Increased levels of homocysteine in patients with ulcerative colitis

AIM: To investigate serum levels of homocysteine (Hcys) and the risk that altered levels carry for thrombosis development in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. METHODS: 55 UC patients and 45 healthy adults were included. Hcys, vitamin B12 and folic acid levels were measured in both groups. Clinical history and thrombo- embolic events were investigated. RESULTS: The average Hcys level in the UC patients was 13.3 ± 1.93 μmmol/L (range 4.60-87) and was higher than the average Hcys level of the control group which was 11.2 ± 3.58 μmmol/L (range 4.00-20.8) (P < 0.001). Vitamin B12 and folic acid average values were also lower in the UC group (P < 0.001). Whenmultivariate regression analysis was performed, it was seen that folic acid deficiency was the only risk factor for hyperhomocysteinemia. Frequencies of thromboembolic complications were not statistically significantly different in UC and control groups. When those with and without a thrombosis history in the UC group were compared according to Hcys levels, it was seen that there were no statistically significant differences. A negative linear relationship was found between folic acid levels and Hcys. CONCLUSION: We could not find any correlations between Hcys levels and history of prior thromboembolic events.

The development of lead-free solders has emerged as one of the key issues in the electronics packaging ***-Sn-Ag eutectic alloy has been considered as one of the lead-free solder materials that can replace the toxic Pb-Sn eutectic solder without increasing soldering *** investigated the effects of temperature gradient and growth rate on the mechanical,electrical and thermal properties of the BiSn-Ag ternary eutectic ***-47 wt%Sn-0.68 wt%Ag alloy was directionally solidified upward with different temperature gradients（G=2.33-5.66 K/mm） at a constant growth rate（V=13.25 μm/s） and with different growth rates（V=6.55-132.83 μm/s） at a constant temperature gradient（G=2.33 K/mm） in the growth *** microstructures（λ）,microhardness（HV）,tensile stress（σ）,electrical resistivity（ρ）,and thermal properties（△H,Cp,Tm） were measured on directionally solidified *** dependency of the λ,HV,σ,and ρ on G and V was *** to the experimental results,X values decrease with increasing G and V,but HV,λ,and ρ values increase with increasing G and *** of electrical resistivity（ρ） for cast samples with the temperature in the range of 300-400 K were also measured by using a standard dc four-point probe *** enthalpy of fusion（△H） and specific heat（Cp） for the same alloy was also determined by means of differential scanning calorimeter（DSC） from heating trace during the transformation from eutectic liquid to eutectic solid.

Effects of storage media,supplements and cryopreservation methods on quality of stem cells

Despite a vast amount of different methods, protocols and cryoprotective agents(CPA), stem cells are often frozen using standard protocols that have beenoptimized for use with cell lines, rather than with stem cells. Relatively fewcomparative studies have been performed to assess the effects of cryopreservationmethods on these stem cells. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been a key agent forthe development of cryobiology and has been used universally for ***, the use of DMSO has been associated with in vitro and in vivotoxicity and has been shown to affect many cellular processes due to changes inDNA methylation and dysregulation of gene expression. Despite studies showingthat DMSO may affect cell characteristics, DMSO remains the CPA of choice, bothin a research setting and in the clinics. However, numerous alternatives to DMSOhave been shown to hold promise for use as a CPA and include albumin,trehalose, sucrose, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and many more. Here, wewill discuss the use, advantages and disadvantages of these CPAs for cryopreservationof different types of stem cells, including hematopoietic stem cells,mesenchymal stromal/stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.

Mechanical properties and microstructure of composites produced by recycling metal chips

In this study, the processing and mechanical properties of porous metal matrix composites(MMCs) composed of spheroidal cast iron chips(GGG40) and bronze chips(CuSn10) and formed by hot isostatic pressing were investigated. Bronze chips(CuSn10) were used as a matrix component, and spheroidal cast iron(GGG40) chips were used as a reinforcement component. The MMCs were produced with different CuSn10 contents(90 wt%, 80 wt%, 70 wt%, and 60 wt%). The hot isostatic pressing process was performed under three different pressures and temperatures. The produced MMCs were characterized using density tests, Brinell hardness tests, and compression tests. In addition, the consolidation mechanism was investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The test results were compared with those for bulk CuSn10 and bulk GGG40. Mechanical tests results revealed that the metallic chips can be recycled by using hot pressing and that the mechanical properties of the produced MMCs were similar to those of bulk CuSn10. XRD and microscopy studies showed that no intermetallic compounds formed between the metallic chips. The results showed that the CuSn10 and GGG40 chips were consolidated by mechanical interlocking.

The goal of this study was to optimize the constitutive parameters of foundation soils using a k-means algorithm with clustering analysis. A database was collected from unconfined compression tests, Proctor tests and grain distribution tests of soils taken from three different types of foundation pits： raft foundations, partial raft foundations and strip foundations. k-means algorithm with clustering analysis was applied to determine the most appropriate foundation type given the un- confined compression strengths and other parameters of the different soils.

