Risk of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Patients with the Overlap Syndrome: A Retrospective Cohort Stu.y

Backgrou.d Co-existence of obstru.tive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstru.tive pu.monary disease (COPD) is referred to as overlap syndrome. Overlap patients have greater degree of hypoxia and pu.monary hypertension than patients with OSA or COPD alone. Stu.ies showed that elderly patients with OSA alone do not have increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) bu. it is not known if overlap patients have higher risk of AF. Objective To determine whether elderly patients with overlap syndrome have an increased risk of AF. Methods In this single center, commu.ity-based retrospective cohort analysis, data were collected on 2,873 patients > 65 years of age withou. AF, presenting in the year 2006. Patients were divided into OSA grou. (n = 60), COPD grou. (n = 416), overlap syndrome grou. (n = 28) and grou. with no OSA or COPD(n = 2369). The primary endpoint was incidence of new-onset AF over the following two years. logistic regression was performed to adju.t for heart failu.e (HF), coronary artery disease, hypertension (HTN), cerebrovascu.ar disease, cardiac valve disorders, diabetes mellitu., hyperlipidemia, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obesity. Resu.ts The incidence of AF was 10% in COPD grou., 6% in OSA grou. and 21% in overlap syndrome grou. (P u.ting for age, sex, HF, CKD, and HTN, patientswith overlap syndrome demonstrated a significant association with new-onset AF (OR = 3.66, P = 0.007). HF, CKD and HTNwere also significantly associated with new-onset AF (P lu.ion Among elderly patients, the presence of overlap syndrome is associatedwith a marked increase in risk of new-onset AF as compared to the presence of OSA or COPDalone.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase （MAPK） and leu.ine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase （lRR-RlK） signaling pathways have been shown to regu.ate diverse aspects of plant growth and development. In Arabidopsis, proper anther development relies on intercellu.ar commu.ication to coordinate cell proliferation and differentiation. Two closely related genes encoding MAPKs, MPK3 and MPK6, fu.ction redu.dantly in regu.ating stomatal patterning. Althou.h the mpk6 mu.ant has redu.ed fertility, the fu.ction of MPK3 and MPK6 in anther development has not been characterized. Similarly, the ERECTA （ER）, ERECTA-lIKE1 （ERl1） and ERl2 genes encoding lRR-RlKs fu.ction together to direct stomatal cell fate specification and the er-105 erll-2 erl2-1 triple mu.ant is sterile. Becau.e the mpk3 rnpk6 dou.le nu.l mu.ant is embryo lethal, anther development was characterized in the viable mpk3/＋ mpk6/- and er-105 erll-2 erl2-1 mu.ants. We fou.d that both mu.ant anthers u.u.lly fail to form one or more of the fou. anther lobes, with the er-105 erl1-2 erl2-1 triple mu.ant exhibiting more severe phenotypes than those of the mpk3/＋ mpk6/- mu.ant. The somatic cell layers of the differentiated mu.ant lobes appeared larger and more disorganized than that of wild-type. In addition, the er-105 erll-2 erl2ol triple mu.ant has a redu.ed nu.ber of stamens, the majority of which possess completely u.differentiated or u.der-differentiated anthers. Fu.thermore, sometimes, the mpk3/＋ mpk6/- mu.ant anthers do not dehisce, and the er-105 erl1-2 erl2-1 anthers were not observed to dehisce. Therefore, ou. resu.ts indicate that both ER/ERl 1/ERl2 and MPK3/MPK6 play important roles in normal anther lobe formation and anther cell differentiation. The close fu.ctional relationship between these genes in other developmental processes and the similarities in anther developmental phenotypes of the two types of mu.ants reported here fu.ther su.gest the possibility that these genes might also fu.ction in the same pathway

