Com.arison of Oral m.nifestations in Hospitalized COVID-19 Positive Patients and COVID-19 Negative Dental Outpatients. A Case Series Study and Literature Review

Background: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory infectious disease, also nam.d Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrom. Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can cause various system.c m.nifestations that pose a threat to hum.n life. Oral lesions in patients with COVID-19 m.y appear during or after the illness and m.y or m.y not be a consequence of the viral infection. Objective: In this case series we com.are the oral m.nifestations in hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients and COVID-19 negative dental outpatients. m.thods: 60 hospitalized COVID-19 patients and 41 control patients, were exam.ned for oral signs and sym.tom.. The controls were dental patients who visited the hospital for dental care without com.laining of any problem. related to the oral cavity itself. Results: We have observed a strong association between certain clinical findings and COVID-19, including alterations in taste (ageusia, dysgeusia, and hypogeusia), anosm.a, hairy tongue, tongue im.rints, red tongue, erythem.tous candidiasis, pseudom.m.ranous candidiasis, and exfoliative cheilitis. A trend but not statistically significant association at the level of 5% was also noted for colored tongue, linea alba, and pale m.cosa. On the contrary, fissured tongue and oral m.cosa pigm.ntation were m.re frequent in the controls, statistically significant at the level of 5%. Conclusion: COVID-19 has been found to im.act the oral cavity, resulting in various oral lesions that can be attributed to either the direct action of the virus or the patient’s im.une response.

Densification of Reclaim.d Soils with the Utilization of the Vibro Com.action Technique—A Case Study

This paper presents a case study of the extensive soil im.rovem.nt work carried out on a reclam.tion project on the shores of United Arab Em.rates. The project consisted an area of approxim.tely 480,000 m.sup>2 for recreation purposes. Following the dredging work, approxim.tely 6.8 m.llion cubic m.ters underwent densification using the vibrocom.action m.thod. The general aim. of such analysis are to investigate the effectiveness of vibrocom.action as a m.thod of soil im.rovem.nt and appraise the selection of this m.thod as the m.st appropriate soil treatm.nt technique necessary for the adequate densification of the overall loose soil m.sses. The efficiency of the vibrocom.action technique to densify thick granular-based soil form.tions of considerable thickness and the benefits obtained, equated to other soil treatm.nt m.thods, was assessed through a com.rehensive post quality control program.including field and laboratory post-com.action testing. Based on the analysis conducted it is concluded that soil strength of the reclaim.d m.terials achieved a noteworthy im.rovem.nt reaching com.ortably the required degrees of densification.

Com.utational Fluid Dynam.cs (CFD) m.delling to Estim.te Fluvial Bank Erosion—A Case Study

River bank erosion m.dels are an im.ortant prerequisite for understanding the developm.nt of river m.anders and for estim.ting likely land-loss and potential danger to floodplain infrastructure. Although bank erosion m.dels have been developed that consider large-scale m.ss failure, the contribution of fluvial erosion (the process of particle-by-particle erosion due to the shearing action of the river flow) to bank retreat has not received as m.ch consideration. In principle, such fluvial bank erosion rates can be quantified using excess shear stress form.lations, but in practice, it has proven difficult to estim.te the param.ters involved. In this study, a series of three-dim.nsional Com.utational Fluid Dynam.cs (CFD) sim.lations for a m.ander loop on the River Asker (200 m.long) at Bridport in southern England were undertaken to elucidate the overall flow structures and in particular to provide estim.tes of the applied fluid shear stress exerted on the riverbanks. The CFD m.dels, which sim.lated relatively low and relatively high flow conditions, were established using Fluent 6.2 software. The m.delling outcom.s show that the key qualitative features of the flow endure even as flow discharge varies. At bank full, the degrees of velocity and sim.lated shear stresses within the inner bank separation zones are shown to be higher than those observed under low flow conditions, and that these elevated shear stresses m.y be sufficient to result in the rem.val of accum.lated sedim.nts into the m.in downstream.flow.

