Effects of Sleep Disorders on Hemoglobin Alc Levels in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Background： Studies have reported the presence of sleep disorders in approximately 50-70% of diabetic patients, and these may contribute to poor glycemic control, diabetic neuropathy, and overnight hypoglycemia. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of sleep disorders in diabetic patients, and to investigate possible relationships between scores of these sleep disorders and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome （OSAS） and diabetic parameters （fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin Alc [HbA lc], and lipid levels）. Methods： We used the Berlin questionnaire （BQ） for OSAS, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale （ESS）, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index （PSQI） to determine the frequency of sleep disorders and their possible relationships with fasting blood glucose, HbA I c, and lipid levels. Results： The study included 585 type 2 diabetic patients admitted to family medicine clinics between October and December 2014. Sleep, sleep quality, and sleep scores were used as the dependent variables in the analysis. The ESS scores showed that 54.40% of patients experienced excessive daytime sleepiness, and according to the PSQI, 64.30% experienced poor-quality sleep. The BQ results indicated that 50.20% of patients were at high-risk of OSAS. HbAlc levels correlated significantly with the ESS and PSQI results （r = 0.23, P 〈 0.001 and r = 0.14, P = 0.001, respectively）, and were significantly higher in those with high-risk of OSAS as defined by the BQ （P 〈 0.001 ）. These results showed that HbAlc levels were related to sleep disorders. Conclusions： Sleep disorders are common in diabetic patients and negatively affect the control of diabetes. Conversely, poor diabetes control is an important factor disturbing sleep quality. Addressing sleep disturbances in patients who have difficulty controlling their blood glucose has dual benefits： Preventing diabetic cornplications caused by sleep disturbance and improving diabetes control.

Choroidal thickness measurements with optical coherence tomography in branch retinal vein occlusion

AIM： To evaluate central macular thickness（CMT） and mean choroidal thickness（MCT） in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion（BRVO）, before and after ranibizumab treatment using spectral domain-optical coherence tomography（SD-OCT）.·METHODS： Forty-two patients with unilateral BRVO and macular edema were included in this study. There were 25 men and 17 women. Using SD-OCT, choroidal thickness was measured at 500 μm intervals up to 1500μm temporal and nasal to the fovea. MCT was calculated based on the average of the 7 locations. All the eyes with BRVO were treated with intravitreal ranibizumab（0.5 mg/0.05 m L）. Comparisons between the BRVO and fellow eyes were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test. Preinjection and post-injection measurements were analyzed using Wilcoxon test and repeated measure analysis.· RESULTS： At baseline, there was a significant difference between the BRVO and fellow eyes in MCT[BRVO eyes 245（165-330） μm, fellow eyes 229（157-327） μm]and CMT [BRVO eyes 463（266-899） μm, fellow eyes 235（148-378） μm（P =0.041, 0.0001, respectively）]. Following treatment, CMT [295（141-558） μm] and MCT [229（157-329） μm] decreased significantly compared to the baseline measurements（P =0.001, 0.006, respectively）.Also BCVA（log MAR） improved significantly（P=0.0001） in the BRVO eyes following treatment. After treatment CMT[BRVO eyes 295（141-558） μm, fellow eyes 234（157-351） μm]and MCT [BRVO eyes 229（157-329） μm, fellow eyes 233（162-286） μm] values did not reveal any significant difference in BRVO eyes and fellow eyes（P=0.051, 0.824,respectively）.· CONCLUSION： In eyes with BRVO, CMT and MCT values are greater than the fellow eyes, and decrease significantly following ranibizumab injection.

In this study,an attempt was made to manufacture an AZ31–Al5005 laminated composite by explosive welding.A mixture of ammonium nitrate(90%),fuel oil(5%),and TNT(5%)was used as the *** detonation velocity of the explosive material was approximately 3100 m•s^(−1).The microstructure and mechanical and corrosion properties of the joint were comparatively *** characterisation of the joint was conducted by optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS),high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HR-TEM),and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The mechanical properties were determined using micro-Vickers hardness,tensile,and Charpy impact *** addition,electrochemical tests were conducted on the AZ31–Al5005 laminated composite and the individual components to determine their corrosion *** corrosion behaviours of the structures were determined in a 3.5%NaCl solution at room temperature using potentiodynamic scanning(PDS).The metallurgical structure and mechanical properties of the joints were within the acceptable limits.

