A procedure to assess the spatial variability in the importance of abiotic factors affecting distributions： the case of world freshwater fishes

Understanding the factors shaping species' distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aims were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species may vary spatially and/or may depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discriminate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estimated with the instability index included in the R package SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes: 1) each river basin where the species is present (local); 2) all river basins where the species is present (regional); and 3) the whole Earth (global). We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclimatic and topographic variables. Factors associated with temperature and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the smaller considered extent. Altitude and a mix of factors associated with temperature and precipitation were more important when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the importance of factors, both between species and within species and from region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in importance toward the equator.

Meta-analysis of ground movements associated with deep excavations using a data mining approach

This paper presents a rigorous statistical approach to identify the controlling factors in the development of ground movements associated with deep excavations. It also gives the most suitable definition of support stiffness from many suggested definitions in the literature. The study is based on a newly compiled database from 389 case studies of propped and anchored excavations. Data mining techniques(e.g. principal component analysis and multi-linear regression) were used to identify significant relationships between the parameters under study and to quantify the global trends in the database. The study shows that the main factors controlling the ground movements are those related to ground conditions, confirming the conclusions of previous empirical studies. It is also shown that the definition of Addenbrooke et al.(1994) is the most suitable expression of support stiffness, therefore providing conclusive evidence for its future use.

Water Footprint in a Basket of Exportable Agricultural Products of San Juan Province

This paper calculates the water footprint(WF)and virtual water(VW)for a basket of exportable agricultural products of San Juan province.This basket includes:onion,white garlic and grapes for raisins.The VW of these three productions is calculated and the consumption is evaluated in relation to the theoretical water reservoir capacity of the province.It is compared with results of other jobs.The methodology used is based on the WF assessment manual and on Food and Agriculture Organization’s(FAO’s)CROPWAT 8.0 model to identify the crops’water requirements and on the CIMWAT 2.0 climate database.Finally,recommendations are made for a more efficient use of water for agricultural production.

Performance evaluation of lateral canopy shakers with catch frame for continuous harvesting of oranges for juice industry

Citrus is mainly oriented to fresh consumption,and harvesting is usually performed manually.However,the high cost of harvesting and the low availability of labour can compromise the profitability of the crop when it is destined to juice industry.The development of citrus mechanical harvesting for industrial processing is conditioned to reach a high fruit removal efficiency,with a reduced damage to both fruit and trees.The current machines available are very large,requiring extensive plantations with long rows of trees to be efficient.In this study,two lateral canopy shakers equipped with a catch frame were evaluated to harvest independently both sides of the hedge on intensive citrus plantations with the main objective of determining their performance and feasibility.The lateral canopy shakers tested were three tractor-drawn machines,one commercial machine and two prototypes.The tested machines reached a mean value of 78%of fruit removal.Besides,the prototypes,equipped with a catch frame,were able to recover a mean value of 70%of yield.Although the results were promising,for achieving an efficient result,the application of this harvesting technology still requires a process of improvement,and the adaptation of both the machine and the plantation.The machines should reduce the amount of post-harvest ground fruit(5.9%-10.4%).Tree damages generated by the contact of the catch frame with the trunk and the metal rods with main branches were the most relevant.Therefore,it is still necessary to increase the ground speed of the machinery and improving the design of the rods,regulating the rod penetrating deep in the canopy to improve the fruit recovery and limit the damage caused to the trees.

Clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of schwannomas of the esophagus and stomach: A case series and systematic review

BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal schwannomas are slow-growing benign mesenchymal neoplasms that originate from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath of Auerbach′s plexus or less frequently from Meissner′s plexus.The main differential diagnosis of gastric schwannomas are the gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs),which are classified by their immunohistochemistry.The treatment of choice for gastric schwannomas is surgery where laparoscopy plays an important role.Wedge resection,subtotal or total gastrectomy can be done.In its counterpart,esophageal schwannomas are benign tumors of the esophagus that are very uncommon since they comprise less than 2%of all esophageal tumors.The main differential diagnosis is the leiomyoma which corresponds to the most common benign esophageal tumor,followed by GIST.The treatment consists on tumoral enucleation or esophagectomy.AIM To review the available literature about gastrointestinal schwannomas;especially lesions from de stomach and esophagus,including diagnosis,treatment,and follow up,as well as,reporting our institutional experience.METHODS A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes guidelines.The following databases were used for reviewing process:Pub Med,Ovid,MEDLINE,and Scopus.Only English language manuscripts were included.All gastrointestinal schwannomas specifically located in the esophagus and stomach were included.Cases that did not report long-term follow-up were excluded.RESULTS Gastric localization showed a higher prevalence in both,the literature review and our institution:94.95%(n=317)and 83%(n=5)respectively.With a follow-up with disease-free survival greater than 36 mo in most cases:62.01%(n=80)vs66.66%(n=4).In both groups,the median size was>4.1 cm.Surgical treatment is curative in most cases CONCLUSION Schwannoma must be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors.It has a good prognosis,and most are benign.A disease-free survival of more than 36 mo can

Application of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum var. nova in Intensive Agriculture： A Study Case

Intensive agriculture contributes to a decrease in microbial biomass and crop yields, while accelerating soil degradation. Arbuscular mycorrhizae associations have direct benefits for plant nutrition, and may be considered a useful tool in modern agriculture. Notwithstanding the widespread knowledge of these benefits, their use in intensive farming systems has until now been ineffectual, because most mycorrhizal species have low tolerance toward high concentrations of nutrients and are poorly adapted to the soil and/or mycorrhizal functioning. The aim of this work was to test the efficacy of an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum on lettuce and table grape crops in different intensive farming systems. The variables studied were root colonization percentage, external mycelium concentration, gas exchange, photosynthetic activity, root starch concentration and plant nutrition. The main finding was that the fungus is tolerant of a wide range of soil pH values, high salinity levels and abundant external mycelium. In lettuce, it produced significant increases in plant physiological activity and productivity (10%-15%); and in table grapes, increases of 12%-45% in yield were achieved for more than three years in Crimson variety, and significant increases in fruit cluster weight, color uniformity and Brix (°Bx). The AM species is protected by two patents and is a component of MycoUp, MycoUp Activ, Resid HC and Resid MG, whose commercial application has spread to more than 30 countries, with increments in crop yields of 8%-45% in lines as varied as leaf vegetables, berries, fruit, olives, grapes, greenhouse crops and cereals.

On the Reliability (Remagnetization?) of Paleomagnetic Poles Obtained from Permo-Silurian Rocks from Oaxaca Mexico, Belize and Guatemala: Insights from Rock Magnetic Studies

In the reconstruction of past movements of tectonic plates, the determination of reliable paleomagnetic poles is of utmost importance. To achieve accurate results, a full knowledge of the rock magnetic properties of the samples is required particularly for Curie point, for grain-size analyses in addition to thermal and alternating field (a.f.) demagnetization experiments. We present the comparative results of 20 sites drilled at 3 different Paleozoic areas: The Permian rocks of the Juchatengo area in Oaxaca, Mexico;the Late Silurian (~418 Ma) Mountain Pine Ridge Granite, the Hummingbird Granite in Belize, and the Early Leonardian Chochal Limestone in Guatemala. The samples of all 20 sites were subjected to a.f. and thermal demagnetization in 16 steps from NRM to 100 mT, the thermally demagnetized samples were cleaned in 15 increasing temperature steps from NRM up to 675℃. Principal component analysis was applied to the samples in order to obtain their respective mean directions. Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (SIRM), hysteresis loops, and coercivity experiments performed indicate that about 90% of the samples were characterized by Multi-Domain (MD) grain sizes and the rest were in the Pseudo-Single Domain (PSD) range of the Day diagram. Curie point determinations results ranged from 190℃ to 660℃, indicating the presence of titanomagnetites as well as hematite. In the Juchatengo area reliable poles were obtained from 3 sites, in Belize 3 sites and only 2 sites of the Permian Chochal Formation, Guatemala yielded coherent and useful results. All the “reliable” paleopoles obtained do not agree with the APWP of North America.

