Lack of association between seroprevalence of Helicobacterpylori infection and primary biliary cirrhosis

AIM:To determine the association between seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori(H pylori)infection and primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC). METHODS:In this case-control study,149 consecutive patients(10 males,139 females,mean age 58.2±11 years, range 26-82 years)suffering from PBC and 619 consecutive healthy volunteer blood donors(523 males,96 females, mean age 47±5.3 years,range 18-65 years)attending the Hospital Blood Bank and residing in the same area were recruited.A commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect anti-H pylori(IgG)antibodies in serum. RESULTS:AnUbodies to Hpyloriwere present in 78(52.3%) out of 149 PBC-patients and in 291(47%)out of 619 volunteers(P=0.24,OR 1.24,95% CI 0.85-1.80).In the subjects less than 60 years old,the prevalence of H pylori infection among PBC-patients(40/79)was slightly higher than in controls(50.6% vs 46.2%)P=0.46,OR=1.19,95% CI:0.72-1.95).In those over 60 years,the prevalence of Hpylori infection was similar between PBC-patients and controls(54.2% vs57.8%,P=0.7,OR 0.86,95% CI 0.36- 2.07). CONCLUSION:There is no association between seroprevalence of H pylori in fection and primary biliary cirrhosis.

The catalytic conversion of methanol to dimethyl ether(DME) over a series of home-made FER-type zeolites having different acidities and commercial γ-Al_2O_3 has been studied with the aim to understand the impact of adding water in the reactant stream on the catalytic behavior on investigated materials. Cofeeding water with methanol, the alcohol conversion was slightly reduced over the investigated zeolites while the catalytic activity of γ-Al_2O_3, the traditional catalyst of MeOH-to-DME conversion, was strongly inhibited. It was also found that, for the investigated zeolites, both the amount and the initial deposition rate of the coke formed during the reaction were reduced when water was co-fed with methanol while no significant effects on both methanol conversion and DME selectivity were observed under the investigated conditions.

Avionics （aeronautics and aerospace） industries must rely on components and systems of demonstrated high reliability. For this, handbook-based methods have been traditionally used to design for reliability, develop test plans, and define maintenance requirements and sustainment logistics, However, these methods have been criticized as flawed and leading to inaccurate and mis- leading results. In its recent report on enhancing defense system reliability, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences has recently discredited these methods, judging the Military Handbook （MIL- HDBK-217） and its progeny as invalid and inaccurate. This paper discusses the issues that arise with the use of handbook-based methods in commercial and military avionics applications. Alter- native approaches to reliability design （and its demonstration） are also discussed, including similarity analysis, testing, physics-of-failure, and data analytics for prognostics and systems health management.

Geomorphological mapping plays a key role in landscape representation: it is the starting point for many applications and for the realization of thematic maps, such as hazard and risk maps, geoheritage and geotourism maps. Traditional geomorphological maps are useful for scientific purposes but they need to be simplified for different aims as management and education. In tourism valorization, mapping of geomorphological resources(i.e., geosites, and geomorphosites), and of geomorphic evidences of past hazardous geomorphological events, is important for increasing knowledge about landscape evolution and active processes, potentially involving geomorphosites and hiking trails. Active geomorphosites, as those widespread in mountain regions, testify the high dynamicity of geomorphic processes and their link with climatic conditions. In the present paper, we propose a method to produce and to update cartographic supports(Geomorphological Boxes)realized starting from a traditional geomorphological survey and mapping. The Geomorphological Boxes are geomorphological representation of single, composed or complex landforms drawn on satellite images, using the official Italian geomorphological legend(ISPRA symbols). Such cartographic representation is also addressed to the analysis(identification, evaluation and selection) of Potential Geomorphosites and Geotrails. The method has been tested in the upper portion of the Loana Valley(Western Italian Alps), located within the borders of the Sesia Val Grande Geopark, recognized by UNESCO in 2013. The area has a good potential for geotourism and for educational purposes. We identified 15 Potential Geomorphosites located along 2 Geotrails; they were ranked according to specific attributes also in relation with a Reference Geomorphosite located in the Loana hydrographic basin and inserted in official national and regional databases of geosites(ISPRA; Regione Piemonte). Mucocele of the appendix is a rare lesion, characterized by distension of the lumen due to accumulation of mucoid substance. This disease is often asymptomatic and pre-operative diagnosis is rare. If untreated, one type of mucocele may rupture producing a potentially fatal entity known as pseudomyxoma peritonei. The type of surgical treatment is related to the dimensions and to histology of the mucocele. Appendectomy is used for simple mucocele or for cystadenoma. Right hemi-colectomy is recommended for cystadenocarcinoma. In this paper, we report a case of a 51-year-old woman with a mobile, painless mass in the right lower quadrant of abdomen caused by a giant appendiceal mucocele. Imaging showed a larger tubular, cystic structure extending below from the inferior wall of the cecum. Surgery revealed a giant retro-cecal appendix measuring 17 cm in length and 4 cm in diameter. The final pathologic diagnosis was mucocele caused by mucinous cystadenoma.

