Do non-target species visit feeders and water troughs targeting small game?A study from farmland Spain using camera-trapping

Provision of food and water is a widespread tool implemented around the world for the benefit of game and other wildlife,but factors affecting the use of food and water by non-target species are poorly *** evaluated visits to feeders and water troughs by non-game species using camera-traps in two separate areas of *** and water troughs were either“protected”(when surrounded by more than 50%of shrubs/forest)or“open”(in the opposite case).A total of 18948 photos from 5344 camera-trapping days depicted animals,and 75 species were *** and water troughs were visited by target species(partridges and lagomorphs,55.3%of visits)and non-target species(44.7%of visits).Among the latter,corvids were themost common(46.1%of visits),followed by rodents(26.8%),other birds(23.6%,mainly passerines),columbids(1.9%),and other species at minor *** highest proportion of visiting days to feeders and water troughs was from corvids(0.173)followed by otherbirds(0.109)and rodents(0.083);the lowest proportion was recorded for columbids(0.016).Use intensity and visit frequency of water troughs tripled that recorded in feeders,and visits to open feeders/troughs were approximately twice those to protected *** summary:feeders and water troughs targeting small game species are also used regularly by non-target ones;they should be set close to cover to optimize their use by non-target species that are not competitors of target species(though corvids may visit them);water availability should be prioritized where drought periods are expected.

The Egyptia n mon goose (Herpestes ichneumon Linn aeus, 1758) is a medium-sized car nivore that experienced remarkable geographic expansion over the last 3 decades in the Iberian Peninsula. In this study, we investigated the association of species-related and abiotic factors with spleen weight (as a proxy for immunocompete nee) in the species. We assessed the relationship of body con dition, sex, age, seas on, and envir onmental conditi ons with splee n weight established for 508 hunted specimens. Our results indicate that the effects of sex and season outweigh those of all other variables, including body condition. Spleen weight is higher in males than in females, and heavier spleens are more likely to be found in spring, coinciding with the highest period of investment in reproduction due to mating, gestation, birth, and lactation. Coupled with the absence of an effect of body condition, our findi ngs suggest that splee n weight variation in this species is mostly influe need by lifehistory traits linked to reproduction, rather than overall energy availability, winter immunoenhancement, or energy partitioning effects, and prompt further research focusing on this topic.

Introduction: Allostatic load (AL) index proposes indicators for the functioning of the main potentially stress-affected systems. Sex differences in stress response and stress-related diseases susceptibility have been described for the general population. In this observational study we describe the effects of sex and age on AL variables, in a cohort of patients with general anxiety disorders and neuroticism treated with alprazolam during 12 weeks, before and after treatment. Methods: Patients with general (DSM IV) anxiety disorders with >6 in Hamilton scale, AL (>1 Crimmins and Seeman AL modified criteria) and neuroticism >18 (nEO-FFI inventory), were included. All patients completed psychiatric assessment, AL index determination before (−1 week) and after 12 weeks of treatment with alprazolam (0.25 - 1 mg/t.i.d). Allostatic load parameters comprised cardiovascular, metabolic and inflammatory variables. Univariate analysis (two-way AnOVA), Student’s t-test (related variables) and Pearson correlations were determined. Results: Fifty-four patients, 35 females (48.6 ± 11.7 years) and 19 males (44.2 ± 12.8 years) with general anxiety disorder were included;28 patients with Conclusions: In this preliminary analysis we described sex and age differences in psychiatry aspects and AL indexes in patients with general anxiety disorders in the short-term treatment with alprazolam. These considerations remark the need of pondering sex and age differences during the use of drugs for protracted periods.

The Quaternary, like the long-abandoned terms Primary, Secondary and Tertiary, is a very ambiguous word, whose chronological meaning is not very well defined. Its usage spread very quickly, perhaps due to its more-or-less close relationship with the human history and with the latest glaciations. However, the oldest of human fossil record, according to recent discoveries in Africa (Djourab Desert in Tchad), is about 7 million years old, rather than 2 million years as suggested by fossils at O1duvai. Moreover, for some time now, it has been known that the first Quaternary-type glaciations occurred in several regions of the Earth between 2.5 and 3 million years ago, that is prior to the Pliocene-Pleistocene limit at 1.81 million years ago, as determined by the GSSP. These facts have led some researchers, mostly from the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), and from the International Association for Quaternary Research (InQUA), to suggest changes in the subdivision of the neocenozoic. Certainly, discussions on this subject will be raised at many scientiflc meetings in the near future until almost unanimous agreement can be attained. Some additional suggestions are presented here, as a contribution to resolution of these nomenclatorial issues.

