Fast Single Image Haze Removal Method for Inhomogeneous Environment Using Variable Scattering Coefficient

The images capture in a bad environment usually loses its fidelity and contrast.As the light rays travel towards its destination they get scattered several times due to the tiny particles of fog and pollutants in the environment,therefore the energy gets lost due to multiple scattering till it arrives its destination,and this degrades the images.So the images taken in bad weather appear in bad quality.Therefore,single image haze removal is quite a bit tough task.Significant research has been done in the haze removal algorithm but in all the techniques,the coefficient of scattering is taken as a constant according to the homogeneous atmosphere but in real time this does not happen.Therefore,this paper introduces a simple and efficient method so that the scattering coefficient becomes variable according to the inhomogeneous environment.Then,this research aims to remove the haze with the help of a fast and effective algorithm i.e.,Prior Color Fading,according to the inhomogeneous environmental properties.Thereby,to filter the depth map,the authors used a weighted guided image filtering which removes the drawbacks of guided image filter.Afterwards the scattering coefficient is made variable according to the inhomogeneous atmosphere and then the Simple Color Balance Algorithm is applied so that the readability property of images can be increased.The proposed method tested on various general outdoor images and synthetic hazy images and analyzed on various parameters Mean Square Error(MSE),Root Mean Square Error(RMSE),Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR),Mean Structural Similarity(MSSIM)and the Universal Objective Quality Index(UQI).Experimental results for the proposed method show that the proposed approach provides better results as compared to the state-of-the-art haze removal algorithms.

Purpose： The main goal of this study is to discover the scientific evolution of Cancer-Related Symptoms in Complementary and Alternative Medicine research area, analyzing the articles indexed in the Web of Science database from 1980 to 2013.Design/Methodology/Approach： A co-word science mapping analysis is performed under a longitudinal framework（1980 to 2013）. The documental corpus is divided into two subperiods,1980–2008 and 2009–2013. Thus, the performance and impact rates, and conceptual evolution of the research field are shown.Findings： According to the results, the co-word analysis allows us to identify 12 main thematic areas in this emerging research field： anxiety, survivors and palliative care,meditation, treatment, symptoms and cancer types, postmenopause, cancer pain, low back pain, herbal medicine, children, depression and insomnia, inflammation mediators, and lymphedema. The different research lines are identified according to the main thematic areas,centered fundamentally on anxiety and suffering prevention. The scientific community can use this information to identify where the interest is focused and make decisions in different ways.Research limitation： Several limitations can be addressed： 1） some of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies may not have been included; 2） only the documents indexed in Web of Science are analyzed; and 3） the thematic areas detected could change if another dataset was considered.Practical implications： The results obtained in the present study could be considered as an evidence-based framework in which future studies could be built.Originality/value： Currently, there are no studies that show the thematic evolution of this research area.

The transcription factor ZEB1 promotes chemoresistance in prostate cancer cell lines

One of the factors promoting tumoral progress is the abnormal activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)program which has been associated with chemoresistance in tumoral cells.The transcription factor zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1(ZEB1),a key EMT activator,has recently been related to docetaxel resistance,the main chemotherapeutic used in advanced prostate cancer treatment.The mechanisms involved in this protective effect are still unclear.In a previous work,we demonstrated that ZEB1 expression induced an EMT-like phenotype in prostate cancer cell lines.In this work,we used prostate cancer cell lines 22Rvl and DU145 to study the effect of ZEB1 modulation on docetaxel resistance and its possible mechanisms.The results showed that ZEB1 overexpression conferred to 22Rvl cell resistance to docetaxel while its silencing made DU145 cells more sensitive to it.Analysis of resistance markers showed no presenee of ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1(MDR1)and no changes in breast cancer resistance protein(BCRP)or ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 10(MRP7).However,a correlation between ZEB1,multidrug resistance-associated protein 1(MRP1),and ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 4(MRP4)expression was observed.MRP4 inhibition,using MK571,resensitized cells with ZEB1 overexpression to docetaxel treatment.In addition,modulation of ZEB1 and subsequent change in MRP4 expression correlated with a lower apoptotic response to docetaxel,characterized by lower B-cell lymphoma 2(Bcl2),high BCL2-associated X protein(Bax),and high active caspase 3 expression.The response to docetaxel in our model seems to be mediated mainly by activation of the apoptotic death program.Our results showed that modulation of MRP4 could be a mediator of ZEBl-related resistance to docetaxel in prostate cancer,making it a possible marker for chemotherapy response in patients who do not express MDR1.

