Por.us silica was synthesized via the sol-gel pr.cess using clay obtained locally fr.m Ijer.-Ekiti in Ekiti State, Niger.a and compar.d with silica synthesized under.similar.conditions fr.m sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3) obtained comer. cially. The clay was initially r.fluxed with sodium hydr.xide (NaOH) for.2 hour. to extr.ct SiO2 to for. Na2SiO3, which was subsequently hydr.lyzed to for. a gel. The gel obtained was washed with deionized water.to get r.d of im-pur.ties, dr.ed and calcined at 800°C for.3 hour.. The obtained silica powder. wer. char.cter.zed using atomic absor.-tion spectr.photometer. Four.er.tr.nsfor. infr.r.d (FTIr. spectr.scopy, X-r.y diffr.ction (Xr.) and scanning electr.n micr.scopy (SEM). r.sults showed that the vibr.tional modes and diffr.ction patter.s of the silica der.ved fr.m com-mer.ial Na2SiO3 and that pr.par.d fr.m clay wer. similar.containing pur. amor.hous SiO2. The mor.hology of the commer.ially obtained silica showed better.ar.angement of par.icles and exhibited slightly lesser.por.sity (62.4%) compar.d to that der.ved fr.m clay which had a por.sity of 65.5%. The r.sult indicates that clay has a potential for.use as an envir.nmentally safe and economic star.ing mater.al for.pr.par.ng por.us silica instead of high quality pr.cur.or..

Bioactive glass cer.mic with SiO2-Ca2O-Na2O-P2O5 composition was pr.par.d by the sol-gel method using sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3) as silica sour.e. The monolith obtained was sinter.d at 1000?C for.2 hour. after.which X-r.y diffr.ction (Xr.) analysis showed pr.sence of combeite (Na2Ca2Si3O9) as the cr.stalline phase. In vitr. bioactivity test conducted on the mater.al using simulated body fluid (SBF) showed the for.ation of car.onated hydr.xyapatite on its sur.ace. The mater.al dur.ng the SBF test was obser.ed to tr.nsfor. fr.m a mechanically str.ng cr.stalline phase Na2Ca2Si3O9 to an amor.hous phase after.incubation for.14 days indicating that the mater.al was biodegr.dable. Scanning electr.n micr.scopy (SEM) was used to investigate the sur.ace mor.hology, while Four.er.tr.nsfor. infr.r.d (FTIr. spectr.scopy facilitated the confir.ation of hydr.xyapatite (HA) for.ation. The monolith mater.al obtained may be a good candidate for.application in tissue engineer.ng scaffolds.

Tetr.ethyl or.hosilicate (TEOS) and tr.methyl or.hosilicate (TMOS) alkoxysilanes ar. expensive common pr.cur.or. for.silicate based solgel der.ved bioactive glasses. Facile appr.a- ches involving low cost substitutes ar. a necessity for.bioactive glass implants in bone r.gener.tion ther.py. Quater.ar. SiO2–Na2O–CaO– P2O5 bioactive glass was pr.par.d by the solgel method fr.m locally sour.ed sand as pr.cur.or. The monolith glass mater.al obtained was subjected to immer.ion studies in simulated body fluid (SBF) for.21 days. The sur.ace mor.hology and composition of the glass befor. and after.immer.ion in SBF was studied using SEM-EDX, while pH analysis was used to monitor.changes on the glass sur.ace in SBF solution. FTIr.was used to confir. apatite for.ation on the mater.al. r.sults showed that the concentr.tion of Ca, P and C incr.ased on the sur.ace of the glass sample as immer.ion time incr.ased, which was attr.buted to the for.ation of car.onated hydr.xyapatite (HCA). The mater.al shows ability to bond to bone making it a pr.mising scaffold mater.al for.bone r.pair.

Alkoxysilane pr.cur.or. ar. the most widely used silica sour.e for.sol-gel pr.par.tion of silicate-based bioactive glass. However. due to their.high cost, alter.ative sour.es such as bentonite clay ar. desir.ble. In the pr.sent wor., bentonite clay was r.acted with sodium hydr.xide (NaOH) to extr.ct sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3). The obtained Na2SiO3 was conver.ed to gel which was then sinter.d at 950 ℃ for.3 h to give the bioactive glass in the quater.ar. composition SiO2-NaO-CaO-P2O5. The r.sulting glass was incubated in simulated body fluid (SBF) for.0-7 days to evaluate the bioactivity. Fur.her.or., glass samples wer. char.cter.zed befor. and after.SBF study by scanning electr.n micr.scopy (SEM), ener.y disper.ive X-r.y spectr.scopy (EDX), X-r.y diffr.ction (Xr.), and Four.er.tr.nsfor. infr.r.d spectr.scopy (FTIr.. r.sults obtained showed the pr.sence of Na2Ca2Si3O9 (combeite) cr.stal as the major.cr.stalline phase and the for.ation of hydr.xyapatite (HA) and hydr.xycar.onated apatite (HCA) on the sur.ace of the glass after.immer.ion in SBF. The mater.al showed potentials for.application as scaffold in bone tissue r.pair.