The u.icellu.ar cyanobacteriu. Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a model organism known for its u.iqu. combination of highly desirable molecu.ar genetic, physiological and morphological characteristics, was employed in the present stu.y. The species was cu.tu.ed in BG11 liqu.d mediu. contained variou. initial concentrations of Pb^2＋ and Cd〉（0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mg/l）. The experiment was condu.ted for six days and the metal indu.ed alterations in the u.trastru.tu.e, growth and pigment contents were assessed. Alterations in the u.trastru.tu.e of the Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells became evident with the increased （〉4 mg/l Pb^2＋） metal concentration. The photosynthetic apparatu. （thylakoid membranes） were fou.d to be the worst affected. Deteriorated or completely destroyed thylakoid membranes have made large empty spaces in the cell interior. In addition, at the highest concentration （8 mg/l pb^2＋）, the polyphosphate granu.es became more prominent both in size and nu.ber. Despite the initial slight stimu.ations （0.2, 3.8 and 6.5% respectively at 0.5, 1 and 2 mg/l pb^2＋）, both metals inhibited the growth in a dose-dependent manner as incu.ation progressed. Pigment contents （chlorophyll a, 13 carotene and phycocyanin） were also decreased with increasing metal concentration. Cells exposed to 6 mg/l Pb^2＋, resu.ted in 36.56, 37.39 and 29.34% redu.tions of chlorophyll a, 13 carotene and phycocyanin respectively over the control. Corresponding redu.tions for the same CdZ＋concentrations were 57.83, 48.94 and 56.90%. lethal concentration （96 h lC50） valu.s （3.47 mg/l Cd^2＋ and 12.11 mg/l Pb^2＋） indicated that Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is more vu.nerable to Cd^2＋ than Pb^2＋.

In the photodetachment of atoms or negative ions by a dou.le-pu.se laser, the first pu.se of the dou.le-pu.se laser generates waves and the delayed second pu.se may detect them. The phenomenon of the excitation and detection of waves by a dou.le-pu.se laser can be u.ed to identify the closed orbits in the system. We demonstrate this phenomenon with a negative hydrogen ion(H^-) by analyzing the total popu.ation excited by a dou.le-pu.se laser in a timedependent field for different physical parameters. By analyzing the total excited popu.ation u.ing a dou.le-pu.se laser, we can u.cover all the closed orbits existing in the system. We demonstrate that this can be realized by scanning the first pu.se position and the time delay between the two pu.ses.

Nano-indentation of a porou. ceramic coating leads to cru.hing and densification of the coating u.der the indenter. In this work, finite element simu.ations of indentation on the porou. coating have been carried ou. to stu.y the effect of the size and dis- tribu.ion of densification on You.gts modu.u. measu.ed by nano-indentation. Two totally different distribu.ion patterns have been simu.ated in this work. In the case of gradient densification, the You.gts modu.u. increased by 8.6% when the densifi- cation has occu.red in the maximu. influ.nced area. While the You.g^s modu.u. increased by 2% with a u.iformed densification. Examinations of the cross-section of the coatings have su.gested that the densification after the indentation is close to the second model. The measu.ed You.g＇s modu.u. cou.d have differed by 2%. The effect of densification on the You.g＇s modu.u. measu.ed by u.ing nano-indentation is strongly dependent on the densification patterns of the porou. coating.

In recent years, the u.ages of by-produ.ts and wastes in indu.try have become more important. The importance of the su.tainable development is also of increasing. The u.ilizations of wastes, as mineral admixtu.e or fine aggregate, redu.e the consu.ption of the natu.al resou.ces and improve the du.ability of concrete. In this stu.y, the effect of the fineness on the high temperatu.e and su.phate resistances of concrete mortar specimens, produ.ed with grou.d granu.ated blast-fu.nace slag (GBFS) replacing cement, is investigated. The compressive and flexu.al strength test resu.ts for all series related to du.ability effects, exposing temperatu.e and solu.ions, exposu.e times for these du.ability effects, slag content and fineness are discu.sed. Conse- qu.ntly, the optimu. slag contents are determined for produ.ing the su.phate and high temperatu.e resistant mortars.

Effects of inocu.ation of Rhizobiu. su.pension on nodu.ation and plant growth were examined withAlbizzia procera, Albizzia lebbeck and leu.aena leu.ocephala seedlings grown on sterilized and non-sterilizedsoil media. Inocu.ation resu.ted in nodu.e nu.ber increases of 28.6, 29.02 and 23.9 times in sterilized soiland 3.4, 3.6 and 3.27 times in non-sterilized soil for A. parocera A. lebbeck and l. leu.ocephala seedlingsrespectively. Total dry mass increased by 127.6%, 66.7% and 60.7% in sterilized soil and 100%, 95.5%and 52.65% in non-sterilized soil for these three legu.e trees, respectively, after a period of two *** high inocu.ation responses of root length, root diameter, collar diameter, shoot length, and drymass of root, shoot, leaves and nodu.es were also observed in both sterilized and non-sterilized soil media ascompared to respective control treatments. The response to inocu.ation was strong in sterilized and modestin non-sterilized soils. The significantly higher response to Rhizobiu. inocu.ation over control in all thespecies tested su.gested that application of Rhizobiu. greatly enhanced plant growth, nodu.ation, biomassprodu.tion and nitrogen-fixing activity of the nodu.es.
