Hybrid Vigour and Genetic Control of Some Quantitative Traits of Tomato (<i>Solanum lycopersicum</i>L.)

Parental lines, F1 generation of domesticated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium L. were evaluated at Department of Crop Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka for improvement in their quantitative traits. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were collected on the quantitative traits and fruit yield. Better Parent Heterosis (BPH), genetic variances, gene effects and heritability of the traits were estimated for the hybrids. BPH result showed that the Wild × Petomech cross had the highest positive BPH of 358.36% in fruit yield. The highest negative BPH of -95.59% was recorded for the hybrid, Wild × Grosso in average fruit weight while the hybrid, Insulata × Grosso had the lowest negative BPH of -16.27% in average fruit weight. Additive gene action and additive × additive gene action (aa) were significantly in control of three crosses, W × P, W × In and W × G in fruit yield. Additive variance was higher than dominance variance in fruit yield for all the hybrids with wild as one of its parents. Again, hybrids with wild as one of its parent as, W × G, W × In, and W × P had the highest narrow sense heritability in fruit yield (59.15%, 51.69%, 59.88%, respectively). High level of epistasis controlled some of the quantitative traits and hybridization evidenced by the result was effective in developing new tomato cultivars with positive heterotic effects in fruit yield.

The paper assessed the land cover change in Gashaka-Gumti National Park between 1991 and 2021. To achieve this, LandSat data of years 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 were obtained from the United States Geological Survey online resource. The findings of the study revealed that there is decrease in the different land cover types over time as a result of anthropogenic activities of the enclave dwellers. The study observed that the continuous existence of enclaves within and around the Park constitutes a serious threat to the survival of the Park. The study recommended that the federal government should consider resettlement of the enclave dwellers to give way for the development of the Park.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of the natural diterpenoid, hypoestoxide (HE) on the growth of established colon cancer in mice. METHODS: The *** mouse colon carcinoma cell line was grown and expanded in vitro. Following the expansion, BALB/c mice were inoculated s.c. with viable tumor cells. After the tumors had established and developed to about 80-90 mm3, the mice were started on chemotherapy by oral administration of HE, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or combination. RESULTS: The antiangiogenic HE has previously been shown to inhibit the growth of melanoma in the B16F1 tumor model in C57BL/6 mice. Our results demonstrate that mean volume of tumors in mice treated with oral HE as a single agent or in combination with 5-FU, were significantly smaller (> 60%) than those in vehicle control mice (471.2 mm3 vs 1542.8 mm3, P < 0.01). The significant reductions in tumor burden resulted in pronounced mean survival times (MST) and increased life spans (ILS) in the treated mice. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that HE is an effective chemotherapeutic agent for colorectal cancer in mice and that HE may be used alone or in combination with 5-FU.

The Niger Delta marine environment has experienced a series of environmental disasters since the inception of oil and gas exploration,which can be attributed to climate *** dioxide(CO_(2))emissions and sea surface temperature(T)ties associated with burning fossil fuels,such as gas flaring,vehicular traffic,and marine vessel movement along the sea,are *** data extracted from the NASA Giovanni satellite’s Atmospheric Infrared Sounder(AIRS)and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS),this study mapped the carbon footprint and T along the coastline into the deep sea from 2003 to 2011,using ArcGIS *** spatial distribution of CO_(2) and T concentrations determined by the inverse distance weighting(IDW)method reveals variations in the study *** results show an increase in the quantity of the mean tropospheric CO_(2) from July 2003 to December 2011,from 374.5129 ppm to 390.7831 ppm annual CO_(2) emissions,which also reflects a continuous *** average Monthly sea surface temperature had a general increasing trend from 25.79℃ in July 2003 to 27.8°C in December,with the Pearson correlation coefficient between CO_(2) and T indicating 50%strongly positive,20%strongly negative,20%weakly positive,and 10%weakly ***_(2) levels,like temperature,follow a seasonal cycle,with a decrease during the wet season due to precipitation dissolving and plant uptake during the growing season,and then a rise during the dry *** capture and storage technologies must be implemented to benefit the marine ecosystem and human well-being.

The main treatment strategy for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is averting the use of oxidative precipitants like drugs or foods that trigger haemolysis. However, subjects could experience acute crisis in a comorbidity state of diabetes, hypertension or infection. In addition, the condition could in turn predispose carriers to these chronic diseases. Aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of haemolytic crisis in carriers with attendant chronic diseases, and also assess awareness and knowledge of aggravated reactions from these conditions. 282 subjects consented and participated in the study. A cross-sectional semi-structured interview questionnaire conducted from May to August 2013 was adopted. Questions focused on demographics, awareness and when disease was diagnosed, type and frequency of crisis, family history, screening and presence of other diseases and awareness of trigger from these conditions. A total of 69.9% were G6PD deficiency gene carriers and mostly fell within the age group of 31 - 40 (43.6%). 75.6% of the carriers were not aware that other disease conditions could exacerbate crisis. Non-drug related crisis was 85.3% compared with 14.7 drug related reactions. Out of the 69.9% carriers, 17.3% are diabetics, 18.3% of them are hypertensive and 25.9% are with bleeding disorders. Also, 29.1% had frequent episodes with bacterial infection. Symptoms experienced that were not drug related included, 44.8% attacks of pallor, 25.3% jaundice, 28.5% with shortness of breath, while 21.7% had dark urine frequently. No routine screening for other diseased conditions was carried out for these subjects despite experiencing frequent crisis that were not drug related. Carriers with other diseased conditions experienced more non-drug related crisis and were not aware of it.

E-voting (electronic voting) is a significant part of an E-election (electronic election), which refers to the use of computers or computerized voting equipment to cast ballots in an election. Due to the rapid growth of computer technologies and advances in cryptographic techniques, E-voting is now an applicable alternative for many non-governmental elections. However, security demands are paramount to electoral process in political arena. It was revealed that researchers show little interest in robustness of E-voting system compared to other E-voting requirements [1]. This paper shows that RSA (Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman) cryptography algorithm can be incorporated into E-voting process as a whole. The RSA cryptography algorithm ensures that votes casted are secured, thus maintaining the privacy of votes. The performance of the cryptography algorithm is tested on a university E-voting system over a public network. The E-voting process is initiated by a server system that other computer nodes are connected to. The system is such that when the votes are cast on the nodes, the RSA technique encrypts the vote that is sent to the server system using both node and vote identity number. The system performs consistently and reliably which in return gives good level of confidence of votes count.

Effects of planting dates, densities, and varieties on ecophysiology of pigeonpea in the Southeastern United States

Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] is an important legume crop widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical climates of the world. Interest in this crop is growing in many countries because of its multiple uses as a source of food, feed, fuel, and fertilizer. However, the performance of pigeonpea in Southeastern US has not been well investigated. We conducted an experiment in Nashville, Tennessee to test the effects of two planting dates, three densities, and four varieties on pigeonpea ecophysiology that included leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, water use efficiency (WUE), leaf area index (LAI) and soil respiration. Results indicated that the plants in the late planting plots had higher photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration. There were significant differences in the levels of leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, WUE and LAI among all four varieties. W3 and G1 showed higher photosynthetic rate and LAI than W1, and W3 had higher WUE than G2 and W1. Planting densities had no significant effect on all variables studied. This study indicated that late planting of variety G1 or W3 resulted in higher WUE and yield, but did no significant influence soil CO2 emission.