The transcription factor ZEB1 promotes an aggressive phenotype in prostate cancer cell lines

It has been reported that one of the factors that promotes tumoral progression is the abnormal activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition program. This process is associated with tumoral cells acquiring invasive and malignant properties and has the transcription factor zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 （ZEB1） as one of its main activators. However, the role of ZEB1 in promoting malignancy in prostate cancer （PC, a） is still unclear. Here, we report that ZEB1 expression correlates with Gleason score in PCa samples and that expression of ZEB1 regulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition and malignant characteristics in PCa cell lines. The results showed that ZEB1 expression is higher in samples of higher malignancy and that overexpression of ZEB1 was able to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition by upregulating the mesenchymal marker Vimentin and downregulating the epithelial marker E-Cadherin. On the contrary, ZEB 1 silencing repressed Vimentin expression and upregulated E-Cadherin. ZEB1 expression conferred enhanced motility and invasiveness and a higher colony formation capacity to 22Rvl cells whereas DU145 cells with ZEB1 silencing showed a decrease in those same properties. Background and aim Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),the virus responsible for the current pandemic,can have multi-organ impact.Recent studies show that liver injury could be a manifestation of the disease,and that liver disease could also be related to a worse prognosis.Our aim was to compare the characteristics of patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)due to SARS-CoV-2 who required intubation versus stable hospitalized patients to identify the early biochemical predictive factors of a severe course of COVID-19 and subsequent requirement for intubation,specifically in Mexican.Methods This was an observational case-control study nested in a cohort study.Complete medical records of patients admitted for confirmed COVID-19 at a tertiary level center in Mexico City were reviewed.Clinical and biochemical data were collected,and the characteristics of patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV)(cases)were compared with stable hospitalized patients without ventilation(controls).Results We evaluated 166 patients with COVID-19 due to SARS-CoV-2 infection;114(68.7%)were men,the mean age was 50.6±13.3 years,and 27(16.3%)required IMV.The comparative analysis between cases and controls showed(respectively)significantly lower blood oxygen saturation(SpO_(2))(73.5±12.0%vs.83.0±6.8%,P<0.0001)and elevated alanine aminotransferase(ALT)(128(14–1123)IU/L vs.33(8–453)IU/L,P=0.003),aspartate aminotransferase(AST)(214(17–1247)vs.44(12–498)IU/L,P=0.001),lactic dehydrogenase(LDH)(764.6±401.9 IU/L vs.461.0±185.6 IU/L,P=0.001),and D-dimer(3463(524–34,227)ng/mL vs.829(152–41,923)ng/mL,P=0.003)concentrations.Patients in the cases group were older(58.6±12.7 years vs.49.1±12.8 years,P=0.001).Multivariate analysis showed that important factors at admission predicting the requirement for IMV during hospitalization for COVID-19 were AST≥250 IU/L(odds ratio(OR)=64.8,95%confidence interval(CI)7.5–560.3,P<0.0001)and D-dimer≥3500 ng/mL(OR=4.1,95%CI 1.2–13.7,P=0.02).Conclusions Our study confi

Applications of finite element simulation in orthopedic and trauma surgery

Research in different areas of orthopedic and trauma surgery requires a methodology that allows both a more economic approach and the ability to reproduce different situations in an easy way. Simulation models have been introduced recently in bioengineering and could become an essential tool in the study of any physiological unity, regardless of its complexity. The main problem in modeling with finite elements simulation is to achieve an accurate reproduction of the anatomy and a perfect correlation of the different structures, in any region of the human body. Authors have developed a mixed technique, joining the use of a three-dimensional laser scanner Roland Picza captured together with computed tomography(CT) and 3D CT images, to achieve a perfect reproduction of the anatomy. Finite element(FE) simulation lets us know the biomechanical changes that take place after hipprostheses or osteosynthesis implantation and biological responses of bone to biomechanical changes. The simulation models are able to predict changes in bone stress distribution around the implant, so allowing preventing future pathologies. The development of a FE model of lumbar spine is another interesting application of the simulation. The model allows research on the lumbar spine, not only in physiological conditions but also simulating different load conditions, to assess the impact on biomechanics. Different degrees of disc degeneration can also be simulated to determine the impact on adjacent anatomical elements. Finally, FE models may be useful to test different fixation systems, i.e., pedicular screws, interbody devices or rigid fixations compared with the dynamic ones. We have also developed models of lumbar spine and hip joint to predict the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures, based on densitometric determinations and specific biomechanical models, including approaches from damage and fracture mechanics. Colorectal cancer metastases to the thyroid gland:A case report