Background Little information exists about the role of anemia in patients with acute coronary syndromes(ACS)admitted to Intensive Cardiac Care Units(ICCU).The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anemia and its impact on management and outcomes in this clinical setting.Methods All consecutive patients admitted to eight different ICCUs with diagnosis of non-ST segment elevation ACS(NSTEACS)were prospectively included.Anemia was defined as hemoglobin<130 g/L in men and<120 g/L in women.The association between anemia and mortality or readmission at six months was assessed by the Cox regression method.Results A total of 629 patients were included.Mean age was 66.6 years.A total of 197 patients(31.3%)had anemia.Coronary angiography was performed in most patients(96.2%).Patients with anemia were significantly older,with a higher prevalence of comorbidities,poorer left ventricle ejection fraction and higher GRACE score values.Patients with anemia underwent less often coronary angiography,but underwent more often intraaortic counterpulsation,non-invasive mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapies.Both ICCU and hospital stay were significantly longer in patients with anemia.Both the incidence of mortality(HR=3.36,95%CI:1.43–7.85,P=0.001)and the incidence of mortality/readmission were significantly higher in patients with anemia(HR=2.80,95%CI:2.03–3.86,P=0.001).After adjusting for confounders,the association between anemia and mortality/readmission remained significant(P=0.031).Conclusions Almost one of three NSTEACS patients admitted to ICCU had anemia.Most patients underwent coronary angiography.Anemia was independently associated to poorer outcomes at 6 months.

Integrated Off-Line Ballast for High Brightness LEDs with Dimming Capability

This paper presents an off-line integrated full ballast to supply a 35W assembly of Power LEDs. The proposed solution integrates an input PFC stage (a flyback converter operating in DCM) and a DC-DC output converter (a buck converter) into a single switch power stage, operating with peak current control. As it will be shown, this control scheme maintains the current through the load constant, regardless of the instantaneous value of the DC link voltage. This issue allows the use of a small capacitor for the DC link, which enhances the overall system reliability. The complete ballast has full dimming capability, and all the analysis and design steps are presented, thus ensuring the fulfilling of the existing regulations. The novelty of the final solution comes from the simplicity and robustness of the control scheme in an integrated compact single-switch power stage. A final prototype of the ballast has been built and tested, and experimental results are shown in the last part of the paper. Finally, conclusions and future developments are shown.

柑橘主要以鲜食为主,一般采用人工采摘方式。然而,当作物收获成本过高,而人手不足时,就会损害作物的盈利能力,这是果汁行业的宿命。为产业加工而发展柑橘机械采摘的前提是实现高效去果,同时减少对水果和树木的损害。目前可用的机械体积大,需要大面积的种植园和成行的树木才能发挥效率。在该研究中,两个配备了捕获框架的横向树冠振动器,在密集柑橘园树篱两侧独立采摘,以评估其性能和可行性。受测试的横向树冠振动器有三台,由拖拉机牵引,一台是商用机器,两台是样机。被测机器的平均去果率达到78%。此外,原型机,配备一个捕获框架,能够恢复平均值70%的产量。虽然研究成果达到预期,但要取得有效的成果,这种收获技术的应用仍需要改进处理和机器-种植园的相互适应。机器应减少采后磨碎水果的数量(5.9%～10.4%)。捕获框架与树干接触以及金属杆与主干接触是造成树木损伤的主因。因此,仍需提高机械的行驶速度,改进杆的设计,调节杆进入树冠的深度,以提高果实的采收率,减少对树木的伤害。
