In this study, we evaluated genetic variants of the androgen metabolism genes CYP17A1, CYP3A4, and CYP3A43 to determine whether they play a role in the development of prostate cancer （PCa） in Korean men. The study population included 240 pathologically diagnosed cases of PCa and 223 age-matched controls. Among the 789 singie-nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） database variants detected, 129 were reported in two Asian groups （han Chinese and Japanese） in the HapMap database. Only 21 polymorphisms of CYP17A1, CYP3A4, and CYP3A43 were selected based on linkage disequilibrium in Asians （d = 1）, locations （SNPs in exons were preferred）, and amino acid changes and were assessed. In addition, we performed haplotype analysis for the 21 SNPs in CYP17A1, CYP3A4, and CYP3A43 genes. To determine the association between genotype and haplotype distributions of patients and controls, logistic analyses were carried out, controlling for age. Twelve sequence variants and five major haplotypes were identified in CYP17A1. Five sequence variants and two major haplotypes were identified in CYP3A4. Four sequence variants and four major haplotypes were observed in CYP3A43. CYP17A1 haplotype-2 （Ht-2）（odds ratio [OR], 1.51; 95% confidence interval [Cl], 1.04-2,18） was associated with PCa susceptibility. CYP3A4 Ht-2 （OR. 1.87; 95% CI. 1.02-3.43） was associated with PCa metastatic potential according to tumor stage, rs17115149 （OR： 1.96; 95% Ch 1.04-3.68） and CYP17A1 Ht-4 （OR： 2.01; 95% Ch 1.07-4.11） showed a significant association with histologic aggressiveness according to Gleason score. Genetic variants of CYP17A1 and CYP3A4 may play a role in the development of PCa in Korean men.

There has been substantial interest in designing and fabricating electrochemical non-enzyme sensors for glucose detection with a focus on the nanocomposites used between metal oxide and the two-dimensional *** this work,Co_(3)O_(4)/reduced graphene oxide(rGO)nanocomposite was obtained and used as a modified electrochemical electrode for the detection of trace *** to the results,the electrocatalytic performances of Co_(3)O_(4)nanoparticles for the oxidation of glucose were substantially enhanced with the addition of a small amount of r ***,the Co_(3)O_(4)/r GO modified electrode exhibited a sensitivity of 82μA·mmol^(-1)·cm^(-2),a detection limit of 50μmol·L^(-1)(signal noise ratio(S/N)=3),and a fast response time of about 1 s under optimal *** enhanced performances of the Co_(3)O_(4)/r GO modified electrode are attributable to the high absorption oxygen(O_(Ads))and synergistic effect between Co_(3)O_(4)and r *** results indicate that Co_(3)O_(4)/r GO nanocomposite is a promising candidate for being used as the active material in real-world electrochemical biosensors.

AIM:To analyze the clinicopathologic characteristics of surgically resected gastric lymphoma patients. METHODS:We retrospectively analyzed 57 surgically resected gastric lymphoma patients,dividing them into 2 subgroups:Low grade MALToma (the LG group),High grade MALToma and Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (the HG group). RESULTS:The numbers of patients were:20 in the LG group, 37 in the HG *** diagnostic rate of gastroscopy was 34.8% at primary diagnosis and 50% including differential *** positive rates of Hpyloriwere similar between the 2 groups (68% vs77%).Multiple lesions were found in 19.3%.The proportion of mucosal and submucosal lesions was 80.0%(16/20) in the LG group,and 24.3%(9/37) in the HG group (Phan in the total gastrectomy group (P=0.50). CONCLUSION:The HG groups had a more advanced stage and a higher recurrence rate than the LG *** there was no difference between subtotal and total gastrectomies,more careful assessments of multiplicities and radical resections with lymph node dissections seem to be needed because of multiplicity and LN invasion even in LG group.

Dear Editor,We would like to introduce a simple technique for the efficient rescue and refixation of a subluxated retropupillary iris claw intraocular lens(RPICIOL;Artisan■Aphakia model 205,Ophtec BV,Groningen,the Netherlands).The RPICIOL is a suture-less,posterior iris-fixated,polyinethyl methacrylate intraocular lens(IOL)that has gained widespread recognition and expanding use because of its efficiency in management of aphakia,combined with long-term intraocular safety and excellent sustained visual outcomes11 Postoperative dislocation/disenclavation of the RPICIOL may occur spontaneously or following trauma,with a rate reportedly between 0 to 10%[4-6].

To accelerate the discovery of materials through computations and experiments,a well-established protocol closely bridging these methods is *** introduce a high-throughput screening protocol for the discovery of bimetallic catalysts that replace palladium(Pd),where the similarities in the electronic density of states patterns were employed as a screening *** first-principles calculations,we screened 4350 bimetallic alloy structures and proposed eight candidates expected to have catalytic performance comparable to that of *** experiments demonstrate that four bimetallic catalysts indeed exhibit catalytic properties comparable to those of ***,we discover a bimetallic(Ni-Pt)catalyst that has not yet been reported for H_(2)O_(2) direct *** particular,Ni_(61)Pt_(39) outperforms the prototypical Pd catalyst for the chemical reaction and exhibits a 9.5-fold enhancement in cost-normalized *** protocol provides an opportunity for the catalyst discovery for the replacement or reduction in the use of the platinum-group metals.