BACKGROUND Secondary malignancies of the thyroid gland are a rare finding in clinical practice.In addition,colorectal metastasis to the thyroid(CMT)is even more infrequently diagnosed.The source of the primary tumor follows demographic and ethnic patterns,which reflects the most prevalent malignancies in the different populations.Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide;nevertheless,CMT is infrequently diagnosed.Most of them are identified during the follow-up of gastrointestinal primary malignancies.Due to the improvement of image techniques,oncological treatment,and follow-up,survival and consequent diagnosis of metastatic disease are more frequent.Those facts make this entity a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge,due to the lack of information and the difficulties performing clinical trials and research.CASE SUMMARY Here,we present a case report of a patient diagnosed with CMT of adenocarcinoma of the rectum evidenced during follow-up,4 years after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy,who had subsequent curative surgical treatment of the primary tumor and inter-current lung bilateral metastases.CONCLUSION Thyroid metastases of extra-thyroid origin are an uncommon finding,even rarer in cases of CMT.The diagnostic process,as well as survival of oncologic patients is improving,and consequently the number of metastases to the thyroid gland is increasing.

Probability of Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures Assessment Based on DXA Measurements and Finite Element Simulation

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures represent major cause of disability, loss of quality of life and even mortality among the elderly population. Decisions on drug therapy are based on the assessment of risk factors for fracture, from bone mineral density measurements. The combination of biomechanical models with clinical studies could better estimate bone strength and support the specialists in their decision. A model to assess the probability of fracture, based on the Damage and Fracture Mechanics has been developed, evaluating the mechanical magnitudes involved in the fracture process from clinical bone mineral density measurements. The model is intended for simulating the degenerative process in the skeleton, with the consequent lost of bone mass and hence the decrease of its mechanical resistance which enables the fracture due to different traumatisms. Clinical studies were chosen, both in non-treatment conditions and receiving drug therapy, and fitted to specific patients according their actual bone mineral density measures. The predictive model is applied in a finite element simulation of the lumbar spine. The fracture zone would be determined according loading scenario (fall, impact, accidental loads, etc.), using the mechanical properties of bone obtained from the evolutionary model corresponding to the considered time. Bone mineral density evolution in untreated patients and in those under different treatments was analyzed. Evolutionary curves of fracture probability were obtained from the evolution of mechanical damage. The evolutionary curve of the untreated group of patients presented a marked increase of the fracture probability, while the curves of patients under drug treatment showed variable decreased risks, depending on the therapy type. The finite element model allowed obtaining detailed maps of damage and fracture probability, identifying high-risk local zones at vertebral body, which are the usual localization of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Antimicrobial Potential and Phytochemical Content of Six Diverse Sources of Quinoa Seeds (<i>Chenopodium quinoa</i>Willd.)

Antimicrobial potential of quinoa seeds from six diverse seeds, grown in three distinctive geo-graphical zones of Chile, was correlated with their total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total saponin content (TSC). The six seeds were Ancovinto, Cancosa, Cahuil, Faro, Regalona and Villarrica. A significant influence of quinoa source on chemical composition of seeds was observed. Extracts of all quinoa samples showed antimicrobial activity in the range of 8.3 - 14.8 mm inhibition zone for E. coli and 8.5 - 15.0 mm inhibition zone for S. aureus. Cancosa seeds had the highest antimicrobial action. The TPC and TFC ranged from 3.71 to 16.55 mg GA/100 g d.m. and 7.77 to 14.37 mg QE/100 g d.m., respectively. TSC varied from 1.78 to 3.08 g/100 g d.m. A cor-relation between TFC and antimicrobial activity was found. In conclusion, the six types of quinoa seeds were identified as potential sources of antioxidant compounds and antimicrobial activity.
