Effects of ultrasonic waves on carbon dioxide solubility in brine at different pressures and temperatures

The adverse impacts of CO2 emission on the global warming highlight the importance of carbon capture and storage technology and geological storage of CO2 under solubility trapping mechanisms. Enhancing the solubility of CO2 in formation water has always been the focus of research in the area of CO2 sequestration. Ultrasound techniques are one of the environmentally friendly methods that use high-intensity acoustic waves to improve gas solubility in liquids. Ultrasonic waves can alter the properties of different phases that lead to chemical reactions and provide a means to increase the solubility of CO2 in connate water. In this study, we investigated the effects of ultrasound on the solubility of CO2 in connate water under different conditions of pressure, temperature, and salinity. The results showed that the solubility of CO2 was improved with increasing pressure under ultrasonic effects.However, the solubility of CO2 was inversely proportional to the increase in brine salinity and temperature. Therefore,it was concluded that the solubility of CO2 might be enhanced in the presence of ultrasound.

Developing a phenomenological model to simulate single and mixed scale formation during flow in porous media:Coupling a salt precipitation model with an ion transport equation under dynamic conditions

Water flooding and pressure maintenance are recommended to improve oil recovery practices after low recovery of petroleum reservoirs occurs during primary production.Salt crystal formation is a frequent occurrence when using these techniques.Several experimental,numerical,and theoretical studies have been done on the mechanisms underlying scaling and permeability reduction in porous media;however,there has not been a satisfactory model developed.This study developed a phenomenological model to predict formation damage caused by salt deposition.Compared with existing models,which provide a scaling tendency,the proposed model predicts the profile of scale deposition.The salt precipitation model simulates reactive fluid flow through porous media.A thermodynamic,kinetic,and flow hydrodynamic model was developed and coupled with the ion transport equation to describe the movement of ions.Further,a set of carefully designed dynamic experiments were conducted and the data were compared with the model predictions.Model forecasts and experimental data were observed to have an average absolute error(AAE)ranging from 0.68%to 5.94%,which indicates the model's suitability.

La,Ce co-doped ZnO nanorods(ZnLC)were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal route.The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction,Raman spectroscopy,field-emission scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive X-ray,transmission electron microscopy,UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photo luminescence spectroscopy.The La and Ce doping enhanced the visible light absorption ability of ZnLC and a red shift was detected for ZnLC.Under simulated solar light irradiation,the ZnO doped with 3 at%La and 1 at%Ce(ZnLC1)degrades methylene blue(MB)more effectively than those of pure ZnO,La-doped ZnO(ZnL)and commercially available ZnO.The improved photocatalytic performance of ZnLC1 can be attributed to the high charge separation efficiency as demonstrated by the photoluminescence spectra.Additionally,the photocatalytic experiments reveal that several parameters have their own impact on the MB degradation.Using a variety of radical scavengers,it is discovered that superoxide anion radical plays a crucial role in the degradation of MB.The ZnLC1 is also reused several times without noticeable decrease of photoactivity,indicating that it has a substantial potential for environmental remediation applications.

The effects of different Zr additions(0.05wt.%-0.5wt.%)on the structure and tensile properties of an Al-4.5Cu-0.3Mg-0.05Ti(wt.%)alloy solidified under a high cooling rate(18℃·s^(-1)),in as-cast and T6 heat-treated conditions were studied.The as-cast structure of the alloy consists of equiaxed grains ofα-Al with an average size of 64μm which is unaffected by the Zr additions,indicating the ineffectiveness of Zr in the grain refinement of the alloy.Scanning electron microscopy,along with X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of elongatedθ-Al2Cu at the grain boundaries;in addition,coarse Al3Zr particles exist in the intergranular regions of the 0.5wt.%Zr-containing alloy.After the T6 heat treatment,the elongatedθparticles were fragmented;however,the coarse Al3Zr particles remained unchanged in the microstructure.Also,the formation of fineβ’-Al3Zr andθ’’-Al3Cu/θ’-Al2Cu phases during T6 heat treatment was revealed by transmission electron microscopy.The results of the tensile tests showed that the Zr additions increase the strength of the alloy in both as-cast and T6 heat-treated conditions,but reduce its elongation,especially with 0.5wt.%Zr addition.The 0.3wt.%Zr-added alloy in the T6 heat-treated condition has the highest quality index value(249 MPa).Fractography of the fracture surfaces of the alloys revealed ductile fracture mode including dimples and cracked intermetallic phases in both conditions.

