The Benue Trough Basin (BTB) of Nigeria is geologically and geo-morphologically subdivided into upper,middle, and lower segments. The BTB is the subject of geological research due to its rich coal depositsthat have the potential for oil and gas. The purpose of the present study is to examine the origins,depositional environments, and thermal history of the selected coals and the processes that influencetheir quality. Coal samples from different open cast coal mines in the middle BTB were examined usingproximate and ultimate, x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray fluorescence (XRF), laser ablation induced coupledplasma (LA-ICPMS), and petrographical analyses. The coal samples contained mainly quartz, kaolinite,and organic carbon. The XRD spectra peaks revealed the triclinic and monoclinic structure of kaolin. TheSiO2/Al2O3 ratios confirmed the dominance of quartz and kaolinite. The Ni/Co versus V/Cr, Cu/Zn, and V/Mo values in the studied coals suggest oxic depositional environments, whereas the V/(Ni þ V) and V/(V þ Cr) values indicate oxic to suboxic conditions. The Ce/Ce* values are slightly below 1, which indicates a suboxic depositional environment. Maceral texture is indicative of transformations from subbituminous to high volatile C or B bituminous coal. The maceral components and mineral matter(10%) of the studied coals imply deposition in the planar margin mire, and a river system of planarmargin mire environments, respectively. The high gelification index (GI) and tissue preservation index(TPI) values indicate peat accumulation developed within a wet forest swamp. The ternary diagram ofthe maceral component suggests deposition in a wet moor environment with intermittent moderate tohigh flooding episodes. The studied coals are sub-hydrous vitrinite inferring hydrogen-poor and thermally immature characteristics. 针对餐厨垃圾生物处理过程中产生的有机废物,为了实现餐厨垃圾的资源化利用,使用热重分析仪对其典型组分:塑料、骨头及难降解生物质,进行了单独及混合热重(TG)特性研究。结果表明:难降解生物质(BRB)、骨头等生物质类物质失重温度较低,最大失重率温度分别为325和341℃,塑料的失重温度较高,最大失重率温度在475℃;通过对混合物料的热重曲线和动力学分析,在较低温度(400℃)状态下,二者在热解过程中有协同作用;含有3种组分的实际物料在166~361℃条件下热解过程符合二维相界反应(函数为2(1-α)1/2);而在361~550℃热解符合三级动力学反应(函数为(1-α)3),在整个温度阶段(166~550℃)中的实际活化能低于模拟活化能(59.69<86.57 k J·mol-1),表明3种物料混合热解有协同作用。

Impact of Mechanization on Lowland Rice Production in Nigeria

The study examined the impact of using power tiller as a means of mechanizing lowland rice production in Nigeria. The study was carried out in Bida area, Niger State, where the sawah rice production was disseminated by Watershed Initiative in Nigeria （WIN）. And in Ajase Ipo of Kwara State, some of the parameters assessed during the study included average speed of operation, average wheel slip/travel reduction, average draught of implement, and fuel consumption. The cost of operation and yield over five years of usage at Niger State and two years in Kwara State was determined and it was therefore concluded that the power tiller is the most appropriate field machinery for tillage operations such as puddling, leveling on lowland rice production in Nigeria.

The erratic supply of electricity in Nigeria has renewed interest in the utilisation of coal for energy selfsufficiency and diversification of the national energy *** this study,selected coal samples from three regions of the Benue Trough Basin were examined through pore water chemistry,X-ray diffraction(XRD),and thermosgravimetric analysis(TGA).The low pH observed for the Lower Benue Trough(LBT)coals indicates the release of sulphur and acids during *** analyses reveal quartz,kaolinite,montmorillonite,albite,pyrite,gypsum and sodium chlorate in the coal *** genetic kaolinite species identified in Imeagha(IMG)coal are detrital kaolinite and the highly crystalline neomorphic *** and jarosite minerals occurred in minor quantities in Garin Maiganga(GMG),whereas significant amount of pyrite was detected in Enugu(ENG)*** thermal degradation resulted in the residual mass(RM)ranging between 4.35%and 56.96%and mass losses(ML)between 43.04%and 95.65%due to the drying,devolatilization,and coke formation in the *** most reactive coal examined was GMG coal,whereas the least reactive was IMG ***(LMZ),GMG,and OKB coals are suited for electricity generation,whereas ENG and IMG coals can be utilised for cement production.

