General anesthesia with controlled ventilation through endotracheal tube is an anaesthetic technique used by the anesthesiologists all over the world. Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation is necessary to achieve this technique. Traditionally succinylcholine is drug of choice for induction due to its rapid onset of action. Aim: This study compared the efficiency of magnesium sulphate in reducing fasciculation and increase in serum potassium which are the common complications associated with suxamethonium administration. Methods: Fifty six patients being planned for lower abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia were randomized into two groups M and S. Serum potassium was taken in the theatre, three minutes before induction of anesthesia patients in M group were given 6 mg/kg of magnesium sulphate diluted in 10 ml normal saline intravenously while in S group 10 ml of normal saline was injected intravenously. The occurrence and degree of fasciculation were recorded after administration of suxamethonium in both groups while serum potassium was also taken at the end of fasciculations. The researcher was blinded to the content of the syringes until after the study. Results: More patients in the S group had fasciculations compared to the M group while the degree of fasciculations was more in the S group, the serum potassium increase was more in the saline group.

Background:The study is focused on assessing predictors of later life inequality in Nigeria with specificity to the gaps in dimension and ***:The study employed linear mixed multi-level regression analysis to assess predictors of aged inequalities status nested between geo-political zones and *** study utilized the general household Survey-Panel(2018-2019)dataset(n=5527 persons aged≤60).Results:Evidence from the cross-sectional study revealed that aging inequalities are prevalent and persist between geo-political zones(γ00=1.374;p<0.001)and among households(γ00=1.266;p≤0.001).Demographic,social,and economic factors were strong determinants of inequality in the ***:These results show that inequality among older adults in place and space is ***,these dire statistics of unequal inequalities at a later age are a significant problem in ***,an in-depth evaluation of the determined risk factors related to unequal aging and actions for its prevention are warranted.

Objective:To explore and exploit these anti-diabetic properties of the leaf extracts of Dracaena arborea by investigating its therapeutic effects on blood glucose regulation,testicular and endocrine disorders in alloxan(ALX)-induced type-1 diabetic ***:Rats were divided into four groups of five animals each in a completely randomized trial and *** and then Dracaena arborea extracts(DAE)at 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg/day were administered to both normal(Group A)and diabetic rats(Groups C and D)and none to the diabetic control group(Group B)for a period of 8 *** serum level of glucose,follicle stimulating hormone,luteinizing hormone and free testosterone were estimated for all treated and control *** stress parameters such as superoxide dismutase,glutathione peroxidase,glutathione reductase,catalase,and malondialdehyde were also estimated from testicular cells of control,untreated diabetic and DAE-treated diabetic ***:We observed a significant(P<0.05)decrease in the serum glucose level as well as a drug-induced dose-dependent reduction in testosterone,follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone in the rats following type-1 diabetic conditions induction by *** was a significant dose dependent response(P<0.05)to treatment between the DAE-treated diabetic ***,a significant decrease(P<0.05)in oxidative stress parameters was observed in testicular cells of diabetic rats ***:These findings suggest that DAE is a potential beneficial phytotherapeutic agent that may be used in ameliorating hyperglycemic,endocrine and reproductive disorders in type-1 diabetic men.

Introduction: Perioperative management of patients with corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could be extremely challenging in order to keep the balance between providing optimal medical care and protecting health-care providers from the risk of infection. Also the respiratory effect of COVID 19 could also alter the course and outcome of surgery. Aim: We aim to report a 30-year-old COVID-19 patient who had emergency cesarean section on account of placenta praevia. Methodology: The cesarean section was done under subarachnoid block while there was no significant event perioperatively while preventive measures were taken to avoid cross infection with the managing team. Results: The patient had a safe anesthesia and surgery. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test was done fourth day after surgery was negative for the mother and child.

Outcome of Teenage Pregnancy in a Low Resource Setting: A Comparative Study

Background: Teenage pregnancy constitutes a high-risk pregnancy due to possible physical, psychological, socio-economic and increased obstetric risks associated with it. These risks though equally present in the older pregnant women are probably less when compared with teenagers. Thus perinatal outcome of pregnancies in these groups of patients varies. Objective: To compare the socio-demographic characteristics, pattern of pregnancy complications and perinatal outcome of pregnancy among primigravid teenagers and older primigravid women. Method: A comparative study was carried out among 58 primigravid teenagers and equal numbers of adult primigravidae at Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Nigeria over five year period between January 2008 and December, 2012. Their socio-demographic characteristics, booking status, pregnancy complications, estimated gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, post-partum morbidities, neonatal birth weight and perinatal mortalities were obtained from their case notes. Results: Deliveries by teenagers accounted for 2.48% of all deliveries during the period under review. Teenage age was significantly associated with unmarried status (P < 0.001). Two-third (67.2%) of the teenagers were unbooked for antenatal care whereas less than one-quarter of the adult were unbooked. Pregnancy related complications such as, hypertensive diso

The teres minor and infraspinatus muscles bear a close anatomical relationship in the posterior aspect of the scapula and constitute part of the rotator cuff muscles. Although there are only occasional reports of variations of the rotator cuff muscles, this paper reports the first combined occurrence of triple-tailed teres minor and infraspinatus muscle possessing two distinct parts, infraspinatus major and minor which are of clinical and sporting importance. Aberrant variations of rotator cuff muscles need to be brought to the knowledge of radiologists, surgeons and anatomists.

Evaluation of <i>Piper guineense</i>in the Control of Cowpea Storage Weevils: Implication for Sustainable Credit Advancement

The Central Bank of Nigeria Anchored Borrowers Programme efforts geared towards massive production of cowpea and sustainable food security is challenged with post-harvest losses especially due to insect pest infestation in storage. So also, chemical method of pest control posed more health and ecological challenges than food insecurity. This work investigated the effect of Piper guineense on cowpea storage weevil at the agronomy laboratory of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu. Contact toxicity of P. guineense at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1 g per 20 g of cowpea seeds in test tubes including a control was observed. The treatment materials exhibited significant efficacy from 24 hours after infestation. P. guineense at 1 g concentration significantly reduced the oviposition potential, egg hatching rate, holes and emergence of adult Callosobruchus maculatus on treated seeds. The powders caused chronic toxicity and inhibit development. All the responses were found to be concentration dependent. Increasing rates of P. guineense increased performance. The implication of these results is discussed and recommendations proffered.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposited Chromium Doped Zinc Oxide Thin Film for Gas Sensing Applications

Chromium (Cr) doped Zinc oxide ZnO thin films were deposited onto glass substrates by Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) technique with varying dopant concentration at a temperature of 420°C. The effect of the chromium concentration on morphological, structural, optical, electrical and gas sensing properties of the films were investigated. The scanning electron microscopy results revealed that the Cr concentration has great influence on the crystallinity, surface smoothness and grain size. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies shows that films were polycrystalline in nature and grown as a hexagonal wurtzite structure. A direct optical band energy gap of 3.32 to 3.10 eV was obtained from the optical measurements. The transmission was found to decrease with increasing Cr doping concentration. Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) analysis also demonstrates that Cr ions are substitutionally incorporated into ZnO. I-V characteristic of the film shows a resistivity ranges from 1.134 × 10-2 · cm to 1.24 × 10-2 · cm at room temperature. The gas sensing response of the films were enhanced with incorporation of Cr as a dopant with optimum operating temperature around 200°C.
