Peribulbar anesthesia in 750 patients treated with oral anticoagulants

AIM: To check the safety of continuation of oral anticoagulants in ophthalmic procedures requiring a peribulbar anesthesia. ·METHODS: A prospective case control study included 750 patients with oral anticoagulants in group A and 750 patients who had never been treated with oral anticoagulant in group b. Hemorrhages were graded as follows: 1) spot ecchymosis of eyelid and or subconjunctival hemorrhage; 2) eyelid ecchymosis involving half of the lid surface area; 3) eyelid ecchymosis all around the eye,no increase in intraocular pressure; 4) retrobulbar hemorrhage with increased intraocular pressure. ·RESULTS: In group A,grade 1 was observed in 13 patients(1.74%) and grade 2 in 2 patients(0.26%). In group b,grade 1 was observed in 12 patients(1.6%) and grade 2 was absent. No 3 or 4 hemorrhage grade was encountered in both groups. There was not significant difference in grade 1 hemorrhage between both groups(P =0.21). ·CONCLUSION: Oral anticoagulants were not associated with a significant increase in potentially sight-threatening local anesthetic complications.

Red mud is a type of highly alkaline waste residue produced in the process of alumina smelting by the bayer *** on the idea of medium calcium content,solid wastes such as red mud and fly ash were used to prepare non-burnt bricks;and the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was selected in the range of 0.88–*** properties and durability were investigated with a compressive strength test.X-ray diffractometry(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)techniques were used to characterize the hydration *** environmental performance was analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry(ICP).The results indicated that the mechanical properties and the durability were optimal when the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was *** hydration products were mostly C–S–H gel,ettringite,Na4Ca(Si10All6)O32·12H2O and Ca3Al2(SiO4)(OH)*** were responsible for the strength development,and the CaO/SiO2 mass ratio of 1.23 had the best polymerized *** results of an environmental performance test showed that the heavy metals in the raw materials were well-solidified in the ***,this paper provides an effective solution for use of solid wastes in building material.

Characteristics, Constraints and Perspectives of the Fish Farming in burundi

The fish farming was introduced in burundi in about 1950s. Actually, several fish ponds were abandoned and many others were still unproductive. This study aims to present current state and perspectives of the fish farming for its real contribution to the socio-economic development. The results presented are compilation of physical and chemical parameters series measured in fish ponds and inquiries led in 2010-2014 to the fish farmers in seven provinces （40% of the total area of the country）. Weak values of some physical and chemical parameters showed that the majority of ponds are badly maintained. Thus, the dissolved oxygen values varied between 0.2 mg/L and 3.5 mg/L. The high relinquishment rate of the fish fanning （between 40% and 67% according to the provinces） could be explained by many constraints： no centers of fish farming breeding for various fish species and no production center of complete foods with local sub-products. About 75% of fish famers confirmed that they have never benefited framing in fish fanning. In spite of the diverse constraints, burundi has a dense rivers system with favorable physical and chemical parameters and many appropriate sites for the fish farming. Thus, the main suggestions concern the sector reorganization.

Influence of CYP2b6 516G > T and Long Term HAART on Population Pharmacokinetics of Efavirenz in Rwandan Adults on HIV and Tuberculosis Cotreatment

Aim: To describe the pharmacokinetic parameters of efavirenz and estimate its clearance (CL/F) accounting simultaneously for drug-drug interactions and CYP2b6 genetic polymorphism. Methods: Genotyping of 516G > T single nucleotide polymorphism of CYP2b6 was performed using a PCR-based technology and plasma efavirenz concentrations were measured by high performance liquid chromatography on blood samples from 76 HIV adults co-infected with tuberculosis who had received an efavirenz-based regimen. Data were analyzed using population modeling with NONMEM. Results: The absorption rate constant and the apparent volume of distribution in the final model were 1.9 h-1 and 580 L/70kg, respectively. The CL/F at baseline was 11.8 L/h/70kg, 8.8 L/h/70kg and 3.9 L/h/70kg for patients carrying the G/G, G/T and T/T genotypes of CYP2b6 516G > T, respectively, in patients who were administered tuberculosis (Tb) treatment prior to HIV treatment (Group A);and 16.7 L/h/70kg, 10.6 L/h/70kg and 1.8 L/h/70kg for G/G, G/T and T/T genotype patients respectively, in patients with previous exposure to HIV treatment (Group b). The CL/F at baseline and steady state was always higher in Group b compared to Group A patients. Expectedly, carriers of CYP2b6 516G/G and T/T genotypes exhibited higher and lower CL/F, respectively. Conclusion: Our results indicated that the CL/F of efavirenz in the population studied was predictably different due to whether the patients were mono-treated for Tb with HAART deferred or for HIV before initiation of Tb therapy, and to CYP2b6 516G > T variant, implying that both CYP2b6 genetic polymorphisms and previous efavirenz-based HAART should be taken into account when adjusting efavirenz dose.

