve forecast of spruce bud.orm population d.namics.
