Equilibrium, Kinetic and Thermodynamics Studies of Adsorption of Aniline Blue from Aqueous Media Using Steam-Activated Carbon Prepared from Delonix regiaPod

The adsorption capacity of steam activated carbon prepared from Delonix regia pods SADRC for adsorption of Aniline Blue (AB) from aqueous solution was investigated under various experimental conditions. Batch study was conducted to assess the potential of the activated carbon for the removal of Aniline Blue from aqueous solution. Activated carbon prepared from Delonix regia pods was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometry before and after adsorption. The FTIR, spectra of SADRC pod before and after Aniline Blue adsorption were compared to study the impact of the Aniline Blue on the activated carbon developed from the Delonix regia pod. The stretching vibration band at 2169.54 cm-1 may be due to strong CN, while the stretching vibration band at around 1580 - 1650 cm-1 may be due to C=C stretching vibration. The bands around 1350 and 426.49 cm-1 are due to C-N and –SO3H group, respectively;this further suggests that some functional groups may be present on the surface of the carbon due to the low temperature of carbonization (300°C) of the adsorbent. Equilibrium isotherm studies were carried out by varying the following four parameters: initial concentration of Aniline Blue dye solution, solution pH and adsorbent dose. The equilibrium data obtained were more fitted to Langmuir than Freundlich isotherm models. The correlation coefficient value (R2) of the pseudo first order kinetics ranged from 0.08 to 0.85 while the R2 of the pseudo second order kinetics ranged from 0.963 to 0.997 at all the temperatures and initial concentrations considered. This suggests that the adsorption kinetics of Aniline Blue onto SADRC can be represented with pseudo second order kinetic model. This study showed that Delonix regia pod could be effectively used as an adsorbent for the removal of Aniline Blue from aqueous solutions over a wide range of concentration and temperature.

Background: Self-cleaning of ears with different objects is a common practice among school children with scanty report in literature. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and profile of self-ear cleaning among school children. Methods: It was a cross-sectional institutional-based study which was carried out among school children in Ekiti, south western Nigeria from January 2017, to March 2017. Results: A total of 174 students participated in this study. Their age ranged between 13 and 17 years. The highest number of participant was found at the age of 15 years. One hundred and eighteen (67.8%) of them had carried out self ear cleaning. Personal hygiene was the commonest reason for self ear cleaning in 28.8% of the students. Cotton buds were mostly used by the respondents in 51.7% of them. Injury to the external auditory canal (EAC) was the most recorded complications. Conclusion: The outcome of this study shows that self-ear cleaning practices were common among school children with a prevalence of 67.8%. Cotton buds were the commonest objects used. Avoidable complications were reported among respondents. There is a need to intensify efforts on public enlightenment programme and the establishment of school health programme in our various schools.

Pentazocine Abuse in Two Siblings with Sickle Cell Anaemia

Vaso-occlusive crisis is a common clinical manifestation in children with sickle cell anaemia, frequently warranting in-patient management with intravenous fluids, analgesics and occasionally anti-malaria and antibiotics. Pain is the principal symptom of vaso-occlusive crisis and it can affect any part of the body. Pentazocine is a well-known opioid analgesic, commonly used in the treatment of painful crisis in children affected by sickle cell anaemia. It was discovered in the 1950s and was initially thought to be addiction—proof, but this has been disproved over the years by reports of pentazocine dependence/addiction especially in patients living with chronic pain. There have been some case reports of pentazocine abuse/dependence among sickle cell disease patients in the literature, most of which are from Nigeria but none involved joint addiction by siblings. We therefore, report the case of two siblings, known sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) patients, referred to our emergency paediatric unit with history of recurrent painful crisis over a 10-month period leading to abuse of pentazocine. They were jointly managed successfully by the paediatric hematology and the pain and palliative units of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and helped to overcome their abuse and addiction.

The field experiment was conducted in the Department of Botany, University of Ibadan, Nigeria between September to December 2012. Four accessions of pepper (Capsicum spp.), obtained from Moor plantation in Ibadan and LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) vegetable garden, Idi-Araba Lagos were evaluated to investigate the morpho-agronomic variability and interaction of accession × treatment × days after transplant in treatment combinations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (Glomus clarum) and cowdung. The experiment was a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The combined analysis of variance showed significant accession, treatment, days after transplant, and accession × treatment interactive effect for most of the growth characters at P 0.01 and P 0.05. The result also showed significant difference in yield related traits of fruits for pepper accessions. The number of leaves per plant was significant and positively associated with plant height (r = 0.516;P 0.05), and highly significant and positively correlated with the number of branches (r = 0.836;P 0.01), but negative and non-significantly related with stem girth. Glomus clarum treated plants responded significantly with higher growth and yield. It suggested that G. clarum treatment had higher potential in influencing crop yield compared to cowdung and untreated plants. This study further explored the relationship between G.