A Case Study on Soil Im.rovem.nt with Rapid Im.act Com.action (RIC)

Soil treatm.nt was utilized on num.rous production sites to com.act cohesion less form.tions, having the objective to increase earth characteristics and decrease probable subsidence. Within the last few years, Rapid Im.act Com.action (RIC) has increased its attractiveness as a soil treatm.nt m.thod. m.ly:Verdana;">RIC is an innovative dynam.c com.action technique prim.rily used to com.act sandy soils where silt and clay contents are low. This work presents a case study of ground im.rovem.nt using RIC and its suitability for site preparation earthworks. The RIC technique has been perform.d in an early site preparation which consists of a cut and fill contract for a m.ga project in the Kingdom.of Saudi Arabia. RIC is a process where loose subsurface soils are im.roved through com.action with the utilization of successive im.act blows from.the top surface. This project involves the com.action of the fill m.terials (with an average thickness of 4 m. and loose natural form.tions (averaging 4 m.in depth). The objective of the soil treatm.nt schem. is to increase the relative density of the soils (both fill and natural) to 85%. The usage of the RIC within the site preparation earthwork applications is possible provided the presence of certain elem.nts—specifically, granular m.terials and particles finer than num.er 200 sieve—do not exceed 15%. The RIC m.thod proved to be cost- and tim.-effective when utilized for filling com.action activities since it com.acts considerable soil thicknesses with a single action from.the top surface, and can be used as an alternative to the traditional m.thod of com.acting fill form.tions in pre-determ.ned lift thicknesses.

Near-Eddington accretion rates onto low-m.ss black holes are thought to be a prim. driver of the m.lti-wavelength properties of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 （NLS1） population of active galactic nuclei （AGNs）. Orientation effects have repeatedly been considered as another im.ortant factor involved, but detailed studies have been ham.ered by the lack of m.asured viewing angles towards this type of AGN. Here we present m.lti-epoch, 15 GHz VLBA im.ges （m.JAVE program. of the radio-loud and Ferm./LAT- detected NLS 1 galaxy 1H 0323＋342. These are com.ined with single-dish, m.lti-frequency radio m.nitoring of the source＇s variability, obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m.and IRAm.30-m.telescopes, in the course of the F-GAm.A program. The VLBA im.ges reveal six com.onents with apparent speeds of 1 - 7 c, and one quasi-stationary feature. Com.ining the obtained apparent jet speed （βapp） and variability Doppler factor （Dvar） estim.tes together with other m.thods, we constrain the viewing angle 0 towards 1H 0323＋342 to 0 ≤ 4°-13°. Using literature values of βapp and Dvar, we also deduce a viewing angle of 〈8°-9° towards another radio- and γ-ray-loud NLS1, nam.ly SBS 0846＋513.

Critical Factors for Run-up and Im.act of the Tohoku Earthquake Tsunam.

The earthquake of m.rch 11 of m.gnitude 9 offshore Tohoku, Japan, was followed by a tsunam. wave with particularly destructive im.act, over a coastal area extending approx. 850km.along the Pacific Coast of Honshu Island. First arrival tim.s and m.asurem.nts and m.xim.m.height were recorded by the Japanese m.nitoring system.(wherever there was no failure of the equipm.nt). The m.xim.m.run-up is well evident in satellite im.ges available through USGS, Google and other institutes. m.reover, personal observations of Prof. Lekkas were m.de during a field survey in m.rch 2011. The results of the study of the tsunam. im.act and run-up show the variety of factors affecting the run-up, creating zones with sim.lar phenom.na, but also specific locations where run-up exceeds by far the run-up zone m.xim.m.values. This differentiation, observed also in the past by other authors, is here attributed to the general orientation of the coast, the distance from.the tsunam. generation area, bathym.try offshore, the coastline m.rphology and land geom.rphology. In certain cases that funnelling and reflection effects in narrow gulfs parallel to the tsunam. propagation vector were com.ined with narrow valleys onshore, peak run-up exceeded 20m. or even 40 m.(m.yagi coastline, Ogatsu, Onagawa, etc).
