A particulate-harden.d composite usually kn.wn.as cermets with alumin.m matrix an. rein.orced with ceramic particles from broken.bottles was used to in.estigate the effect of agein. time on.hardn.ss an. ten.ile stren.th. The samples used for the work were produced usin. stir-cast method an. the samples were cast in.metal moulds to improve on.the surface fin.sh an. to obtain.good coolin. rate. The composite composition.used was Al/0.5% glass particles. The samples were treated at 500?C an. quen.hed in.water at 65?C. They were then.aged at various temperatures ran.in. from 150?C - 210?C. The result of the hardn.ss test showed that within.the ran.e of the agein. time selected the hardn.ss in.reased with the agein. for all the agein. temperatures used. Variation. were observed but this is n.rmal in.agein., particularly when.coheren. an. in.oheren. precipitates are formed at a poin. in.time, or when.over-agein. occurs. The plot of the ten.ile stren.th tests an. the hardn.ss tests, with agein. time showed the tren. as observed. The highest hardn.ss value of 37.3 HRB occurred after 5 hours of agein. likewise the highest ten.ile stren.th value of 398.36 n.mm2 occurred after 5 hours of agein. at the same agein. temperature of 190?C. The aged composite showed improved hardn.ss an. ten.ile stren.th when.compared to as-cast value of 23.7 HRB for hardn.ss an. 253.12 n.mm2 for ten.ile stren.th respectively.

River Iyiuden. is a vital distributary resource in.Abakaliki, southeastern.n.geria an. con.eys an.abun.an. amoun. of sedimen.s to provin.ial an. residual ecosystems. Although the importan.e of the river can.ot be overemphasized, the geochemistry of its stream sedimen.s is less in.estigated. Twen.y (20) stream sedimen. samples were taken.at the cen.re of the river chan.els to represen. the en.ire drain.ge area well an. avoid collapsed ban. materials. The stream sedimen. samples were used to determin. the dispersion. con.amin.tion.status an. sources of heavy metal con.en.ration.. Total elemen.al digestion.accompan.ed this with the use of aqua regia, an.admixture of Hydrochloric acid (HCl) an. n.tric acid (Hn.3) in.the ratio of 3:1 usin. the atomic absorption.spectrometer (AAS). The heavy metal con.en.ration.levels in.River Iyiuden. were low compared with sedimen.s from Imo River, Gulf of Californ.a, Upper con.in.n.al crust, Average shale an. surface horizon., excludin. Cd, which showed high con.en.ration.levels than.the other referen.e studies. The results delin.ated a wide con.rast in.the con.en.ration.levels of the heavy metals, with the mean.con.en.s in.the order Zn.> Cu > Pb > Cd > n. > As. The pollution.evaluation.utilizin. the Effect ran.e low (ERL), Effect ran.e median.(ERM), sin.le pollution.in.ex, an. geo-accumulation.in.ex revealed Cd con.amin.tion. Season.l variability of dissolved an. particulate methylmercury（F-MeHg, P-MeHg） con.en.ration. was studied in.the waters of the Amazon.River an. its associated Curuai floodplain.durin. hydrological year 2005–2006, to un.erstan. the MeHg exchan.es between.these aquatic systems. In.the oxic white water lakes, with n.utral pH, high F-MeHg an. P-MeHg con.en.ration. were measured durin. the risin. water stage（0.70 ± 0.37 pmol/L, n.= 26） an. flood peak（14.19 ± 9.32 pmol/g, n.= 7） respectively, when.the Amazon.River water discharge in.o the lakes was at its maximum. The lowest mean.values were reported durin. the dry season.0.18 ± 0.07 pmol/L F-MeHg, n.= 10 an. 1.35 ± 1.24 pmol/g P-MeHg, n.= 8）, when.water an. suspen.ed sedimen.s were outflowin. from the lakes in.o the River. In.these lakes,the MeHg con.en.ration. were associated to the alumin.um an. organ.c carbon.n.trogen.chan.es. In.the black water lakes, with acidic pH an. reducin. con.ition., elevated MeHg con.en.ration. were recorded（0.58 ± 0.32 pmol/L F-MeHg, n.= 16 an. 19.82 ± 15.13 pmol/g PMeHg, n.= 6）, an. correlated with the organ.c carbon.an. man.an.se con.en.ration.. Elevated values of MeHg partition.coefficien.（4.87 〈 Kd〈 5.08 log（L/kg） in.icate that MeHg is main.y tran.ported associated with the particulate phase. The P-MeHg en.ichmen. detected in.all lakes suggests autochthon.us MeHg in.uts from the sedimen.s in.o the water column. The MeHg mass balan.e showed that the Curuai floodplain.is n.t the source of P-MeHg for the Amazon.River.

In.ectious diarrhea is a major cause of in.an. mortality in.most developin. coun.ries. In.this research, we evaluated the poten.ial of immobilized Lactobacillus plan.arum n.IMB 8826 on.wean.mix in.an. cereal an. its effectiven.ss in.reducin. the severity of Citrobacter roden.ium-in.uced diarrhea in.wean.in. mice. Thirty-six C57BL/6 wean.in. mice were placed in.o four groups (n.= 9 each;n.gative, positive, preven.ion.an. cure). Mice received either L. plan.arum (109 CFU/g) immobilized on.wean.mix in.an. cereal 3 days before C. roden.ium (109 CFU/ ml) in.ection.(Preven.ion. or 3 days after C. roden.ium in.ection.(Cure). A positive con.rol group was in.ected with C. roden.ium on.y, while a n.ga-tive con.rol group received n.ither L. plan.arum n.r C. roden.ium. Positive con.rol mice showed colon.c mucosal an. submucosal in.lammation. erosion. an. mucosal epithelia hyperplasia with the C. roden.ium in.ection. Mice in.the preven.ion.an. cure groups had less severe histologic alteration. in.the colon. Some ben.ficial effect of L. plan.arum was observed in.cecal short-chain.fatty acid con.en.ration., which stimulates water an. electrolytes absorption.to reduce diarrhea. Our fin.in.s demon.trated that L. plan.arum n.IMB 8826 could be immobilized on.wean.mix in.an. cereal to help reduce diarrhea durin. wean.n..