Semantic and Phonemic Verbal Fluency Performance in Patients with General Anxiety Disorders and Allostatic Load under Alprazolam Treatment

Purpose: Anxiety disorders are frequently associated with chronic stress with possible cognitive consequences. The aim of this study was to determine the verbal fluency performance in a cohort of patients with anxiety disorders and allostatic load, treated with alprazolam during 12 weeks. Methods: Patients with GAD (general anxiety disorders, DSM IV), with >6 in Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), neuroticism > 18 (nEO-FFI inventory), and normal Mini-Mental State Examination were included. Clinical and Psychiatric examination, Allostatic Load Index and cognitive assessment were analyzed before and after 12 weeks of treatment. The phonemic and semantic verbal fluency tests were determined in all patients. The scoring for each fluency task was determined by counting the number of correct words. The total score from each semantic and phonemic verbal task was analyzed comparing the individual score with normal data controlled by age and sex. Patients with scores > ?2 standard deviation (SD) from normative data were considered impaired. Results: Fifty-four patients completed the semantic verbal fluency test before treatment and fifty patients completed after treatment. According to the z-scores before treatment 7 patients of 54 (12.9%) had verbal fluency impairments. After treatment none patients showed semantic verbal fluency deficits but 3 patients of 50 (6%) showed phonemic impairments. Impaired group was significantly associated with an older age before treatment (p = 0.033) and with a similar tendency but not significant (p = 0.09) after treatment (Student t test). Conclusion: In this study older age factor was associated with verbal fluency impairment in GAD patients. Stratified treatments analyzing age and sex factors, including allostatic load measurements and cognitive assessments may be useful tools to determine the effectiveness and the safety of psychopharmacological treatments.

Karrikin and Cyanohydrin Smoke Signals Provide Clues to new Endogenous Plant Signaling Compounds

Two new types of signaling compounds have been discovered in wildfire smoke due to their ability to stimulate seed germination. The first discovered were karrikins, which share some structural similarity with the strigol- actone class of plant hormones, and both signal through a common F-box protein. However, karrikins and strigolactones operate through otherwise distinct signaling pathways, each distinguished by a specific a/13 hydrolase protein. Genetic analysis suggests that plants contain endogenous compounds that signal specifically through the karrikin pathway. The other active compounds discovered in smoke are cyanohydrins that release germination-stimulating cyanide upon hydrolysis. Cyanohydrins occur widely in plants and have a role in defense against other organisms, but an additional role in endogenous cyanide signaling should also now be considered.

Purpose:To assess clinical results of the 9 mW/5.4 j/cm^(2) accelerated crosslinking(ACXL)in the treatment of progressive keratoconus(KC)over a span of 5 ***:The prospective open non-randomized interventional study(Siena Eye-Cross Study 2)included 156 eyes of 112 patients with early progressive KC undergoing the Epi-Off 9 mW/5.4 j/cm^(2) ACXL at the Siena Crosslinking Centre,*** mean age was 18.05±5.6 *** 20-min treatments were performed using the new KXL I(Avedro,Waltham,USA),10 min of 0.1%HPMC Riboflavin soaking(VibeX Rapid,Avedro,Waltham,USA)and 10 min of continuous-light UV-A *** distance visual acuity(UDVA),corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA),Kmax,coma,minimum corneal thickness(MCT),surface asymmetry index(SAI),endothelial cell count(ECC)were measured,and corneal OCT ***:UDVA and CDVA improved significantly at the 3rd(P=0.028),Δ+0.17 Snellen lines and 6th postoperative month,respectively(Pnellen *** improved at the 6th postoperative month(P=0.03),Δ−1.49 diopters from the baseline ***,coma aberration value improved significantly(P=0.004).A mild temporary haze was recorded in 14.77%of patients without affecting visual acuity and without persistent *** OCT revealed a mean demarcation line depth at 332.6±33.6μ***:The 5-year results of Epi-Off 9 mW/5.4 j/cm^(2) ACXL demonstrated statistically significant improvements in UCVA and CDVA,corneal curvature and corneal higher-order aberrations which confers a long-term stability for progressive *** on the results of the Siena Eye-Cross Study 2,the 9 mW/5.4 j/cm^(2) ACXL is a candidate to be the natural evolution of Epi-Off CXL treatment for the management of early progressive corneal ectasia,and thus optimize clinic workflow.
