A compositional method to model dependent failure behavior based on PoF models

In this paper, a new method is developed to model dependent failure behavior among failure mechanisms. Unlike the existing methods, the developed method models the root cause of the dependency explicitly, so that a deterministic model, rather than a probabilistic one, can be established. Three steps comprise the developed method. First, physics-of-failure（PoF） models are utilized to model each failure mechanism. Then, interactions among failure mechanisms are modeled as a combination of three basic relations, competition, superposition and coupling. This is the reason why the method is referred to as ＂compositional method＂. Finally, the PoF models and the interaction model are combined to develop a deterministic model of the dependent failure behavior. As a demonstration, the method is applied on an actual spool and the developed failure behavior model is validated by a wear test. The result demonstrates that the compositional method is an effective way to model dependent failure behavior.

Reinforced concrete（RC） buildings in Nepal are constructed with RC frames and masonry infill panels. These structures exhibit a highly non-linear inelastic behavior resulting from the interaction between the panels and frames. This paper presents an extensive case study of existing RC buildings in Nepal. Non-linear analyses were performed on structural models of the buildings considered as a bare frame and with masonry infill, in order to evaluate the influence of infill walls on the failure mechanisms. Five three-storey buildings with different structural configurations and detailing were selected. The effect of masonry infill panels on structural response was delineated by comparing the bare-framed response with the infill response. Seismic performance is evaluated with regard to global strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, inter-storey drift, and total deflection of the structure. A parametric analysis of structures with masonry infill is also performed. For this, the influence of different material properties is studied, namely diagonal compressive stress, modulus of elasticity and tensile stress of masonry infill panels. Study results show that masonry infill increases the global strength and stiffness of the structures; it decreases the inter-storey drift and hence the total displacement of the structure. The results quantify the influence of the infill panels on structural response and, in particular, the effect of the diagonal compressive strength of the masonry wall.

Surgical resection remains the only definitive treatment for colorectal liver metastasis(CRLM). However, only a minority of cases are deemed resectable at the time of diagnosis. Data-driven methods are widely considered for fault diagnosis in complex ***,in practice,the between-class imbalance due to limited faulty samples may deteriorate their classification *** address this issue,synthetic minority methods for enhancing data have been proved to be effective in many *** adversarial networks(GANs),capable of automatic features extraction,can also be adopted for augmenting the faulty ***,the monitoring data of a complex system may include not only continuous signals but also discrete/categorical *** the current GAN methods still have some challenges in handling such heterogeneous monitoring data,a Mixed Dual Discriminator GAN(noted as M-D2GAN)is proposed in this *** order to render the expanded fault samples more aligned with the real situation and improve the accuracy and robustness of the fault diagnosis model,different types of variables are generated in different ways,including floating-point,integer,categorical,and *** effectively considering the class imbalance problem,proper modifications are made to the GAN model,where a normal class discriminator is added.A practical case study concerning the braking system of a high-speed train is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed *** to the classic GAN,the proposed framework achieves better results with respect to F-measure and G-mean metrics.

We investigate experimentally the depositions of two contiguous debris flows flowing into a main river *** aim of the present experimental research is to analyze the geometry and the mutual interactions of debris flow deposits conveyed by these tributaries in the main channel.A set of 19 experiments has been conducted considering three values of the confluence angle,two slopes of the tributary,and three different triggering conditions(debris flows occurring simultaneously in the tributaries,or occurring first either in the upstream or in the downstream tributary).The flow rate along the main channel was always kept *** each experiment the two tributaries had the same slope and confluence *** analysis of the data collected during the experimental tests indicates that the volume of the debris fan is mainly controlled by the slope angle,as expected,while the shape of the debris deposit is strongly influenced by the confluence ***,in the case of multiple debris flows,the deposit shape is sensitive to the triggering *** index for damming formation available in literature has been considered and applied to the present case,and,on the basis of the collected data,considerations about possible extension of such indexes to the case of multiple confluences are finally proposed.

Polycrystalline Si(poly-Si)-based passivating contacts are promising candidates for high-efficiency crystalline Si solar *** show that nanosecond-scale pulsed laser melting(PLM)is an industrially viable technique to fabricate such contacts with precisely controlled dopant concentration profiles that exceed the solid solubility *** demonstrate that conventionally doped,hole-selective poly-Si/SiO_(x)contacts that provide poor surface passivation of c-Si can be replaced with Ga-or B-doped contacts based on non-equilibrium *** overcome the solid solubility limit for both dopants in poly-Si by rapid cooling and recrystallization over a timescale of∼25 *** show an active Ga dopant concentration of∼3×10^(20)cm^(−3)in poly-Si which is six times higher than its solubility limit in c-Si,and a B dopant concentration as high as∼10^(21) cm^(−3).We measure an implied open-circuit voltage of 735 mV for Ga-doped poly-Si/SiO_(x)contacts on Czochralski Si with a low contact resistivity of 35.5±2.4 mΩcm^(2).Scanning spreading resistance microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy show large diffusion and drift current in the p-n junction that contributes to the low contact *** results suggest that PLM can be extended for hyperdoping of other semiconductors with low solubility atoms to enable high-efficiency devices.

Measuring reliability under epistemic uncertainty:Review on non-probabilistic reliability metrics

In this paper, a systematic review of non-probabilistic reliability metrics is conducted to assist the selection of appropriate reliability metrics to model the influence of epistemic uncertainty. Five frequently used non-probabilistic reliability metrics are critically reviewed, i.e., evidence- theory-based reliability metrics, interval-analysis-based reliability metrics, fuzzy-interval-analysis- based reliability metrics, possibility-theory-based reliability metrics （posbist reliability） and uncertainty-theory-based reliability metrics （belief reliability）. It is pointed out that a qualified reli- ability metric that is able to consider the effect of epistemic uncertainty needs to （ 1 ） compensate the conservatism in the estimations of the component-level reliability metrics caused by epistemic uncertainty, and （2） satisfy the duality axiom, otherwise it might lead to paradoxical and confusing results in engineering applications. The five commonly used non-probabilistic reliability metrics are compared in terms of these two properties, and the comparison can serve as a basis for the selection of the appropriate reliability metrics.

Hydrogen Peroxide vapour is becoming more popular to use as a method of decontamination, particularly for medical equipment and enclosures. It is highly effective in terms of microbiological kill rates and has a variety of uses in healthcare. Although it is environmentally acceptable as it spontaneously decomposes into water and oxygen, concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the air needs to be monitored and controlled. A method of calibrating hydrogen peroxide vapor sensors is described which is based on the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in saturated vapour over a solution in water at a defined temperature. The saturated vapour is generated by bubbling dry air into a solution of hydrogen peroxide at a defined concentration and temperature. A vapour at a concentration of 0.7 ppm was produced and used to successfully calibrate a hydrogen peroxide sensor.
