Increased P wave duration in patients with depression or anxiety disorder

BACKGROUND： Activation of the sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in regulating cardiovascular actions. P wave parameters can provide general information on central cardiovascular autonomic regulatory responses, which are altered in patients with anxiety disorders and depression. In particular, there are no reports addressing changes in P wave duration and dispersion. OBJECTIVE： To compare the differences in P wave duration and P wave dispersion between patients with anxiety disorders and depression, because patients with anxiety disorders and depression develop abnormal electrocardiograms. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A non-randomized concurrent controlled study was performed. Patients with depression and general anxiety disorders were admitted at the psychiatry outpatient clinics of the Medical Faculty of Duezce University of Turkey between May 2005 and October 2006. PARTICIPANTS： A total of 71 consecutive patients with depression and anxiety disorders, as well as 50 physically and mentally healthy age- and gender-matched controls were selected. METHODS： Electrocardiogram records were obtained at the time of admission to the outpatient clinics. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： P wave duration and P wave dispersion were measured. RESULTS： Both the maximum （Prnax） and minimum （Pmin） P wave duration were greater in patients with psychiatric disorders than in healthy controls. Pmax was significantly greater in patients with depression or anxiety disorders （Bonferroni test, P 〈 0.017）. The P wave dispersion was similar between patients and controls （P 〉 0.017）. P waves were similar between panic patients and other anxiety patients. Beck depression results were positively correlated with Prawn and Prnax （r= 0.374, 0.302, P = 0.013, 0.049, respectively）, and not associated with P wave dispersion （P 〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Psychiatric disorders are associated with increases in Prnax, but not with P wave dispersion. The P wave changes were associated with the degree of depr

Antioxidant and ntiinflammatory efficacy of curcumin on lung tissue in rats with sepsis

New treatment modalities in Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is still a major public health challenge without an effective treatment to prevent or stop it. Routinely used acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine seem to slow disease progression only to a limited extend. Therefore, many investigations on new drugs and other treatment modalities are ongoing in close association with increasing knowledge of the pathophysiology of the disease. Here, we review the studies about the new treatment modalities in AD with a classification based on their main targets, specifically pathologic structures of the disease, amyloid and tau, neural network dysfunction with special interest to the regulation of gamma oscillations, and attempts for the restoration of neural tissue via regenerative medicine. Additionally, we describe the evolving modalities related to gut microbiota, modulation, microglial function, and glucose metabolism.

Association of apolipoprotein E-219T>G promoter polymorphism with primary open angle glaucoma in Turkish population

AIM:To investigate the association between apolipoprotein E(APOE)-219 T>G promoter polymorphism and primary open angle glaucoma(POAG).METHODS:Patients and healthy subjects were genotyped with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP).Genotype/allele frequencies were compared between 122 healthy subjects and in 75 POAG patients using Chi-square ***:Although the frequency of APOE-219 GG genotype was higher in POAG group(13.3%)than in control group(6.6%),this finding was not statistically significant(P=0.09).In glaucoma patients carrying GG genotype,mean linear C/D ratio was higher and progression was more compared to glaucoma patients with GT ***:APOE-219 T>G polymorphism does not seem to be a risk factor for the presence of glaucoma,but might play a role in deterioration of the disease,which needs further evaluation.

Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry of BN Films Deposited on Steels by Remote Microwave Plasma CVD from Borazine

The diffuse reflectance Fourier trmisfonn infrared spectra of the boron nitride(BN)films deposited on steels by remote microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition(CVD)from borazine with nitrogen,hydrogen and argon were investigated in the wavenumber range of 400-4000 cm^(-1).It was found that the cubic BN for million depends on production of the intermediate species of cyclo triborazane((BH2NH2)3)and its *** structuml bonds of cydotriborazane are similar to that of cubic *** conditions for deposited BN films were found to be the bora,zine-nitrogen mixture at the substrate *** of 550℃.The BN films were n mixture of crystalline cubic BN accounting for the major content and hexagonal BN with relatively low hydrogen content.

Hemoglobin cut-off values in healthy Turkish infants

Background:Anemia is a widespread public health problem associated with an increased risk of morbidity and *** study was undertaken to determine the cut-off value of hemoglobin for infant ***:A cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out at well-baby clinics of a tertiary care hospital.A total of 1484 healthy infants aged between 4 to 24 months were included in the *** relationship of hemoglobin(Hb)levels with mother age,birth weight,weight gain rate,feeding,and gender was ***:The Hb levels were assessed in four age groups(4 months,6 months,9-12 months,and 15-24 months)and the cut-off values of Hb were *** cut-off values(5th percentile for age)were detected as 97 g/L and 93 g/L at 4 months and 6 months,*** older infants,the 5th percentile was 90.5 g/L and 93.4 g/L at 9-12 months and 15-24 months,*** two values were lower than the World Health Organization criteria for anemia,which could partly due to the lack of information on iron status in our ***,this difference highlights the need for further studies on normal Hb levels in healthy infants in developing *** levels of females were higher in all age groups;however,a statistically significant difference was found in gender in only 6 month-old *** statistically significant difference was found among Hb levels,mother's age,birth weight,weight gain rate,and nutritional ***:Hb cut-off values in infants should be re-evaluated and be compatible with growth and development of children in that community.

