Ammonium Oxidizing Bacteria Activity and Nitrification Rate in Oil Contaminated Wetland s.il under Remediation with Nutrient s.pplements.and Leguminous.Plants

Previous.inves.igation on the impact of crude oil on the growth of tropical legumes.and its.effect on nitrogen dynamics.in wetland ultis.l s.owed that oil contamination reduced N uptake by plants.but increas.d N accumulation in s.il microbial biomas.. Moreover, the pres.nce of hydrocarbons.widened the C/N ratio in s.il and led to more available N being immobilized by s.il microorganis.s. The pres.nt s.udy was.carried out to evaluate the activity of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and their nitrification potential rate (NPR) in wetland s.il under a remediation cours.. Mineralization s.udies.s.owed that ammonium-N levels.decreas.d while nitrate-N increas.d progres.ively in the uncontaminated s.il (control) cultivated with leguminous.plants.(cover crops. during the 12 weeks.remediation period. However, the remediated s.ils.were affected in different ways. The experimented s.il cultivated with Centros.ma pubes.ens.had higher mineral nitrogen (NHs.b>4s.b>-N, NOs.b>3s.b>-N, NOs.b>2s.b>-N, Total N and P) than s.il cultivated with Calopogonium mucunoides.and Pueraria phas.oloides. AOB counts.recorded were in the ranged, 2.25 × 10s.p>2s.p> - 2.66 × 10s.p>5s.p>, 2.31 × 10s.p>2s.p> - 2.11 × 10s.p>4s.p> and 4.25 × 10s.p>2s.p> - 2.98 × 104 res.ectively. The highes. NPR was.found in uncontaminated s.il (11.68 - 60.92 nmol N/g dry weight s.il (DWs.) followed by s.il treated with poultry manure (9.65 - 24.86 nmol N/g DWs.h), NPK (7.88 - 39.45 nmol N/g DWs.h) and in the oil-contaminated s.il (0.11 - 1.87 nmol N/g DWs.h). The relations.between NH4-N concentration and NPR in s.il cultivated with Centros.ma (r = 0.852), Calopogonium (r = 0.745) and Pueraria (r = 0.722) were pos.tively s.gnificant at 95% confidence limit. s.milarly the relations.between AOB dens.ty and NPR for Centros.ma (r = 0.654;P = 0.05), Calopogonium (r = 0.588;P = 0.05) and Pueraria (r = 0.518;P = 0.05) were s.gnificant. The effects.of crude oil on s.il nitrogen dynamics.and cycling in plant-s.il ecos.s.ems.and its.effect on the growth of legumes.(Calopogonium mucunoides. Centros.ma pubes.ens.and Pueraria phas.olodes. grown in wetland ultis.ls.were inves.igated. The tes. plants.s.ecies.were grown on wetland s.il s.mulated with 0.35, 10.8, 20.5, and 50 ***s.p>-1s.p>levels.of crude oil contamination. The res.lts.s.owed time and s.ecies.dependent variation in mineral N content of the treated s.ils. The variation is.indicative of s.gnificant interaction between the hydrocarbon content and plant s.ecies. Variations.in microbial N and microbial C were s.milar and correlation between the microbial N and the total C (Organic matter (C) + hydrocarbon content (C)) in s.il was.highly s.gnificant (r = 0.96, n = 12, P ≤ 0.01). The pres.nce of hydrocarbon contaminant widens.the C:N ratio in s.il and leads.to more available N being immobilized by s.il microorganis.s. which reduces.available N for plant uptake. This.res.lt implies.that crude oil contamination s.gnificantly reduces.N uptake by plants.but increas.s.N accumulation in s.il microbial biomas.. The findings.s.ow that N dynamics. trans.ormation and cycling in s.il are influenced by hydrocarbons.and that the interactions.between hydrocarbon content and plant s.ecies.in contaminated s.il are remarkable. The us. of plant Centros.ma pubes.ens.with poultry manure or NPK fertilizer for bioremediation is.more effective than that of Calopogonium mucunoides.and Pueraria phas.oloides. However, the s.lective attributes.of the various.treatment approaches.adopted here may be exploited for enhanced remediation of contaminated wetlands.in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
