The protean manifestations of central nervous system IgG4-related hypertrophic pachymeningitis:a report of two cases

Background:IgG4-related hypertrophic pachymeningitis is a relative newly recognized and rare manifestation of IgG4-related disease,an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory tumefactive *** than 80 patients have been reported in the literature,and it can mimic common neurosurgical *** describe the clinical presentation of two patients that were initially considered to have a subdural collection,tuberculous meningitis,and a cervical spinal meningioma,but were eventually diagnosed with this *** presentation:Two ethnic Chinese men,86 and 62 years old,experienced a 4-week history of *** patients had a history of autoimmune disease,namely glomerulonephritis and Grave’s disease,*** resonance brain imaging revealed diffuse dural thickening with the latter patient exhibiting homogeneous and intense gadolinium-contrast *** the 86-year-old patient also had progressive bilateral visual loss,giant cell arteritis was suspected and a 2-week course of glucocorticoid therapy was prescribed,but his symptoms failed to *** 62-year-old patient also had accompanying low-grade fever and was treated empirically as having tuberculous meningitis although there were no confirmatory microbiological *** patient further developed right hemiparesis,and additional imaging revealed a C4/5 intradural-extramedullary contrast-enhancing lesion resembling a meningioma causing cord *** patients underwent neurosurgical intervention with the former undergoing a dural biopsy and the latter having the cervical lesion *** final diagnosis was IgG4-related hypertrophic pachymeningitis with the hallmark histological features of lymphoplasmacytic infiltration of IgG4+plasma cells,storiform fibrosis,and obliterative *** addition,their serum IgG4 levels were elevated(i.e.,>135 mg/dL).Both patients received at least 6 months of glucocorticoid therapy while the latter also had *** symptom

Nanoscale plasma-activated aerosol generation for in situ surface pathogen disinfection

Plasma treatment constitutes an efficient method for chemical-free disinfection.A spray-based system for dispensing plasma-activated aerosols onto surfaces would facilitate disinfection of complex and/or hidden surfaces inaccessible to direct line-of-sight(for example,UV)*** complexity and size of current plasma generators(for example,plasma jet and cometary plasma systems)-which prohibit portable operation,together with the short plasma lifetimes,necessitate a miniaturized in situ technique in which a source can be simultaneously activated and administered on-demand onto ***,we demonstrate this possibility by combining two nanoscale technologies for plasma and aerosol generation into an integrated device that is sufficiently small and *** is generated on a carpet of zinc oxide nanorods comprising a nanoneedle ensemble,which when raised to a high electric potential,constitutes a massive point charge array with near-singular electric fields to effect atmospheric *** plasma is then used to activate water transported through an underlying capillary wick,that is subsequently aerosolized under mHz-order surface acoustic *** show that the system,besides being amenable to miniaturization and hence integration into a chipscale device,leads to a considerable improvement in plasma-activation over its macroscale cometary discharge predecessor,with up to 20%and 127%higher hydrogen peroxide and nitrite ion concentrations that are respectively generated in the plasma-activated ***,in turn,leads to a 67%reduction in the disinfection time to achieve 95%bacterial load reduction,therefore demonstrating the potential of the technology as an efficient portable platform for on-demand field-use surface disinfection.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)for forest monitoring has grown significantly in recent years,providing information with high spatial resolution and temporal *** with multispectral sensors allow the use of indexes such as the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),which determines the vigor,physiological stress and photo synthetic activity of *** study aimed to analyze the spectral responses and variations of NDVI in tree crowns,as well as their correlation with climatic factors over the course of one *** study area encompassed a 1.6-ha site in Durango,mexico,where Pinus cembroides,Pinus engelmannii,and Quercus grisea *** images were acquired with UAV and information on meteorological variables was obtained from NASA/POWER *** ANOVA explored possible differences in NDVI among the three *** correlation was performed to identify the linear relationship between NDVI and meteorological *** differences in NDVI values were found at the genus level(Pinus and Quercus),possibly related to the physiological features of the species and their *** grisea had the lowest NDVI values throughout the year which may be attributed to its sensitivity to relative humidity and *** the use of UAV with a multispectral sensor for NDVI monitoring allowed genera differentiation,in more complex forest analyses hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors should be integrated,as well other vegetation indexes be considered.

Objective: To examine the associations of retinal vein occlusion and arteriola r emboli with cardiovascular disease. Design: Population-based cross-sectional study. Participants: Pooled from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (n=12 642; mean age, 60 years) and the Cardiovascular Health Study (n=2824; mean age, 79 years). methods: Retinal vein occlusion and arteriolar emboli were iden tified from a single nonmydriatic retinal photograph using a standardized protoc ol. Photographs were also graded for arteriovenous nicking and focal arteriolar narrowing. All participants had a comprehensive systemic evaluation, including s tandardized carotid ultrasonography. main Outcome measures: Retinal vein occlusi on and arteriolar emboli. Results: Prevalences of retinal vein occlusion and art eriolar emboli were 0.3%(n=39 cases) and 0.2%(n=34 cases), respectively. After adjusting for age, retinal vein occlusion was associated with hypertension (odd s ratio [OR], 2.96; 95%confidence interval [CI], 1.43-6.14), systolic bloo d pr essure (BP) (OR, 4.12; 95%CI, 1.40-12.16; highest quartile vs. lowest), diasto lic BP (OR, 2.64; 95%CI, 1.07-6.46; highest quartile vs. lowest), carotid arte ry plaque (OR, 5.62; 95%CI, 2.60-12.16), body mass index (OR, 3.88; 95%CI, 1. 23-12.18; highest quartile vs. lowest), plasma fibrinogen (OR, 3.29; 95%CI, 1. 08-10.02; highest quartile vs. lowest), arteriovenous nicking (OR, 4.09; 95%CI , 2.00-8.36), and focal arteriolar narrowing (OR, 5.17; 95%CI, 2.59-10.29). A Technical Note: Inter-Observer and Inter-modality Variability of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Ultrasound (US) in Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Kidney Cancer

Introduction: To investigate the inter-observer and inter-modality variabilities of two imaging guided equipments—cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and ultrasound (US) in kidney stereotactic body radiotherapy. methods: A renal metastasis case implanted with three gold anchor fiducial markers was firstly scanned by US to acquire a 3-dimension US image and followed by 4-dimension CBCT in every fraction. Seven observers retrospectively registered the pre-treatment images with the corresponding reference images based on the gold markers. Registration uncertainty of the observers between two imaging modalities was evaluated. Results: The uncertainties over whole treatment course in CBCT were 0.88 mm, 1.94 mm and 0.86 mm in lateral, longitudinal and vertical directions respectively;while 0.8 mm, 0.97 mm and 1.36 mm were found in US. Conclusion: The greatest uncertainty was found in longitudinal direction in CBCT due to the fact that the respiration motion is the most rigorous in cranial-caudal direction. In US, since the probe was hold almost in upright position, the strong echo in vertical direction was attributed to the greatest uncertainty for such direction.