Predictors of long-term anxiety and depression in discharged COVID-19 patients:A follow-up study

BACKGROUND Patients who were hospitalized for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)faced an extremely stressful experience that challenged their mental health and the longterm effects are not definitely known *** To identify both the course of mental symptoms(anxiety and depressive symptoms)and the related risk factors of recovered patients at the 20-22 mo *** One hundred and seventy-two patients were *** patients were evaluated with a telepsychiatry interview and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS).Sociodemographic and clinical features were analyzed by regression *** The mean HADS-Anxiety(HADS-A)score was 9.08±4.90,and the mean HADSDepression(HADS-D)score was 8.55±*** mean HADS-A(P=0.484)and HADS-D(P=0.011)scores were increased compared to scores during *** over 50 years old,having lower financial status,and being vaccinated were associated with symptoms of depression(adjusted R2=0.168)while being over 50 years old,female sex,being vaccinated,and dyspnea were associated with higher anxiety(adjusted R2=0.245).CONCLUSION To prevent the deterioration of mental health,psychiatrists should play an active role in identifying emerging mental problems as soon as possible,more vulnerable groups should be characterized,and psychological support should be sustained after discharge.

The protective effect of rutin and quercetin on 5-FU-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Objective: To investigate the effects of quercetin(Q) and rutin on 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)-induced ***: The control group was corn oil. The 5-FU group rats were corn oil and injected intraperitoneal 5-FU 50 mg/kg. Groups rutin 50 + 5-FU and rutin 100 + 5-FU were respectively 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg rutin. These groups were given 5-FU(50 mg/kg) in the 18th day. The group rutin 100 was rutin(100 mg/kg i.g.). Groups Q50 + 5-FU and Q100 + 5-FU were respectively 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg quercetin. These groups were given 5-FU(50 mg/kg) in the 18th day of quercetin application. The group Q100 was quercetin(100 mg/kg i.g.). In the end of experimental applications, blood was collected from anesthetized ***: The MDA level was significantly higher in the 5-FU group compared with control group, and determined to be decreased in other groups. GPx and GSH levels were significantly decreased in the 5-FU group compared to the control, rutin 100 + 5-FU and Q100 + 5-FU groups. AST, ALT, LDH and ALP levels in the serum were significantly increased in the 5-FU group compared with the other groups. The results from this analysis show that while the caspase-3 level increases in the 5-FU group, it decreases in the Q50 + 5-FU, Q100 + 5-FU, rutin 50 + 5-FU and rutin 100 + 5-FU groups. Bcl-2 level decreased in the 5-FU group compared to the control group, but increased in the rutin 100 + 5-FU, Q50 + 5-FU and Q100 + 5-FU ***: In this study it was determined that the rutin and Q have protective effects on 5-FU-induced hepatotoxicity.

Coagulation of a giant hemangioma in glans penis with holmium laser

A 21-year-old man presented with an enlarged giant hemangioma on glans penis which also causes an erectile dysfunction （ED） that partially responded to the intracavernous injection stimulation test. Although the findings in magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） indicated a glandular hemangioma, penile colored Doppler ultrasound revealed an invaded cavernausal hemangioma to the glans. Surgical excision was avoided according to the broad extension of the gland lesion. Holmium laser coagulation was applied to the lesion due to the cosmetically concerns. However, the cosmetic results after holmium laser application was not impressive as expected without an improvement in intracavernous injection stimulation test. In conclusion, holmium laser application should not be used to the hemangiomas of glans penis related to the corpus cavernosum, but further studies are needed to reveal the effects of holmium laser application in small hemangiomas restricted to the glans penis.

Clinical risk factors for the development of consecutive exotropia:a comparative clinical study

AIM： To compare a group of patients with consecutive exotropia with patients who had ≤ 10 prism diopters （PD） esotropia or no deviation postoperatively in terms of probable clinical risk factors for the development of consecutive exotropia. METHODS： The study recruited fourteen patients who developed consecutive exodeviation during follow-up period after the correction of esotropia who were categorized as group 1 and thirty-one patients who had still ≤10 PD esotropia or no deviation at the final visit that were considered as group 2. Clinical risk factors leading the development of consecutive deviation were analyzed as the main outcome measures. RESULTS： The mean age of patients was 4.57±3.11y in group 1 and 5.10±3.52y in group 2 （P=0.634）. There was no significant difference of preoperative near and distant deviations among two groups （P =0.835, 0.928 respectively）. The mean amount of medial rectus recession and lateral rectus resection was similar in both groups （P=0.412, 0.648 respectively）. Convergence insufficiency and neurological diseases were more frequent in group 1 （P-0.007, 0.045）. Accompanying neurological disease was found to be as a significant factor increasing the risk of the development of consecutive exotropia significantly [odds ratios （OR）： 5.75 （1.04-31.93）]. CONCLUSION： Accompanying neurological disease appears to be a significant clinical risk factor for the development of consecutive exodeviation during postoperative follow-up after the correction of esotropia. However, larger studies are needed in order to interpret the results to the clinical practice and to ascertain other concurrent risk factors.
