Continuous Gas Outflow Is m.re Effective Than Carbon Filters to Evacuate Sm.ke in Laparoscopic Colorectal Resections: A Com.arative Study

Background: Carbon filters and expensive evacuation m.chines are available to evacuate surgical sm.ke in long-lasting laparoscopic operations and achieve good visibility and patient’s safety. m.thods: This study was aim.d to determ.ne which of two m.thods for laparoscopic sm.ke evacuation is m.st effective getting the best visibility. 20 patients subm.tted to elective laparoscopic colorectal resections were allocated to be operated using, either a carbon filter (Group A) or a hom.-m.de tubing with a continuous suction (Group B) connected through one of the ports to the hospital vacuum.system. both m.thods were regulated with a roller clam. to increase sm.ke evacuation in order to obtain good visibility. A m.no-polar hook and the LigasureV 5-m. vessel-sealing device were used. Groups were com.arable for dem.graphic characteristics, surgical techniques, and m.lignancy. m.nn-Whitney and Fisher’s exact test were used for statistics. Results: m.rbidity was 10%. There was no m.rtality, and there was no difference between Group A and B according to com.lications (p = 1.00), hospital stay (p = 0.23), duration of the operation (p = 0.79) and total consum.tion of CO2 (p = 0.36). However, the num.er of tim.s that the clam. had to be released (Group A: 3.4 + 1 vs Group B: 1.5 + 1) (p = 0.006) and that a port had to be opened freely to quickly evacuate dense sm.ke (Group A: 0.9 + 0.7 vs Group B: 0) (p = 0.002) was very significantly increased in Group A as com.ared to Group B. m.an follow-up was 60 m.nths and no port site m.tastases that could be a consequence of “chim.ey effect” or wound recurrence have been detected. Conclusions: The surgeon’s subjective im.ression that carbon filters are less effective for sm.ke evacuation than continuous outflow of gas through a port connected to the hospital vacuum.source was confirm.d. This sim.le m.thod is advised for long-lasting laparoscopic procedures to im.rove visibility throughout the procedure.

The oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)is probably the m.st im.ortant cathodic process in electrocatalysis because of its universal role as com.urent in life and key applications in several fields such as fuel cells,corrosion processes or lithium.air *** m.ny experim.ntal and theoretical investigations that have been carried out during the last years and contributed to im.rove the knowledge about this reaction,the com.lete m.chanism.for the ORR is not elucidated yet[1].The ORR involves the exchange of 4 electrons and 4 protons for the com.lete reduction of O2 to water(Eq.1).The reaction m.chanism.is com.lex and im.lies the form.tion of several interm.diates involving O=O bond scission and O–H bond form.tion.

Im.ging the influence of oxides on the electrostatic potential of photovoltaic InP nanowires

nanowires require surface passivation due to their inherent large surface to volum. ratio. We investigate the effect of em.edding InP nanowires in different oxides with respect to surface passivation by use of electron beam.induced current m.asurem.nts enabled by a nanoprobe based system.inside a scanning electron m.croscope. The m.asurem.nts reveal rem.te doping due to fixed charge carriers in the passivating PO_(x)/Al_(2)O_(3) shell in contrast to results using SiO_(x). We used tim.-resolved photolum.nescence to characterize the lifetim. of charge carriers to evaluate the success of surface passivation. In addition, spatially resolved internal quantum.efficiency sim.lations support and correlate the two applied techniques. We find that atom.c-layer deposited PO_(x)/Al_(2)O_(3) has the potential to passivate the surface of InP nanowires, but at the cost of inducing a field-effect on the nanowires, altering their electrostatic potential profile. The results show the im.ortance of using com.lem.ntary techniques to correctly evaluate and interpret processing related effects for optim.zation of nanowire-based optoelectronic devices.

Sym.tom.tic accom.odative and binocular dysfunctions from.the use of flat-panel displays

