Supplementation of vitamin E or a botanical extract as antioxidants to improve growth performance and health of growing pigs housed under thermoneutral or heat-stressed conditions

Background Heat stress has severe negative consequences on performance and health of pigs,leading to significant economic *** objective of this study was to investigate the effects of supplemental vitamin E and a botanical extract in feed or drinking water on growth performance,intestinal health,and oxidative and immune status in grow-ing pigs housed under heat stress *** Duplicate experiments were conducted,each using 64 crossbred pigs with an initial body weight of 50.7±3.8 and 43.9±3.6 kg and age of 13-week and 12-week,***(n=128)were housed individually and assigned within weight blocks and sex to a 2×4 factorial arrangement consisting of 2 environments(thermo-neutral(21.2℃)or heat-stressed(30.9℃))and 4 supplementation treatments(control diet;control+100 IU/L of D-α-tocopherol in water;control+200 IU/kg of DL-α-tocopheryl-acetate in feed;or control+400 mg/kg of a botanical extract in feed).Results Heat stress for 28 d reduced(P≤0.001)final body weight,average daily gain,and average daily feed intake(-7.4 kg,-26.7%,and-25.4%,respectively)but no effects of supplementation were detected(P>0.05).Serum vitamin E increased(Pmin E supplementation in water and in feed(1.64 vs.3.59 and 1.64 vs.3.24),but not for the botanical extract(1.64 vs.1.67 mg/kg)and was greater when supplemented in water ***(P=0.002).Liver vitamin E increased(Pmin E supplementations in water(3.9 vs.31.8)and feed(3.9 vs.18.0),but not with the botanical extract(3.9 vs.4.9 mg/kg).Serum malondialdehyde was reduced with heat stress on d 2,but increased on d 28(interaction,Pmentation compared to *** proliferation was reduced(P=0.037)in the jejunum under heat stress,but increased in the ileum when vitamin E was supplemented in feed and water under heat stress(interaction,P=0.04).Tumor necrosis factor-αin jejunum and ileum mucosa decreased by heat stress(P<0.05)and was re

Composition， Distribution and Constraint Factors of Fe Isotope(δFe) in the Surface Soils of the Tibetan Plateau

Iron isotopes， represented by δ56Fe， serve as valuable tools for constraining the surface iron processes and as potent tracers for studying the biogeochemical cycle of iron. Nevertheless， our comprehension of iron isotopes in the land surface processes of the Tibetan Plateau （TP） remains limited. In this study， we present the results of iron isotopic composition (δ56Fe) in the surface soils of the TP， encompassing both glacial and non-glacial regions characterized by rugged and flat topographies. Our findings reveal that soil δ56Fe values ranged from -0.01±0.05‰ to 0.14±0.01‰， with the highest values observed in eastern locations （0.14‰） and the lowest appeared in the northeast （-0.1‰）. On a global scale， the δ56Fe values observed in Tibetan soils exhibited relatively small variability compared to reservoirs marked by significant iron isotope fractionation. By contrast， the range of TP soils measured here was slightly larger than that of the Chinese Loess. Furthermore， we discerned noticeable spatial variations in δ56Fe across the large-scale region of TP， indicating a gradual increase trend from the northeast to the south and from the west to the east. These regional disparities in δ56Fe likely arise from a combination of constraining factors， including differences in mineralogy， lithological variations， organic matter content， and variations in chemical weathering intensity. This study is pivotal in advancing our understanding of land surface iron isotope δ56Fe dynamics and its role in the biogeochemical cycle within the TP region.

Impaired Cognition and Stroke Rehabilitation Outcomes: Are They Related?

Background: Stroke survivors who exhibit impaired cognition at admission to inpatient rehabilitation may experience participation challenges and poorer functional outcomes than those without impaired cognition. Differences in functional outcomes between stroke survivors with and without impaired cognition may be attributed to age, level of cognitive impairment, and severity of stroke. materials and methods: A retrospective secondary data analysis was conducted using health-related administrative data acquired from a Southwestern Ontario hospital’s stroke rehabilitation database. The aim was to explore potential linkages between post-stroke impaired cognition and functional gains, rehabilitation stays, and living settings after discharge from rehabilitation. Results: An aggregate sample of 393 males and 314 females subclassified as experiencing mild, moderate, and severe stroke was analyzed. At inpatient rehabilitation admission, 21.5% (n = 152) of these patients had no impaired cognition, 33.7% (n = 238) had mild impaired cognition, 22.2% (n = 157) had moderate impaired cognition, and 22.6% (n = 160) had severe impaired cognition. Cognitively impaired stroke patients were significantly (p 0.001) older, had (mostly) moderate to severe stroke with significantly (p = 0.012) more moderate cognitive impairment, had significantly (p 0.001) longer rehabilitation stays, and a high propensity for being discharged to longer-term care facilities compared to non-cognitively impaired patients. Conclusion: Presence of significant dissimilarity in rehabilitation stays and post-discharge destinations among stroke survivors with and without cognitive impairment is attributed to the age of the patient, level of cognitive impairment, and rigorous rehabilitation interventions.

Thermomechanical modelling of Industrial Vessels that Contain Refractory masonry Linings

Some refractory linings that protect metallic vessels from the hot temperature of the products they contain are made of masonries with or without *** joints play an important role,reducing the stresses in the masonries during ***,the presence of these joints makes the behaviour of the masonry nonlinear and *** perform a thermomechanical simulation using a finite element method of an industrial vessel that contains hundreds or thousands of bricks and joints,microscopic models are not suitable due to the high computational time and the management of the behaviour of the joints(opening/closing)which affects the *** overcome these problems,it is proposed to replace the masonry by a homogeneous material that has a behaviour equivalent to the set of bricks and joints,using a periodic homogenization *** the joints can be closed or open,the equivalent material will have a different behaviour according to the joint ***,refractory materials have an elastic-viscoplastic behaviour at high ***,the equivalent material will have an orthotropic elastic-viscoplastic behaviour,requiring a nonlinear homogenisation *** overview of this approach developed at University of Orléans is presented with two industrial applications(blast-furnace and steel ladle).
