Bleb needling outcomes for failed trabeculectomy blebs in Asian eyes: a 2-year follow up

·AIm: To describe the outcomes of bleb needling in primary glaucoma in an Asian tertiary eye centre over a2 y period. To compare the success rates between primary angle-closure glaucoma(PACG) and primary open angle glaucoma(POAG). Lastly, to identify factors associated with success of bleb needling.·mETHODS: This was a retrospective review of 227 patients who underwent bleb needling between June2009 and June 2011 in Singapore National Eye *** 5-fluorouracil(5-FU) augmented bleb needling was performed either at the slit lamp or in the operating theatre. Repeat bleb needlings were performed as necessary. Complete success was defined as maintenance of intraocular pressure(IOP) ≥6 mm Hg and ≤21 mm Hg, in the absence of further surgery or use of antiglaucoma medication. Qualified success met the above criteria with or without use of antiglaucoma medications.· RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-five eyes completed the two-year follow up. Sixty-nine percent of participants had POAG and 31% had PACG. The mean interval between filtering surgery and bleb needling was299.9 ±616.4d for POAG and 167.1 ±272.2d for *** needling attempts were 1.9±1.4 and 2±1.6 for POAG and PACG respectively. In general, there was a statistically significant reduction of IOP ranging from21.9% to 26.8% from month 1 through to month 24. The complete success rates at month 6 were 70.0% for POAG and 65.7% for PACG. At month 12, this decreased to62.2% for POAG and PACG and at month 24, 57.9% for POAG and 63.0% for PACG respectively. The qualified success rates at month 6 for POAG and PACG were23.8% and 29.9% respectively, 32.2% and 29.2% at month12, and 34.7% and 29.6% at month 24. The success ratesbetween POAG and PACG were not significantly different(P >0.05 for complete and qualified success at months 6,12 and 24). Titanium machining poses a great challenge to cutting tools, and yields serious negative influence on tool life. Cutting tools wear rapidly in titanium alloys machining due to the high cutting temperature, strong adhesion at the tool/chip interface and tool/workpiece interface. Thus, cooling supply strategies are widely used in its machining process. On account of this, the tool wear performance from dry cutting, flood cooling and minimum quantity lubrication (mQL) techniques are compared so as to find an effective cooling supply strategy in titanium cutting. Experimental results proved that mQL aided machining can remarkably and reliably improve tool life in end milling titanium machining Ti-6AI-4v under the varied cutting speed, feed rate and radial depth of cut.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in micronesians, a Growing Pacific Islander Population in the U.S.

Background: micronesians are a rapidly growing population in Hawaii and the continental U.S. Hepatitis B is prevalent in micronesia, but the consequences in those migrating to the U.S. are unclear. This study characterizes hepatocellular carcinoma in micronesians with comparisons to other Pacific Islanders. methods: A retrospective evaluation was undertaken of 40 micronesian and 142 Non-micronesian Pacific hepatocellular carcinoma patients diagnosed in a large clinical practice in Hawaii from 1993-2017. Results: All micronesians were born outside of the U.S. micronesians were younger at diagnosis (52.0 vs. 60.2 years), had higher rates of hepatitis B (80% vs. 31.2%), a family history of hepatocellular carcinoma (17.5% vs. 4.4%) and more tumors m (64.1% vs. 45.2%). Non micronesian Pacific Islanders had higher rates of Hepatitis C (48.6% vs. 22.5%) and hypertension (61.7% vs. 32.4%). There was no difference in the proportions of screen-detected tumors, those meeting milan criteria, tumor stage, or liver function. micronesians had better 5-year survival rates (48% vs. 16.7%). Conclusion: Hepatocellular carcinoma in micronesians is primarily Hepatitis B-related. micronesians were equally likely to have hepatocellular carcinoma found with screening, undergo transplant and had better survival. Our study emphasizes the need for hepatitis B screening and hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance in micronesians.

Past changes in the abundance of diatoms as inferred from a sediment core from Hebe Haven, Saikung, Hong Kong

The purpose of this study was to infer changes in water quality from diatom stratigraphy of a sediment core taken from Hebe Haven, New Territories, Hong Kong, China. Diatoms and diatom fragments were counted in the top (0—5 cm) and bottom (20—25 cm) portions of the core. The core was age dated using 210 Pb and these results were used to calculate a mean sedimentation rate(0 69 cm/a). A significant difference in the total number of diatoms and their relative abundance between the top 0—5 cm and the bottom 20—25 cm was found ( p y higher diatom species diversity and a more even diatom species composition occurred at 20—25 cm some 40—60 years ago. This difference was interpreted as a reflection of the water quality changes which have occurred over the last 40—60 years in Hebe Haven. Benthic diatoms once flushed in the clear waters of Hebe Haven as reported by individuals who swam and boated there immediately after WW II. Increased turbidity in recent years has apparently increased the relative abundance of planktonic diatoms at the expense of benthic diatoms which today are unable to receive sufficient light to grow on the bottom of the Hebe Haven Harbor (mean depth about 6 m). The observed increase in planktonic diatom abundance in the top 5 cm of the sediment core was attributed to increased nutrient loading to Hebe Haven over the last three decades.

The coming Big Data Era requires progress in storage and computing *** an emerging memory technology,Resistive RAm(RRAm)has shown its potential in the next generation high-density storage and neuromorphic computing applications,which extremely demand low switching voltage and power *** this work,a 10 nm-thick amorphous GeS_(2)thin film was utilized as the functional layer of RRAm in a combination with Ag and Pt *** structure and memory performance of the GeS_(2)-based RRAm device was characterized-it presents high on/off ratio,fast switching time,ultralow switching voltage(0.15 V)and power consumption(1.0 pJ and 0.56 pJ for PROGRAm and ERASE operations,respectively).We attribute these competitive memory characteristics to Ag doping phenomena and subsequent formation of Ag nano-islands in the functional layer that occurs due to diffusion of Ag from electrode into the GeS_(2)thin *** properties enable applications of GeS_(2)for low energy RRAm device.