Relieving congestion significantly influences the operation and security of the transmission network.Consequently,the congestion alleviation of transmission network in all power systems is imperative.Moreover,it could prevent price spikes and/or involuntary load shedding and impose high expenses on the transimission network,especially in case of contingency.Traditionally,the increasing or decreasing generation rescheduling has been used as one of the most imperative approaches for correctional congestion management when a contingency occurs.However,demand response programs(DRPs)could also be a vital tool for managing the congestion.Therefore,the simultaneous employment of generation rescheduling and DRPs is proposed for congestion management in case of contingency.The objective is to reschedule the generation of power plants and to employ DRPs in such a way so as to lessen the cost of congestion.The crow search algorithm is employed to determine the solution.The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach are assessed through the tests conducted on IEEE 30-bus and 57-bus test systems.The results of various case studies indicate the better performance of the proposed approach in comparison with different approaches presented in the literature.

Commercially pure titanium and titanium alloys have been among the most commonly used materials for biomedical applications since the 1950 s.Due to the excellent mechanical tribological properties,corrosion resistance,biocompatibility,and antibacterial properties of titanium,it is getting much attention as a biomaterial for implants.Furthermore,titanium promotes osseointegration without any additional adhesives by physically bonding with the living bone at the implant site.These properties are crucial for producing high-strength metallic alloys for biomedical applications.Titanium alloys are manufactured into the three types ofα,β,andα+β.The scientific and clinical understanding of titanium and its potential applications,especially in the biomedical field,are still in the early stages.This review aims to establish a credible platform for the current and future roles of titanium in biomedicine.We first explore the developmental history of titanium.Then,we review the recent advancement of the utility of titanium in diverse biomedical areas,its functional properties,mechanisms of biocompatibility,host tissue responses,and various relevant antimicrobial strategies.Future research will be directed toward advanced manufacturing technologies,such as powder-based additive manufacturing,electron beam melting and laser melting deposition,as well as analyzing the effects of alloying elements on the biocompatibility,corrosion resistance,and mechanical properties of titanium.Moreover,the role of titania nanotubes in regenerative medicine and nanomedicine applications,such as localized drug delivery system,immunomodulatory agents,antibacterial agents,and hemocompatibility,is investigated,and the paper concludes with the future outlook of titanium alloys as biomaterials.

Grayscale image statistics of COVID-19 patient CT scans characterize lung condition with machine and deep learning

Background:Grayscale image attributes of computed tomography(CT)of pulmonary scans contain valuable information relating to patients with respiratory ailments.These attributes are used to evaluate the severity of lung conditions of patients confirmed to be with and without COVID-19.Method:Five hundred thirteen CT images relating to 57 patients(49 with COVID-19;8 free of COVID-19)were collected at Namazi Medical Centre(Shiraz,Iran)in 2020 and 2021.Five visual scores(VS:0,1,2,3,or 4)are clinically assigned to these images with the score increasing with the severity of COVID-19-related lung conditions.Eleven deep learning and machine learning techniques(DL/ML)are used to distinguish the VS class based on 12 grayscale image attributes.Results:The convolutional neural network achieves 96.49%VS accuracy(18 errors from 513 images)successfully distinguishing VS Classes 0 and 1,outperforming clinicians’visual inspections.An algorithmic score(AS),involving just five grayscale image attributes,is developed independently of clinicians’assessments(99.81%AS accuracy;1 error from 513 images).Conclusion:Grayscale CT image attributes can be successfully used to distinguish the severity of COVID-19 lung damage.The AS technique developed provides a suitable basis for an automated system using ML/DL methods and 12 image attributes.

High voltage direct current(HVDC)systems are efficient solutions for the integration of large-scale renewable energy sources with the main power grids.The rapid development of the HVDC grid has resulted in a growing interest in DC circuit breakers(DCCBs).A fast and reliable circuit breaker is a necessary requirement in the development of large scale HVDC grids.This paper provides a comprehensive review and survey of the HVDC CBs and discusses potential research directions.Operational principles and the main features of various DCCBs are described and their merits and shortcomings are also highlighted.
