Bone density, microarchitecture and stiffness in Caucasian and Caribbean Hispanic postmenopausal American women

Hispanic Americans of Caribbean origin are a fast-growing subset of the US population, but there are no studies on bone density, microstructure and biomechanical integrity in this minority group. In this study, we aimed to compare Caucasian and Caribbean Hispanic postmenopausal American women with respect to these characteristics. Thirty-three Caribbean Hispanics were age-matched to thirty-three Caucasian postmenopausal women. At the lumbar spine, the Hispanic women had significantly lower areal bone mineral density （aBmD）. At the radius by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography （HR-pQCT）, there were minimal differences between Hispanic and Caucasian women. At the tibia, Hispanic women had lower trabecular volumetric bone density and trabecular number, and higher trabecular separation. Individual trabecula segmentation （ITS） analyses indicated that at the tibia, Hispanic women not only had significantly lower bone volume fraction, but also had significantly lower rod bone volume fraction, plate trabecular number, rod trabecular number and lower plate-plate, plate-rod and rod-rod junction densities compared to Caucasian women. The differences in bone quantity and quality contributed to lower whole bone stiffness at the radius, and both whole bone and trabecular bone stiffness at the tibia in Hispanic women. In conclusion, Hispanic women had poorer bone mechanical and microarchitectural properties than Caucasian women, especially at the load-bearing distal tibia.

The adaptability of the central nervous system has been revealed in several model *** particular interest to central nervous system-injured individuals is the ability for neural components to be modified for regain of *** both types of neurotrauma,traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury,the primary parasympathetic control to the gastrointestinal tract,the vagus nerve,remains anatomically ***,individuals with traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury are highly susceptible to gastrointestinal *** gastrointestinal dysfunctions attribute to higher morbidity and mortality following traumatic brain injury and spinal cord *** the vagal efferent output remains capable of eliciting motor responses following injury,evidence suggests impairment of the vagal *** sensory input drives motor output,this review will discuss the normal and altered anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal vagal afferents to better understand the contributions of vagal afferent plasticity following neurotrauma.

Consistent individual differences in fathering in threespined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus

There is growing evidence that individual animals show consistent differences in behavior. For example, individual threespined stickleback fish differ in how they react to predators and how aggressive they are during social interactions with con- specifics. A relatively unexplored but potentially important axis of variation is parental behavior. In sticklebacks, fathers provide all of the parental care that is necessary for offspring survival; therefore paternal care is directly tied to fitness. In this study, we assessed whether individual male sticklebacks differ consistently from each other in parental behavior. We recorded visits to nest, total time fanning, and activity levels of 11 individual males every day throughout one clutch, and then allowed the males to breed again. Half of the males were exposed to predation risk while parenting during the first clutch, and the other half of the males ex- perienced predation risk during the second clutch. We detected dranlatic temporal changes in parental behaviors over the course of the clutch： for example, total time fanning increased six-fold prior to eggs hatching, then decreased to approximately zero. De- spite these temporal changes, males retained their individually-distinctive parenting styles within a clutch that could not be ex- plained by differences in body size or egg mass. moreover, individual differences in parenting were maintained when males re- produced for a second time. males that were exposed to simulated predation risk briefly decreased fanning and increased activity levels. Altogether, these results show that individual sticklebacks consistently differ from each other in how they behave as parents [Current Zoology 58 （1）： 45-52, 2012].

The purpose of this paper is to complement the results by Lanzani and stein(2017) by showing the dense definability of the Cauchy-Leray transform for the domains that give the counter-examples of Lanzani and stein(2017), where L^p-boundedness is shown to fail when either the "near" C^2 boundary regularity, or the strong C-linear convexity assumption is dropped.

TO THE EDITORWe read with great interest and a bit of surprise the article by Tonus et al. We would share herein our comments about it. The specificity of the fecal tumor m2 pyruvate kinase 0VI2-PK） reported by Tonus et al for diagnosing colorectal cancer （CRC） is 93%. This is considerably higher than in any of the previously published studies. In our work, the maximum specificity of fecal m2- PK is 78% （Table 1）. There is a vast difference of 15% between the previous studies and the current study of Tonus et al, which is difficult to explain. We are skeptical about such a high specificity reported by the authors.