Theoretical DFT(b3LYP)/6-31+G(d) study on the prediction of the preferred interaction site of 3-methyl-4-pyrimidone with different proton donors

Theoretical calculations were carried out using the DFT/b3LYP/6-31+G(d) methodology in an attempt to predict the preferred interaction site of a polyfunctional heterocyclic base 3-methyl-4- pyrimidone molecule with a series of proton donors of different acidic strength, i.e. water, methanol, phenol, 1-naphtol, 2,4,5 trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, picric acid and hydrogen chlordide. Computed H-bond interaction energies (ΔEc), internuclear and intermolecular distances r(O…H) and r(O…O), infrared frequency shifts Δv(C=O) and (Δv(OH) are proved to be reliable parameters for predicting the preferred interaction site of 3-methyl-4-pyrimidone. These computational data suggest that the O-H…O=C complex is preferred with water, methanol, phenol, 1-naphtol, 2,4,5 trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. However, for H-bonding with stronger acids such as picric acid or hydrochloric acid, the computational data suggest that the H-bonding occurs at the N1 ring atom of 3-methyl-4-pyrimidone. In the O-H…O=C com- plex, where the H-bond at the carbonyl O-atom can be oriented “anti” (Ha) and “syn” (Hb) with respect to the N3 atom, the same computational data suggest a higher stability of the “anti-O” compared to the “syn-O” orientation.

Heavy Metal Fluxes in Tropical Urban Forest Soil in Abidjan District (Côte d’Ivoire)

In Western Africa, the growth of cities has led to natural resource pollution, especially air pollution. Urban forests play a key role in filtering atmospheric particles and pollutants through the canopy before reaching the soil. This study aims to quantify heavy metal fluxes in an urban forest in the district of Abidjan in order to assess its role in the protection of natural resources. A monitoring of wet deposition (throughfall and open field rain) and litterfall was carried out for six months in the urban forest of the National Floristic Center located in Abidjan, C?te d’Ivoire. The results show that the soil of this urban forest is a ferralsol type characterized by a sandy-clay texture and a low load of coarse elements. The annual litterfall is estimated to 12.16 ± 0.71 t·ha-1·yr-1, similar to other tropical forests. Annual quantities of rain and throughfall are in the range of the rainfall recorded in the district of Abidjan (2013 ± 152 and 1773 ± 51 mm). Chemical analyses showed that litter and rainfall contain Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Hg. Manganese and Zn are the most abundant elements and Hg the least abundant in both rainfall and litter. The main source of input of the heavy metals into the urban forest soil is associated with biological recycling through the litter. The litterfall contributes to metal fluxes in soil 109 times greater than metal fluxes carry by wet depositions (open field rain and throughfall). However, a detailed study of rainfall showed that the forest canopy constitutes a barrier for the transfer of heavy metal to urban soil. Diet breadth variation and trophic plasticity behavior of the African bonytongue <i>Heterotis niloticus</i>(Cuvier, 1829) in the SôRiver-Lake Hlan aquatic system (benin, West Africa): Implications for species conservation and aquaculture development

The African bonytongue, Heterotis niloticus (Pisces: Osteoglossidae), is an omnivore foraging mainly on aquatic insects, microcrustacea, seeds and detritus. We examined the diet breadth and the trophic plasticity behavior of this species (1461 specimens) in the S? River and Lake Hlan water system located in the southern benin (West Africa). Overall, the mean diet breadths of the two populations of Heterotis from both habitats were not significantly (p ≥ 0.05) different and were not associated with seasons. However, in Lake Hlan, mean diet breadths tended to increase with size (r = 0.81) and gut length (r = 0.82) indicating that bonytongues ingest a broader range of food resources as they grow. In both habitats, the positive correlation of both standard length (Log SL) and gut length (Log GL) with the volumetric proportions of detritus and with the volumetric proportions of seeds suggests that the consumption of these two food resources increased with the size of Heterotis and with the development of the digestive tract. Likewise, the negative correlation of both (Log SL) and (Log GL) with the volumetric proportions of aquatic insects and with the volumetric proportions of microcrustacea suggests that the consumption of these two food categories decreased as the size and the gut length of Heterotis increased. The differences in the consumption of microcrustacea (13.77% in Lake Hlan versus 2.63% in S? River) and mollusks (0.73% in Lake Hlan versus 4.91% in S? River) evidenced that Heterotis shifts his trophic structure according to resource availlability in the habitat. This foraging behavior suggests a degree of trophic plasticity in Heterotis. The specialized morphological structure of Heterotis, mainly the presence of a relatively high number of gill rakers (42 - 94 rakers on the first branchial arch) during its whole life, allowing sieving of zooplankton and other microcrustacea, and the presence of the gizzard favored this trophic plasticity.