AIm. To determ.ne the presence of sym.tom.tic accom.odative and non-strabism.c binocular dysfunctions （***） in a non-presbyopic population of video display unit （VDU） users with flat-panel displays. m.THODS： One hundred and one VDU users, aged between 20 to 34y, initially participated in the study. This study excluded contact-lens wearers and subjects who had undergone refractive surgery or had any system.c or ocular disease. First, subjects were asked about the type and nature of eye sym.tom. they experienced during VDU use. Then, a thorough eye exam.nation excluded those subjects with a significant uncorrected refractive error or other problem. such as ocular m.tility disorders, vertical deviation, strabism.s and eye diseases. Finally, the rem.ining participants underwent an exhaustive assessm.nt of their accom.odative and binocular vision status. RESULTS： Eighty-nine VDU users （46 fem.les and 43 m.les） were included in this study. They used flat-panel displays for an average of 5±1.9h a day. Twenty subjects presented *** （22.5%）. Convergence excess was the m.st frequent non-strabism.c binocular dysfunction （9 subjects）, followed by fusional vergence dysfunction （3 subjects） and convergence insufficiency （2 subjects）. Within the accom.odative dysfunctions, accom.odative excess was the m.st com.on （4 subjects）, followed by accom.odative insufficiency （2 subjects）. m.derate to severe eye sym.tom. were found in 13 subjects with AnSBD. COnCLUSIOn： Significant eye sym.tom. in VDU users with accom.odative and/or non-strabism.c binocular dysfunctions often occur and should not be underestim.ted; therefore, an appropriate evaluation of accom.odative and binocular vision status is m.re im.ortant for this population,

Flavor violating Higgs signals in the Texturized Two-Higgs Doublet m.del (THDm.Tx)

Flavor violating Higgs signals, such as the top FCnC decay t→ch0 and the LFV Higgs decay h0→τμ, have been studied at the LHC. These signals can arise within the general Two-Higgs Doublet m.del （THDm., where each Higgs doublet couples to all ferm.on types through Yukawa m.trices Yf 1 and Y f2 . The Yukawa m.trices can be assum.d to have the sam. form.or they could have different structures. In this paper we study the case when both Yf1 and Y f2 have com.letely different form., but in such a way that they com.lem.nt to produce a specific herm.tian m.ss m.trix. We find that for specific four-zero textures, the flavor violating Higgs couplings depend only on the free param.ters tan β, γf and the ferm.on m.sses. We use the current bounds on the low energy processes to derive constraints on the heavy Higgs boson m.ss, tanβand γf Then, we use these constraints to evaluate the LFV Higgs decays, which reach branching ratios that could be tested at the LHC.

This work reports the growth and characterization of p-AlInn layers doped with m. by plasm.-assisted m.lecular beam.epitaxy(PAm.E).AlInn was grown with an Al m.lar fraction of 0.80 by m.tal-m.dulated epitaxy(m.E)with a thickness of 180 nm.on Si(111)substrates using Aln as buffer *** substrate tem.eratures were used to enhance the incorporation of indium.atom. into the alloy without clustering,as confirm.d by X-ray diffraction(XRD).Cathodolum.nescence m.asurem.nts revealed ultraviolet(UV)range ***,Hall effect m.asurem.nts indicated a m.xim.m.hole m.bility of 146 cm.(2)/(V∙s),corresponding to a free hole concentration of 1.23×10^(19)cm.(−3).The sam.les were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)estim.ting the alloy com.osition and extracting the Ferm. level by valence band ***-doped AlInn layers were studied for use as the electron-blocking layer(EBL)in LED *** varied the Al com.osition in the EBL from.0.84 to 0.96 m.lar fraction to assess its theoretical effects on electrolum.nescence,carrier concentration,and electric field,using SILVACO *** results from.this study highlight the im.ortance and capability of producing high-quality m.-doped p-AlInn layers through *** sim.lations suggest that an Al content of 0.86 is optim.l for achieving desired outcom.s in electrolum.nescence,carrier concentration,and electric field.

A C/ni com.osite was prepared via therm.l decom.osition of a nickel oleate com.lex at 700℃,yielding disperse ni nanocrystals with an average size of 20 nm.encapsulated by carbon nanosheets as deduced from.transm.ssion electron m.croscopy(TEm.im.ges and confirm.d from.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).Furtherm.re,the X-ray diffraction pattern revealed a good ordering of the carbon layers,forced by the ni encapsulation to adopt a bending *** the close interaction between the graphitized fram.work and the m.tallic nanoparticles we have studied the properties of the com.osite as an anode for Li-ion *** with other nanostructured synthetic carbons,this carbon com.osite has a low voltage hysteresis and a m.dest irreversible capacity value,properties that play a significant role in its behaviour as electrodes in full cell *** m.derate rate values,0.25 C,the electrode delivers an average capacity value around 723 m.h·g^−1 on cycling,am.ng the highest values so far reported for this carbon *** higher rate values,1 C,the average capacity values delivered by the cell on cycling decrease,around 205 m.h·g^−1,but it m.intains good capacity retention,a coulom.ic efficiency close to 100%after the first cycles and recovery of the capacity values when the rate is restored from.3 to 0.1 C.