A novel direct measurement strategy of bottom velocities and shear stresses based on the use of ferrofluids is presented. Such a strategy overcomes some of the limits of state-of-the-art instruments. A preliminary experimental campaign has been carried out in the presence of currents in steady flow conditions in order to test the effects of ferrofluid quantity and of the controlling permanent magnetic force. An alternating current （AC） circuit and a direct current （DC） conditioning circuit have been tested. For velocities larger than 0.05 m/s, the near-bottom velocity-output voltage calibration curve has a monotone parabolic shape. The sensitivity of the instrument is increased by a factor of 30 when the DC circuit is used.

Agencies in charge of flood management use disaster reports(DRs)as the preferred source of information on past flooding events.A systematic survey of DRs prepared by Italian agencies suggests that DRs could be widely enhanced in view of targeting more effective communication to citizens,reinforcing the communication pillar in civil protection planning and management,and improving the resilience of the population to extreme *** loss of the rigor and details required for all the usual technical uses of DRs,we suggest recompiling them in the form of"disaster tales"(DTs),as tools that offer wider knowledge of the events to improve people’s preparedness and self-protection *** major flooding events have demonstrated the communication potential that videos and pictures taken by citizens have for risk perception and disaster *** watching and listening to what has happened the communication recipient can better understand the feelings of the people experiencing an *** structure of the improved reports,we suggest,will finally integrate data,graphs,and maps with interactive tools and be able to present handier multimedia views of the *** to three case studies of flooding in Italy illustrates how to concretely implement the suggested disaster reports to create more readily accessible disaster tales.

Background:It is well known that laparoscopic liver surgery can offer advantages over open liver surgery in selected ***,what type of procedures can benefit most from a laparoscopic approach has been investigated poorly thus *** aim of this study is thus to define the extent of advantages of laparoscopic over open liver surgery for lesions in the anterolateral(AL)and posterosuperior(PS)***:In this international multicentre retrospective cohort study,laparoscopic and open minor liver resections for lesions in the AL and PS segments were compared after propensity score *** differential benefit of laparoscopy over open liver surgery,calculated using bootstrap sampling,was compared between AL and PS resections and expressed as a Delta of the ***:After matching,3,040 AL and 2,336 PS resections were compared,encompassing open and laparoscopic procedures in a 1:1 *** and PS laparoscopic liver resections were more advantageous in comparison to open in terms of blood loss,transfusion rate,complications,and length of ***,AL resections benefitted more from laparoscopy than PS in terms of overall and severe complications(D-difference were 4.8%,P=0.046 and 3%,P=0.046)and blood loss(D-difference was 195 mL,P<0.001).Similar results were observed in the subset for high-volume centres,while in recent years no significant differences were found in the differential benefit between AL and PS ***:The advantage of laparoscopic over open liver surgery is greater in the AL segments than in the PS segments.

Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics have expanded rapidly over the past years and represent one of the bases of precision *** application of pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomic approaches and tools for the selection of medications and their dosage to improve patient care is nowadays substantially increased[1,2].Prescription drug information sheets in several therapeutic areas(psychiatric,cardiovascular,analgesic,antiviral,and anticancer drugs)provide current information on pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomic biomarkers for over 200 medicines including mandatory or recommended biomarker testing prior to initiating therapy[3].