Mechanical properties and microstructure of composites produced by recycling metal chips

In this study, the processing and mechanical properties of porous metal matrix composites(MMCs) composed of spheroidal cast iron chips(GGG40) and bronze chips(CuSn10) and formed by hot isostatic pressing were investigated. Bronze chips(CuSn10) were used as a matrix component, and spheroidal cast iron(GGG40) chips were used as a reinforcement component. The MMCs were produced with different CuSn10 contents(90 wt%, 80 wt%, 70 wt%, and 60 wt%). The hot isostatic pressing process was performed under three different pressures and temperatures. The produced MMCs were characterized using density tests, Brinell hardness tests, and compression tests. In addition, the consolidation mechanism was investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The test results were compared with those for bulk CuSn10 and bulk GGG40. Mechanical tests results revealed that the metallic chips can be recycled by using hot pressing and that the mechanical properties of the produced MMCs were similar to those of bulk CuSn10. XRD and microscopy studies showed that no intermetallic compounds formed between the metallic chips. The results showed that the CuSn10 and GGG40 chips were consolidated by mechanical interlocking.

Determination of the Effects of Safflower Biodiesel and Its Blends with Diesel Fuel on Lubricating Oil in a Single Cylinder Diesel engine

In the present study, safflower biodiesel （safflower oil methyl ester） was produced through transesterification. Biodiesel fuel obtained from safflower was blended with diesel fuel in ratios of 2% （B2） and 20% （B20）. Kinematic viscosity, density, water content, heating value, flash point, clouding point, pour point, ash content, copper strip corrosion and CFPP （cold filter plug point） tests were performed on B2, B20, B100 fuel blends and diesel fuel. A four stroke, single cylinder, water cooled diesel engine with a direct injection fuel system was operated with B2, B20, B100 and diesel fuels at partial load for 100 hours and samples were taken from the engine lubricating oil at certain hours. The wear elements iron, aluminum, lead, copper and chromium contents of the samples taken from the engine lubricating oil were examined.

Effects of fasting and preoperative feeding in children

AIM： To investigate whether children should undergo surgery without a long period of fasting after feeding. METHODS： Eighty children with inguinoscrotal disorders （aged 1-10 years） were studied prospectively. They were divided into eight groups that each contained 10 children who were fed normal liquid food （NLF） and a high-calorie diet （HCD） 2, 3, 4 and 5 h before surgery, in two doses at 6-h intervals. NLF was given to four groups and HCD to the other four. In all groups, glucose, prealbumin and cortisol levels in the blood were measured twice： just after oral feeding and just before the operation. After the establishment of adequate anesthesia, gastric residue liquid was measured with a syringe. RESULTS： Blood glucose levels in all patients fed NLF and HCD were high, except in patients inthe HCD-4 group. There was no significant difference in the blood prealbumin levels. There was a significant increase in the blood cortisol levels in the NLF-2 （14.4± 5.7）, HCD-2 （13.2 ± 6.0）, NLF-3 （10.9± 6.4）, and HCD-5 （6.8 ± 5.7） groups （P 〈 0.05）. The economic value of biofuels has been increasing in the area of energy and in other areas of use due to the increasing energy crisis. The use of ethanol in engines is more common in countries where agricultural crops are abundantly cultivated. Ethanol is a convenient fuel for spark-ignition engines owing to its characteristics and it can be used in engines singly or by blending with gasoline at certain rates. It has been observed that the use of ethanol in motor vehicles results in decreased exhaust emissions of harmful pollutants. In this study,bioethanol produced from sugar beet was used as a blending component. Gasoline-bioethanol blends containing 2% and 5% ethanol by volume were used as fuel in a gasoline engine vehicle and 95 octane gasoline was accepted as the control fuel. As a result of the experiments carried out,it was observed that the use of ethanol resulted in a decrease in CO,CO,HC and NOx emissions and an increase was observed in the value of O emissions in the exhaust.

The genus Paeonia has gained great interest from the scientific community for exploration as a source of bioactive *** current work focused on the chemical characterisation and biological properties of Paeonia mascula *** *** chemical characterisation of the extracts was analysed by LC-DAD-ESI and *** antioxidant,enzyme inhibitory and anticancer properties were evaluated in *** methanol extract was the most effective as antioxidant,metal chelator and was the most effective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase(AChE)and *** chloroform extract showed highest inhibition of butrylcholinesterase(BChE)and *** acetate extract displayed glucosidase *** most abundant compounds were hexagalloyl glucose,penta galloyl glucose,gallic acid,tetragalloyl glucose,paeoniflorin and the most abundant flavonoid was quercetin-3-O-glucoside.β-sitosterol was the most abundant *** anticancer effect of *** was evaluated by using HELA cells evaluating different *** possible inhibition effect of *** on the reactive oxygen species(ROS)pathway was controlled by performing the advanced glycation end product(AGE).To determine the effect of *** on active molecular pathways in the HELA cancer cell line,the levels of Phospho-NF-Kβp65,AGE receptor RAGE protein,antiapoptotic BCL-2,proapoptotic BAX and P-53 proteins were checked,***-NF-Kβp65,RAGE and BCL-2,which are both ROS inducers and play an active role in cancer prognosis,were found to have decreased levels after the application of *** findings provide a scientific basis for Paeonia mascula,which may serve as a source of naturally occurring bioactive compounds for healthpromoting applications.