Background:The current pandemic of coronavirus disease(COVID-19)caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has shown epidemiological and clinical characteristics that appear worsened in hypertensive *** morbidity and mortality of the disease among hypertensive patients in Africa have yet to be well ***:In this retrospective cohort study all confirmed COVID-19 adult patients(≥18 years of age)in Lagos between February 27 to July 62,020 were ***,clinical and outcome data were extracted from electronic medical records of patients admitted at the COVID-19 isolation centers in *** included dying,being discharged after recovery or being evacuated/*** statistics considered proportions,means and *** Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used in determining associations between ***–Meier survival analysis and Cox regression were performed to quantify the risk of worse outcomes among hypertensives with COVID-19 and adjust for confounders.P-value≤0.05 was considered statistically ***:A total of 2075 adults with COVID-19 were included in this *** prevalence of hypertension,the most common comorbidity,was 17.8%followed by diabetes(7.2%)and asthma(2.0%).Overall mortality was 4.2%while mortality among the hypertensives was 13.7%.Severe symptoms and mortality were significantly higher among the hypertensives and survival rates were significantly lowered by the presence of additional comorbidity to 50%from 91%for those with hypertension alone and from 98%for all other patients(P<0.001).After adjustment for confounders(age and sex),severe COVID-19and death were higher for hypertensives{severe/critical illness:HR=2.41,P=0.001,95%CI=1.4–4.0,death:HR=2.30,P=0.001,95%CI=1.2–4.6,for those with hypertension only}{severe/critical illness:HR=3.76,P=0.001,95%CI=2.1–6.4,death:crude HR=6.63,P=0.001,95%CI=3.4–1.6,for those with additional comorbidities

Nigeria is an Afrotropical region with considerable ecological heterogeneity and levels of biotic *** its vertebrate fauna,reptiles have broad distributions,thus,they constitute a compelling system for assessing the impact of ecological variation and geographic isolation on species *** red-headed rock agama,Agama agama,lives in a wide range of habitats and,thus,it may show genetic structuring and ***,we tested the hypothesis that ecology affects its genetic structure and population *** inference phylogenetic analysis of a mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)gene recovered four well-supported matrilines with strong evidence of genetic structuring consistent with eco-geographic *** differences among populations based on the mtDNA also correlated with geographic distance. The ecologicalniche model for the matrilines had a good fit and robust performance. Population divergence alongthe environmental axes was associated with climatic conditions, and temperature ranked highestamong all environmental variables for forest specialists, while precipitation ranked highest for theforest/derived savanna, and savanna specialists. Our results cannot reject the hypothesis that nicheconservatism promotes geographic isolation of the western populations of Nigerian A. ***, ecological gradients and geographic isolation impact the genetic structure and population divergenceof the lizards. This species might be facing threats due to recent habitat fragmentation,especially in western Nigeria. Conservation actions appear necessary.

Dyslipidemia is a disorder where abnormally lipid concentrations circulate in the bloodstream. The disorder is common in type 2 diabetics (T2D) and is linked with T2D comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular disease. Dyslipidemia in T2D is typically characterized by elevated plasma triglyceride and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. There is a significant gap in the literature regarding dyslipidemia in rural parts of Africa, where lipid profiles may not be captured through routine surveillance. This study aimed to characterize the prevalence and demo-graphic profile of dyslipidemia in T2D in the rural community of Ganadougou, Mali. We performed a cross-sectional study of 104 subjects with T2D in Ganadougou between November 2021 and March 2022. Demographic and lipid profiles were collected through cross-sectional surveys and serological analyses. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia in T2D patients was 87.5% (91/104), which did not differ by sex (P = .368). High low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was the most common lipid abnormality (78.9%, [82/104]). Dyslipidemia was associated with age and hypertension status (P = .013 and.036, respectively). High total and high LDL-C parameters were significantly associated with hypertension (P = .029 and .006, respectively). In low-resource settings such as rural Mali, there is a critical need to improve infrastructure for routine dyslipidemia screening to guide its prevention and intervention approaches. The high rates of dyslipidemia observed in Gandadougou, consistent with concomitant increases in cardiovascular diseases in Africa suggest that lipid profile assessments should be incorporated into routine medical care for T2D patients in African rural settings.