The quantitative trait loci （QTLs） for the dead leaf rate （DLR） and the dead seedling rate （DSR） at the different rice growing periods after transplanting under alkaline stress were identified using an F2：3 population, which included 200 individuals and lines derived from a cross between two japonica rice cultivars Gaochan 106 and Changbai 9 with microsatellite markers. The DLR detected at 20 days to 62 days after transplanting under alkaline stress showed continuous normal or near normal distributions in F3 lines, which was the quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes. The DSR showed a continuous distribution with 3 or 4 peaks and was the quantitative trait controlled by main and multiple genes when rice was grown for 62 days after transplanting under alkaline stress. Thirteen QTLs associated with DLR were detected at 20 days to 62 days after transplanting under alkaline stress. Among these, qDLR9-2 located in RM5786-RM160 on chromosome 9 was detected at 34 days, 41 days, 48 days, 55 days, and 62 days, respectively; qDLR4 located in RM3524-RM3866 on chromosome 4 was detected at 34 days, 41 days, and 48 days, respectively; qDLR7-1 located in RM3859-RM320 on chromosome 7 was detected at 20 days and 27 days; and qDLR6-2 in RM1340-RM5957 on chromosome 6 was detected at 55 days and 62 days, respectively. The alleles of both qDLR9-2 and qDLR4 were derived from alkaline sensitive parent ＂Gaochanl06＂. The alleles of both qDLR7-1 and qDLR6-2 were from alkaline tolerant parent Changbai 9. These gene actions showed dominance and over dominance primarily. Six QTLs associated with DSR were detected at 62 days after transplanting under alkaline stress. Among these, qDSR6-2 and qDSR8 were located in RM1340-RM5957 on chromosome 6 and in RM3752-RM404 on chromosome 8, respectively, which were associated with DSR and accounted for 20.32% and 18.86% of the observed phenotypic variation, respectively; qDSR11-2 and qDSR11-3 were located in RM536-RM479 and RM2596-RM286 on chromoso

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation （rTMS） has been utilized as a therapeutic tool for neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer＇s disease. However, the precise mechanisms of its clinical effects remain unknown. β-amyloid （Aβ） exhibits direct neurotoxic effects and is closely related to neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer＇s disease. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that the neuroprotective effects of rTMS are related to the mechanisms of protection against Aβ neurotoxicity. Organotypic hippocampal slices were prepared from 8-day old, Sprague Dawley rats. The tissue slices were exposed to 100 μmol/L Al3142 since day 12 in vitro with and without high-frequency （20 Hz） magnetic stimulation. Magnetic stimulation efficacy was evaluated by measuring neuronal nuclei （NeuN） protein expression and by observing cultures following propidium iodide fluorescence staining and bromodeoxyuridine （BrdU） immunohistochemistry. Lactate dehydrogenase activity was detected in the culture media to evaluate hippocampal neuronal damage. Our results demonstrated that high-frequency magnetic stimulation significantly reversed the reduction of NeuN protein expression because of Aβ1-42 exposure （P 〈 0.05） and significantly reduced the number of damaged cells in the hippocampal slices （P 〈 0.05）. However, lactate dehydrogenase levels and anti-BrdU staining results did not reveal any statistical differences These findings indicate that high-frequency magnetic stimulation might have protective effect on hippocampal neurons from Aβ1-42 neurotoxicity.

Heavy alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction （ED）; however, the acute effects of ethanol （EtOH） on penile tissue are not fully understood. We sought to investigate the effects of EtOH on corporal tissue tonicity, as well as the intracellular Ca^2＋ concentration （[Ca^2＋]i） and potassium channel activity of corporal smooth muscle. Strips of corpus cavernosum （CC） from rabbits were mounted in organ baths for isometric tension studies. Electrical field stimulation （EFS） was applied to strips precontracted with 10 μmol L^-1 phenylephrine as a control. EtOH was then added to the organ bath and incubated before EFS. The [Ca^2＋]i levels were monitored by the ratio of fura-2 fluorescence intensities using the fura-2 loading method. Single-channel and whole-cell currents were recorded by the conventional patch-clamp technique in short-term cultured smooth muscle cells from human CC tissue. The corpus cavernosal relaxant response of EFS was decreased in proportion to the concentration of EtOH. EtOH induced a sustained increase in [Ca^2＋]i in a dose-dependent manner, Extracellular application of EtOH significantly increased whole-cell K^＋ currents in a concentration-dependent manner （P 〈 0.05）. EtOH also increased the open probability in cell-attached patches; however, in inside-out patches, the application of EtOH to the intracellular aspect of the patches induced slight inhibition of Ca^2＋-activated potassium channel （KCa） activity. EtOH caused a dose-dependent increase in cavemosal tension by alterations to [Ca^2＋]i. Although EtOH did not affect KCa channels directly, it increased the channel activity by increasing [Ca^2＋]i. The increased corpus cavemosal tone caused by EtOH might be one of the mechanisms of ED after heavy drinking.