Investigation of the Efficacy of Home-Based Oral Chloroquine Treatment among Under-Five Children with Plasmodium falciparum Malaria in Some Parts of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

Background: Nigeria is currently a malaria endemic country with an estimated 76% of her population at risk of contracting malaria [1]. According to a study in Nigeria, the first line of action mothers took when their children under 5 years have malaria showed that over 50% of them used non-prescription drugs they have at home or bought from pharmacy stores. And 60% of the most commonly used drugs for malaria treatment were chloroquine [2]. Many recent studies have demonstrated re-emergence of chloroquine-sensitive P. falciparum, suggesting a possible role in future malaria control [3]. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of home-based oral chloroquine treatment among children under 5 years with Plasmodium falciparum malaria attending Jos University Teaching Hospital and OLA Hospital in Jos Metropolis. Method: This is a cross-sectional study of 93 malaria and non-malaria children. Malaria diagnosis was carried out using microscopical examination of Leishman’s stained thick and thin blood films, P. falciparum parasitemia was assessed by standard microscopy techniques and complete blood count was done using Beckman Coulter Analyzer. Results: The body temperature on admission was significantly lower (p ˚C ± 0.07˚C) than in the three malaria groups. The mean body temperature of chloroquine treated children with malaria was significantly lower (p Conclusion: The results obtained in this study demonstrate that there was significant positive impact of chloroquine treatment on Plasmodium falciparum parasitemia and degree of anemia in children under 5 years with Plasmodium falciparum in Jos Metropolis.

Three solvents of different polarities(water,methanol and 1%NaOH solution)were used to extract dyes that produced different shades from dried sunflower(Helianthus annuus)*** extraction procedures using different solvent types were carried out *** dye extracts were thereafter subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry(FT-IR)analysis for characterization in terms of functional *** intensities of the extracted dyes on the shade of colours obtained on pieces of cotton material varied from yellow in methanolic extract to light yellow in aqueous and black in 1%NaOH solution *** results obtained from the FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of several useful functional groups such as N-H,C=H,O-H and C=O in the extracts.

Adsorption of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution Using Steam-Activated Carbon Produced from <i>Lantana camara</i>Stem

This study investigated the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) present in wastewater onto the activated carbon produce from Lantana camara stem. The agricultural material (Lantana camara stem) was carbonized at 300°C for 2 h, ground and steam-activated. The Steam-Activated Lantana camara (SALC) stem carbon was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometry before and after adsorption. Batch model experiments were conducted at 20°C to study the effects of pH, agitation time, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration of methylene blue. The equilibrium adsorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated. The FTIR bands at 3500, 2500, 2196 and 1682 cm-1 were shifted to 3646.3, 3030, 2822, 1709.05 cm-1 after MB adsorption. Similarly, the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the average pore size on the activated carbon was 20 μm. The Methylene Blue (MB) uptake increased with the increase in pH. Similarly, the dye adsorption increased as contact time increased, and reached equilibrium at 60 minutes. The removal of the dye increased when the dosage was increased from 0.5 - 2.0 g·L-1, at different dye concentrations (50 - 200 mg·L-1). The percentage removal decreased with increasing initial dye concentration for SALC. The adsorption isotherm data fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.989) while the experimental data fitted very well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.99). This study suggests that adsorbent prepared from Lantana camara stem can be used effectively for the adsorption of methylene blue in wastewater.

Africa is a developing economy and as such, emphasis has been placed on the achievement of revolutionary goals that will place her on a similar rank as the developed economies. Pertaining to this objective, Heads of States and government all over Africa instigated the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063, which is a framework put in place to achieve a continental transformation over the next 40 years. The use of satellites has been proven to be a major influence on economic growth since it facilitates the exchange of information. Environmental hazards such as climate changes, pollution, and inefficient waste management can be classified as one of the drawbacks to achieving this economic growth we hope to accomplish. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and examine satellite communication as a tool for the attainment of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa by means of combatting environmental hazards in the continent.
