Impact of smoking on nasal mucociliary clearance time in Kano metropolis,Nigeria

Background:Mucociliary clearance is an important defense mechanism in human upper and lower respiratory airways.Impairment of this process by certain conditions such as cigarette smoking can predispose to chronic infection and neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses.Methods:This was a cross-sectional study conducted in Kano metropolis,Nigeria.Eligible adults were enrolled,a saccharine test was conducted,and the nasal mucociliary clearance time was assessed.Analysis of the result was carried out using statistical Product and service solutions version 23.0.Results:There were 225 participants categorized into 75 active smokers(33.3%),74 passive smokers(32.9%),and 76 nonsmokers(33.8%,living in a smoking-free zone).The age range of the participants was between 18 and 50 years,with a mean age of(31.2±5.6)years.All participants were males.There were 139(61.8%)of Hausa-Fulani ethnic group,24(10.7%)Yoruba,18(8.0%)Igbo,and 44(19.5%)other ethnic groups.Findings in this study showed that the average mucociliary clearance time among active smokers was prolonged([15.25±6.20]min)compared to passive([11.41±4.25]min)and nonsmokers([9.17±2.76]min)respectively,with a statistical significance(F=33.59,Pstic regression revealed that the number of cigarettes smoked per day was an independent predictor of prolonged mucociliary clearance time(P=0.008,odds ratio=0.44,95%confidence interval=0.24–0.80).Conclusion:Active cigarette smoking is associated with prolonged nasal mucociliary clearance time.The number of cigarette sticks smoked per day was found to be an independent predictor of prolonged mucociliary clearance time.

In Ivory Coast,beekeeping takes an important place among the major economic activities.It contributes to improv-ing the population’s livelihoods thanks to its derived products which are honey,propolis,wax and royal jelly.How-ever,the installation of honey bee hives could put pressure on wild bee species,which often live solitary.However,these wild bees are excellent pollinators of cultivated and wild plants.The study aimed to assess the effect of honey bee hives on the diversity of wild bees.The methodology approach consisted of capturing bees in three different plots inside the forest fragment of the botanical garden located at the University Peleforo Gon Coulibaly.The first plot was chosen approximately from 10 m to an apiary containing ten hives.The two other plots were chosen to be 200 m and 400 m from the apiary,respectively.Bees were captured once a month for three months using pan traps(UV—blue,yellow and white).A total of 17 bee species belonging to three families(Apidae,Megachilidae and Halictidae)were identified.The furthest plot from the apiary was the most diverse(H’=2.49)and that near the apiary was the least diverse(H’=0.11).Only,two wild bee species,Hypotrigona sp.and Thrinchostoma petersi,persisted inside the plot nearby the apiary where honey bees were most abundant.The furthest plots from the apiary seem to have the highest diversity of wild bees.These findings are very relevant because they can be used for the policies of conservation of wild bees and the management of beekeeping activities.

High Energy X-Ray Dosimetry Using(ZnO)_(0.2)(TeO_(2))_(0.8)Thin Film-based Real-time X-Ray sensor

This study reports the dosimetric response of a(ZnO)_(0.2)(TeO_(2))_(0.8)thin film sensor irradiated with high-energy X-ray radiation at various doses.The spray pyrolysis method was used for the film deposition on soda-lime glass substrate using zinc acetate dehydrate and tellurium dioxide powder as the starting precursors.The structural and morphological properties of the film were determined.The I-V characteristics measurements were performed during irradiation with a 6 MV X-ray beam from a Linac.The results revealed that the XRD pattern of the As-deposited thin film is non-crystalline(amorphous)in nature.The FEsEM image shows the non-uniform shape of nanoparticles agglomerated separately,and the EDX spectrum shows the presence of Te,Zn,and O in the film.The I-V characteristics measurements indicate that the current density increases linearly with X-ray doses(0-250 cGy)for all applied voltages(1-6 V).The sensitivity of the thin film sensor has been found to be in the range of 0.37-0.94 mA/cm^(2)/Gy.The current-voltage measurement test for fading normalised in percentage to day 0 was found in the order of day 0>day 15>day 30>day 1>day 2.These results are expected to be beneficial for fabricating cheap and practical X-ray sensors.

Cardio-Renal syndrome: Frequency and Associated Factors in the Abidjan Heart Institute’s Medical Department

Introduction: Cardio-renal syndrome (CRs) is a pathophysiological disorder of the heart and kidneys in which acute or chronic dysfunction of one organ can lead to acute or chronic dysfunction of the other. In Africa, particularly in C?te d’Ivoire, the incidence of cardio-renal syndrome is not precisely known. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of CRs and to contribute to a better understanding of the condition in the medical department of the Abidjan Heart Institute. Materials and Methods: We conducted a prospective analytical study including all patients with heart failure hospitalised in the medicine department of the Abidjan Heart Institute from March to October 2020. Data were analysed using sPss software version 22. Results: We included 111 patients in the study. The incidence of CRs was 64%, with a predominance of males (sex ratio 1.8). The mean age was 53 ± 15 years. Patients’ medical history was dominated by hypertension (56.8%), diabetes (15%), dyslipidaemia (18%), obesity (17.1%) and smoking (14.4%). The main causes of heart failure were dilated cardiomyopathy (22.8%) and ischaemic heart disease (21.4%). symptomatology was mainly congestive heart failure (42.8%). Mean evaluated clearance (MDRD) was 39.9 ± 17.1 ml/min/msup>2sup>. Doppler echocardiography showed a decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction in 74.3% of patients. Factors statistically associated with the occurrence of cardio-renal syndrome were: age > 60 years (p = 0.04), diabetes (p = 0.03), arterial hypertension (p = 0.001) and Hb Conclusion: The cardio-renal syndrome is a reality and marks an important point in the evolution of cardiac and renal diseases. It is highly frequent in the medical department of the Abidjan Heart Institute, as well as a high rate of CKD.

Acceptable glycemic control when examining the effects of meals was span>span>span>span>span style="font-family:"">achieved when combining basal insulin therapy and high concentration insulin injection before a meal, when using a PID controller (Proportionality, Integrity and Derivative actions) alone, when using a PID controller with basal insulin therapy and when combining the three methods of insulin delivery. Naturally, a type 1 diabetic must inject himself with insulin in well-measured doses. Thus, the management and control of diabetes become a complex task when one must be considered the disturbance due to nutrition and sports activity. This concern has been at the center of much research through different approaches through mathematical methods and Artificial Intelligence methods. This article simulates a physiological model of glycemic control in type 1 diabetics by a PID regulatory mechanism, in the context of disturbances caused by the patient’s meals and athletic activity.

The immobilization of soil contaminants (as one of the regulating ecosystem services) playspan>s very important role in environment. This regulatory service prevents groundwater contamination and the entry of contaminants into the food chain. The evaluation as well as the spatial distribution of this regulatory service is important for optimal land management in a specific region. Mapping system combining input layers—slope topography, soil texture, climate region and land use (arable land, grassland)—were created for the analysis and the evaluation of potential of agroecosystem services. Filtering potential was calculated as accumulative function of soil sorption potential and potential of total content of inorganic pollutants evaluated according to The Slovak Soil Law. Calculated potential was categorised into five categories: very low, low, medium, high and very high. Four model areas were selected for the analysis of pollutant filtration, as one of the regulatory agroecosystem services, which are located in different climatic areas and different soil-ecological conditions of slovakia. The greatest differences among model regions can be found in relation to climatic conditions, land use and diversity of soil types. The warm, dry, and lowland region has a higher potential for pollutant filtration than the moderately warm or cold region.