Elevated serum neopterin levels in children with functional constipation: association with systemic proinflammatory cytokines

Background Functional constipation is a clinical problem with an incompletely understood etiology. Functional bowel diseases have been shown to be related to inflammation in many studies in adults. In this study, we aimed to evaluate leuko-cytes, C-reactive protein, proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and neopterin levels in children with functional constipation. Methods Seventy-six children with constipation and 71 healthy controls (mean age 7.12 ± 3.46 years and 7.32 ± 4.33 years, respectively, P = 0.991) were included in the study. Leukocytes, C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and neopterin levels were assessed in patients and healthy controls. Parameters were measured in the serum using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. Results Mean IL-6 (20.31 ± 12.05 vs. 16.2 ± 10.25 pg/mL, respectively, P = 0.003), IL-12 (181.42 ± 133.45 vs. 135.6 ± 83.67 pg/mL, respectively, P = 0.018) and neopterin levels (2.08 ± 1.12 vs. 1.52 ± 1.02 pg/mL, respectively, P = 0.001) were significantly higher in constipated children than healthy controls. Leukocyte and thrombocyte counts, C-reactive protein, and IL-1β, IL-10 and TNF-α levels did not show any difference between the two groups. Conclusions In this study, IL-6, IL-12 and neopterin levels of constipated patients were found to be higher than those of controls. These results indicate the presence of subclinical inflammation in children with functional constipation.

Investigation of synergistic antibacterial effect of organic acids and ultrasound against pathogen biofilms on lettuce

The aim of this study was to investigate the inactivation effect of organic acids and ultrasound against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes biofilms on the surface of lettuce leaves and to determine the effect of these inactivation treatments on the quality characteristics of the *** leaves with biofilms formed following inoculation with *** and *** were treated individually or simultaneously with ultrasound and different organic acids(acetic acid,malic acid,citric acid and lactic acid)for periods of 10,30 and 60 *** treatments caused synergistic and antagonistic inactivation of pathogen *** addition,the anti-biofilm effect of combined treatments was found to be higher compared with a single *** an increase in treatment time from 10 min to 60 min,biofilm detachment rate was increased on the surface of the *** reduction in *** and *** biofilms varied from 0.43 to 5.54 log CFU/cm^(2) and from 0.40 to 4.23 log CFU/cm^(2),*** acid and malic acid showed stronger anti-biofilm activities than the other organic *** these results indicate that biofilm inactivation on lettuce samples depends on target microbial species,the type of organic acid,the treatment time,and ***,decontamination treatments for 60 min did not adversely affect the colour,texture or sensory quality of the *** conclusion,the combined treatment of ultrasound and organic acid is suggested as a promising hurdle technology in order to remove pathogen biofilms from fresh produce.

Mineralogy of Holocene Sediments from the Southwestern Black Sea Shelf(Turkey)in Relation to Provenance,Sea-level and Current Regimes

Grain size and mineral composition of core sediments were used to investigate influences of various terrestrial and marine conditions,which have prevailed on the southwestern Black Sea shelf during the *** mud with small amounts of sand and gravel from nearby coastal hinterland is the principal sediment type,whereas sediments deposited near the shelf edge and the Istanbul Strait and off the Duru Lake(a paleo-river mouth)constitued large quantities of sand and gravel of both biogenic and terrigenic *** amounts of aragonite,1 nmmicas,quartz,feldspars,calcite and dolomite constitute the dominant non-clay minerals in bulk *** clay mineral assemblage in the〈2μm fraction is made up of smectite,illite,kaolinite and *** and calcite are mainly derived from benthic accumulations,whereas feldspars(mainly plagioclase)and smectite reflect magmaticvolcanic provenance and the distribution of 1 nm-micas and chlorite correlate with nearby metamorphic sources ***,grain size and mineral distribution generally indicate a combination of effects of wind and wave climate,longshore and offshore cyclonic currents,changing sea-level stands and nearby source rock and morphological *** is also suggested that at least part of clay minerals could be derived from the northwesterly Danube River input.

Role of public space design on the perception of historical environment:A pilot study in Amasya

The experience,perception,awareness,and appreciation of the environment created by public spaces are important elements of urban *** this context,a strong link exists between perception,public spaces,and historical *** is one of the multilayered historical cities in ***’s holistic urban texture,close relationship with the river,and public spaces are associated with both the Iris River and the historical *** pilot study examines the Yalıboyu Promenade,a contemporary open public space designed along the river and across the historical texture in Amasya in Turkey to reveal how it affects people’s perception of the historical *** study uses the mixed method approach,which includes qualitative and quantitative *** the theoretical discussion,the study investigates the context of the *** survey results revealed how the firsttime visitors had perceived the historical texture of the promenade based on Rapoport’s method of using environmental *** results were interpreted by jointly evaluating qualitative and survey ***,although some aspects need improvement,the promenade solidifies the perception of the historical ***,when the public space is integrated with the historical environment and public life,it offers multidimensional contributions that cannot be ***,examining the promenade from perceptual aspects and offering a design approach to promote integration with the historical environment may help to establish a precedent case for future initiatives.