Effect of ezetimibe on the prevalence of cholelithiasis

AIm： To investigate the prevalence of cholelithiasis among patients treated with ezetimibe. mETHODS： A retrospective, case-control study based on computerized medical records from patients of the Clalit Health Services, Sharon-Shomron region, from 2000 to 2009. Patients 20-85 years of age, who had been treated with ezetimibe and statins or statins only for at least 6 too, and who had an abdominal ultrasound were included in the study. Collected data included age, gender, ezetimibe treatment duration, presence of hypothyroidism or diabetes, and existence of cholelithiasis as determined by ultrasound. Ex- cluded were subjects after gallbladder resection, with hemolysis, myeloproliferative or inflammatory bowel diseases, and those treated with ursodeoxycholic acid and fibrates. Patients treated with statins and ezeti- mibe （study group） were compared to patients treated with statins only （control group）. RESULTS： The study group included 25 patients and the control group 168. All patients in the study were treated with statins. The study group included 13 males （52%） and 12 females （48%）, the control group 76 males （45%） and 92 （55%） females （P = 0.544）. The groups did not differ in age （mean age： 68 ± 8 years, range 53-85 years vs mean age： 71±8 years, range 51-85 years; P = 0.153） or in the rate of dia- betic and hypothyroid patients [11 （44%） vs 57 （33%）, P = 0.347 in the study group and 5 （20%） vs 23 （14%）, P = 0.449 in the control group, respectively]. Patients in the study group were treated with ezetimibe for an average of 798±379 d. Cholelithiasis was found in 4 （16%） patients in the study group and in 33 （20%） patients in the control group （P = 0.666）. CONCLUSION： Ezetimibe does not appear to influ- ence the prevalence of gallstones.

Gastroenteric tube feeding plays a major role in the management of patients with poor voluntary intake,chronic neurological or mechanical dysphagia or gut dysfunction,and patients who are critically ***,despite the benefits and widespread use of enteral tube feeding,some patients experience *** review aims to discuss and compare current knowledge regarding the clinical application of enteral tube feeding,together with associated complications and special *** conducted an extensive literature search on Pubmed,Embase and medline using index terms relating to enteral access,enteral feeding/nutrition,tube feeding,percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy/jejunostomy,endoscopic nasoenteric tube,nasogastric tube,and refeeding *** literature showed common routes of enteral access to include nasoenteral tube,gastrostomy and jejunostomy,while complications fall into four major categories:mechanical,e.g.,tube blockage or removal;gastrointestinal,e.g.,diarrhea;infectious e.g.,aspiration pneumonia,tube site infection;and metabolic,e.g.,refeeding syndrome,*** the type and frequency of complications arising from tube feeding vary considerably according to the chosen access route,gastrointestinal complications are without doubt the most *** associated with enteral tube feeding can be reduced by careful observance of guidelines,including those related to food composition,administration rate,portion size,food temperature and patient supervision.

A multicriteria Decision Analytic Approach to Systems Resilience

This article develops a novel decision-oriented framework that strategically deconstructs systems resilience in a way that focuses on systems' design, capabilities, and management. The framework helps evaluate and compare how system design choices impact system resilience. First, we propose a resilience score based on a piecewise linear approximation to a resilience curve. Using multicriteria decision analysis principles, we score system design alternatives in terms of system-specific capabilities. We estimate the relevance of these capabilities to resilience curve parameters associated with resilience ***, we interpret the derivatives of resilience with respect to the curve parameter values as the leverage of these parameters. Using multiple levels of weighted sums of the scores, we calculate the first order impact of system design choices first on a proxy for the generic resilience parameters and then on resilience, which allows situational characteristics to be incorporated in their natural terminology while mapping their impact on resilience with a traceable logic. We illustrate the approach by using existing materials to develop an example comparing engineered designs for minimizing post-wildfire flood impacts.

Aberrant Th2 inflammation drives dysfunction of alveolar macrophages and susceptibility to bacterial pneumonia

The ubiquitin ligase,Itch,is required to prevent autoinflammatory disease in mice and ***-deficient mice develop lethal pulmonary inflammation characterized by the production of Th2 cytokines(for example,interleukin-4(IL-4));however,the contribution of Itch to immune defense against respiratory pathogens has not been *** found that Itch-deficient mice were highly susceptible to intranasal infection with the respiratory pathogen Klebsiella *** Itch-deficient mice exhibited increased immune cell infiltration,cytokine levels and bacterial burden in the respiratory tract compared with control ***,numbers of resident alveolar macrophages were reduced in the lungs from Itch-deficient mice both before and after *** levels of Th2 cytokines in the respiratory tract correlated with deceased alveolar macrophages,and genetic ablation of IL-4 restored alveolar macrophages and host defense to *** in Itch-deficient mice,suggesting that loss of alveolar macrophages occurred as a consequence of Th2 *** transfer of Itch−/−CD4+T cells into Rag−/−mice was sufficient to drive reduction in numbers of Itch-replete alveolar ***,we found that Stat6 signaling downstream of the IL-4 receptor directly reduced fitness of alveolar macrophages when these cells were exposed to the Itch−/−inflamed respiratory *** data suggest that Th2 inflammation directly impairs alveolar macrophage fitness in Itch−/−mice,and elucidate a previously unappreciated link between Th2 cells,alveolar macrophages and susceptibility to bacterial infection.
