Grand Research Plan for Neural Circuits of Emotion and Memory-Current status of neural circuit studies in China

During recent years, major advances have been made in neuroscience, i.e., asynchronous release, three-dimensional structural data sets, saliency maps, magnesium in brain research, and new functional roles of long non-coding RNAs. Especially, the development of optogenetic technology provides access to important information about relevant neural circuits by allowing the activation of specific neurons in awake mammals and directly observing the resulting behavior. The Grand Research Plan for Neural Circuits of Emotion and Memory was launched by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It takes emotion and memory as its main objects, making the best use of cutting-edge technologies from medical science, life science and information science. In this paper, we outline the current status of neural circuit studies in China and the technologies and methodologies being applied, as well as studies related to the impairments of emotion and memory. In this phase, we are making efforts to repair the current deficiencies by making adjustments, mainly involving four aspects of core scientific issues to investigate these circuits at multiple levels. Five research directions have been taken to solve important scientific problems while the Grand Research Plan is implemented. Future research into this area will be multimodal, incorporating a range of methods and sciences into each project. Addressing these issues will ensure a bright future, major discoveries, and a higher level of treatment for all affected by debilitating brain illnesses.

Microglial activation that occurs rapidly after closed head injury may play important and complex roles in neuroinflammation-associated neuronal damage and *** previously reported that induced neural stem cells can modulate the behavior of activated microglia via CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling,influencing their activation such that they can promote neurological ***,the mechanism of CXCR4 upregulation in induced neural stem cells remains *** this study,we found that nuclear factor-κB activation induced by closed head injury mouse serum in microglia promoted CXCL12 and tumor necrosis factor-αexpression but suppressed insulin-like growth factor-1 ***,recombinant complement receptor 2-conjugated Crry(CR2-Crry)reduced the effects of closed head injury mouse serum-induced nuclear factor-κB activation in microglia and the levels of activated microglia,CXCL12,and tumor necrosis factor-α.Additionally,we observed that,in response to stimulation(including stimulation by CXCL12 secreted by activated microglia),CXCR4 and Crry levels can be upregulated in induced neural stem cells via the interplay among CXCL12/CXCR4,Crry,and Akt signaling to modulate microglial *** agreement with these in vitro experimental results,we found that Akt activation enhanced the immunoregulatory effects of induced neural stem cell grafts on microglial activation,leading to the promotion of neurological recovery via insulin-like growth factor-1 secretion and the neuroprotective effects of induced neural stem cell grafts through CXCR4 and Crry upregulation in the injured cortices of closed head injury ***,these beneficial effects of Akt activation in induced neural stem cells were positively correlated with the therapeutic effects of induced neural stem cells on neuronal injury,cerebral edema,and neurological disorders post–closed head *** conclusion,our findings reveal that Akt activation may enhance the immunoregulatory effects of induced neura

AIM: To evaluate the association between xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD), genetic polymorphism Lys751Gln and esophageal cancer risk. METHODS: We searched PubMed up to September 1, 2010 to identify eligible studies. A total of 10 casecontrol studies including 2288 cases and 4096 controls were included in the meta-analysis. Statistical analysis was performed with Review Manage version 4.2. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of the ***: The results suggested that there is no significant association between XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism and esophageal cancer susceptibility in the overall population. However, in subgroup analysis by histology type, a significant association was found between XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism and esophageal adenocarcinoma (for CC vs AA: OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.01-1.55, P = 0.05 for heterogeneity). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggested that XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism may be associated with increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Receiver Power Allocation and Transmitter Power Control Analysis for Multiple-Receiver Wireless Power Transfer Systems

As different power has its own receivers,this paper analyzes and designs a multiple-receiver wireless power transfer(WPT)system *** equivalent circuit model of the system is established to analyze the key parameters including transmitter power,receiver power,transmission efficiency,and each receiver power allocation.A control circuit is proposed to achieve the maximum transmission efficiency and transmitter power control and arbitrary receiver power allocation ratios for different *** the proposed control circuit,receivers with different loads can allocate appropriate power according to its power demand,the transmitter power and system efficiency do not vary with the change of the number of ***,this control circuit is validated using a 130-kHz WPT system with three receivers whose power received is 3:10:12,and the overall system efficiency can reach as high as 55.5%.

Double-averaged velocity profile and its representative line for turbulent flows over two-dimensional fixed dunes

A laboratory study was conducted using particle image velocimetry(PIV)to measure flow velocity distributions over two-dimensional smooth and rough fixed *** comprised 28 tests,each yielding 146 velocity profiles over one complete dune *** kinds of double-averaged velocity profiles were computed,one based on all the 146 lines of data(called global average),and the others from only some of them(called partial average).The results show that the global average velocity distribution is generally close to the partial average profile derived from evenly-distributed three or five lines along one dune ***,the global average velocity profile can also be reasonably approximated using a single profile,measured at the representative line in this *** representative line is found to locate near the reattachment *** result would be helpful to simplify measurements of general velocity distribution for a flow over *** paper also applies the concept of representative line to the description of distributioAverage velocity profile turbulent flows fixed dunes representative linens of turbulence characteristics.

It was conjectured by Bouchet that every bidirected graph which admits a nowhere-zero κ flow will admit a nowhere-zero 6-flow. He proved that the conjecture is true when 6 is replaced by 216. Zyka improved the result with 6 replaced by 30. Xu and Zhang showed that the conjecture is true for 6-edge-connected graphs. And for 4-edge-connected graphs, Raspaud and Zhu proved it is true with 6 replaced by 4. In this paper, we show that Bouchet＇s conjecture is true with 6 replaced by 15 for 3-edge-connected graphs.

In multi-agent reinforcement learning(MARL),the behaviors of each agent can influence the learning of others,and the agents have to search in an exponentially enlarged joint-action ***,it is challenging for the multi-agent teams to explore in the *** may achieve suboptimal policies and fail to solve some complex *** improve the exploring efficiency as well as the performance of MARL tasks,in this paper,we propose a new approach by transferring the knowledge across *** from the traditional MARL algorithms,we first assume that the reward functions can be computed by linear combinations of a shared feature function and a set of taskspecific ***,we define a set of basic MARL tasks in the source domain and pre-train them as the basic knowledge for further ***,once the weights for target tasks are available,it will be easier to get a well-performed policy to explore in the target ***,the learning process of agents for target tasks is speeded up by taking full use of the basic knowledge that was learned *** evaluate the proposed algorithm on two challenging MARL tasks:cooperative boxpushing and non-monotonic *** experiment results have demonstrated the improved performance compared with state-of-the-art MARL algorithms.

From Rybicki’s analysis using the Fourier slice theorem,mathematically it is possible to reproduce uniquely an edge-on axisymmetric galaxy’s 3D light distribution from its 2D surface *** galaxies from a cosmological simulation,we examine the ability of Syer and Tremaine’s madeto-measure method and Schwarzschild’s method for stellar dynamical modeling to do so for edge-on oblate axisymmetric ***,we find that the methods do not accurately recover the 3D distributions,with the made-to-measure method producing more accurate estimates than Schwarzschild’s *** results have implications broader than just luminosity density,and affect other luminosity-weighted distributions within galaxies,for example,age and metallicity.
