Anti-Acinetobacter baumannii activity of Rumex crispus L. and Rumex sanguineus L. extracts

Objective:To examine the effect of Rumex crispus(R.crispus)and Rumex sanguineus(R.sanguineus)plant extracts against isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii(A.baumannii)from wounds,including multidrug-resistant strains.Methods:Six prepared Rumex extracts were subjected to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.Antimicrobial activity of extracts and pure compounds(catechin,quercetin,isoquercitrin,emodin,and gallic acid)was examined by a microtiter plate method,while for determination of compound binary combinations activity a checkerboard method was applied.Active fractions of extracts were detected by agar-overlay high-performance thinlayer chromatography-bioautography assay followed by liquid chromatography-diode array detection-mass spectrometry analysis.Results:A total of 28 compounds were detected in two extracts of R.crispus and 26 compounds in four different R.sanguineus extracts,with catechin as a dominant component.Anti-A.baumannii activity was confirmed for all six R.sanguineus and R.crispus extracts at the concentration range from 1 to 4 mg/mL.Neither examined single compounds nor their binary combinations exhibited an anti-A.baumannii activity(MIC>256μg/mL).The bioautography showed that fractions with the most prominent anti-A.baumannii activity tended to contain more polar compounds,predominantly flavonol(quercetin and kaempherol)glycosides;but also fractions containing flavanone(eriodictyol)glycosides and anthraquinone(emodin)glycosides;and less polar eriodictyol aglycone.Conclusions:The results justify and elucidate the traditional application of R.sanguineus and R.crispus extracts for wound healing,indicating the necessity for their further examination in combat against multidrug-resistant A.baumannii isolates from wounds.

The Role of RNA Epitranscriptomics and the RNA Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated Demethylase in Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and one of the most significant sources of cancer mortality. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a particularly aggressive subtype that has proven difficult to treat with standard chemotherapies. Obesity has also been shown to exacerbate breast cancer, and diagnoses of these two diseases frequently overlap. Both conditions are regulated in part by the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) demethylase, an RNA demethylase which may drive breast cancers through epigenetic alterations to gene expression. Methods of inhibiting FTO have been researched in vitro and in vivo as an alternative or adjunct to chemotherapies in multiple cancers, including breast cancer. Translating knowledge of the role of FTO in breast cancer and the development of novel agents may allow for improvements in the treatment of this refractory cancer. This review therefore aims to provide an overview of existing and developing chemical inhibitors of FTO that could be innovatively studied for the treatment of TNBC and associated comorbidity.

Determination on Microclimatic Conditions at Vines upon Development on Gray Mold (<i>Botrytis cinerea</i>)

One of the most important plant diseases in viticulture is gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers. Fr., the anamorph of an ascomycete fungus (Botryotinia fuckeliana Whetzel). Locality Smilica, Kavadarci, Republic of North Macedonia, was the place where experimental fields with white varieties Smedervka and Zilavka were continuously observed. Working hypothesis was to follow development of the disease after increasing glucose over 11% until the time of the grape harvest, and microclimate was monitored at the same time. In both white varieties Smederevka and Zilavka on the control variants weren’t used botricide treatments to distinguish between the variants that were conventionally treated against B. cinerea. The aim of the research was to determine how microclimatic conditions affect the development of B. cinerea and consequently to create forecasting model for gray mold. The forecasting model for B. cinerea is based on relationship between temperature and humidity in the vines’ canopies. The aim of the research is to prevent development of B. cinerea and consequently reduce the number of chemical treatments.

Biodiversity in the Republic of Macedonia

Status and trends of biodiversity components in Republic of Macedonia are presented in this article. The monitoring of biodiversity components is conducted according to the criteria of SEBI 2010 (Streamlining European 2010 Biodiversity Indicators) for establishment of consistency at global, regional, EU and national indicator level. Two core segments of the Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of Republic of Macedonia are presented as well as the draft list of biodiversity indicators. Ecosystems and biotopes (presented with plant communities) are explained from which 30 Corine habitat classes are identified for the Republic of Macedonia. The number of endemic and endangered species from different taxonomic groups of vascular plants, fungi, fauna, and Emerald species with European importance are presented. Agro-biodiversity, structure of agriculture land, autochthonic breeds of domestic animals as well as the network of protected areas in Republic of Macedonia are presented. At the end conclusion remarks are given for future necessary activities at national and international level regarding monitoring and conservation of the biodiversity.

Laboratory Findings in Twins Suffering from Autism—Case Report

Autism refers a wide range of conditions and the most prominent are challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech disturbances. By now, it is known that there is no one type of autism, but there are many of them which are caused by genetic factors and environmental influences. Sometimes autism is called autism spectrum disorders which reflect the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism (e.g., gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, anxiety etc.). Around one third of all people with autism remain nonverbal and have an intellectual disability. This condition can be detected as early as 18 months, but the most obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. Only early intervention in those patients can improve outcomes. There are no many articles published regarding laboratory findings in autism patients. By performing holistic approach in patient healing, we also face autistic children in everyday practice. In this paper we represented case of twins suffering from autism. We found that both of them had elevation of free triiodothyronine, oxytocin, osteocalcin, and basophils. We found that vitamin D level in both twins was lower than recommended. Further research in this field is necessary to reveal whether these findings are causal factors for autism or are an effect of the disease.

＜正＞This paper presents an analytical and computer aided procedure for the multicriterion design optimization of planetary gear trains based on min-max approach. Further possibilities of min-max method are proposed. Geometric and operating constraints for gears and whole planetary gear trains and objective functions are defined. A computer program is developed and tested. The results confirm the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
