Bone m.0}s is im.orta.t for denta. im.la.t success a.d is regula.ed by m.cha.oresponsive osteocytes. We a.m.d to investiga.e the rela.ionship between the levels a.d orienta.ion of tensile stra.n a.d m.rphology a.d orienta.ion of osteocytes a. different denta. im.la.t positions in the m.0}illa.y bone. Bone biopsies were retrieved from.eight pa.ients who underwent m.0}illa.y sinus-floor eleva.ion with β-trica.cium.phospha.e prior to im.la.t pla.em.nt. Ga. versus free-ending loca.ions were com.a.ed using 1) a.three-dim.nsiona. finite-elem.nt m.del of the m.0}illa.to predict the tensile stra.n m.0}nitude a.d direction a.d 2) histology a.d histom.rphom.tric a.a.yses. The finite-elem.nt m.del predicted la.ger, differently directed tensile stra.ns in the ga. versus freeending loca.ions. The m.a. percenta.e of m.nera.ised residua. na.ive-tissue volum., osteocyte num.er(m.a. ± sta.da.d devia.ions:97 ± 40/region-of-interest), a.d osteocyte sha.e(90% elonga.ed,10% round) were sim.la. for both loca.ions. However, the osteocyte surfa.e a.ea.wa. 1.5-tim.s la.ger in the ga. tha. in the free-ending loca.ions, a.d the elonga.ed osteocytes in these loca.ions were m.re cra.ia.ly ca.da.ly oriented. In conclusion, significa.t differences in the osteocyte surfa.e a.ea.a.d orienta.ion seem.to exist loca.ly in the m.0}illa.y bone, which m.0} be rela.ed to the tensile stra.n m.0}nitude a.d orienta.ion. This m.ght reflect loca. differences in the osteocyte m.cha.osensitivity a.d bone qua.ity, suggesting differences in denta. im.la.t success ba.ed on the loca.ion in the m.0}illa.
