The hydropower sector is currently experiencing several technological developments.New technologies and practices are emerging to make hydropower more flexible and more sustainable.Novel materials have also been recently developed to increase performance,durability,and reliability;however,no systematic discussions can be found in the literature.Therefore,in this paper,novel materials for hydropower applications are presented,and their performance,advantages,and limitations are discussed.For example,composites can reduce the weight of steel equipment by 50%to 80%,polymers and superhydrophobic materials can reduce head losses by 4%to 20%,and novel bearing materials can reduce bearing wear by 6%.These improvements determine higher efficiencies,longer life span,waste reduction,and maintenance needs,although the initial cost of some materials is not yet competitive with respect to the costs of traditional materials.The novel materials are described here based on the following categories:novel materials for turbines,dams and waterways,bearings,seals,and ocean hydropower.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the most difficult complication following total joint arthroplasty. Most of the etiological strains, accounting for over 98% of PJI, are bacterial species, with Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase-negative staphylococci present in between 50% and 60% of all PJIs. Fungi, though rare, can also cause PJI in 1%—2% of cases and can be challenging to manage. The management of this uncommon but complex condition is challenging due to the absence of a consistent algorithm. Diagnosis of fungal PJI is difficult as isolation of the organisms by traditional culture may take a long time, and some of the culture-negative PJI can be caused by fungal organisms. In recent years, the introduction of next-generation sequencing has provided opportunity for isolation of the infective organisms in culture-negative PJI cases. The suggested treatment is based on consensus and includes operative and non-operative measures. Two-stage revision surgery is the most reliable surgical option for chronic PJI caused by fungi. Pharmacological therapy with antifungal agents is required for a long period of time with antibiotics and included to cover superinfections with bacterial species. The aim of this review article is to report the most up-to-date information on the diagnosis and treatment of fungal PJI with the intention of providing clear guidance to clinicians, researchers and surgeons.

To sustain the transition to a greener economy and greener manufacturing,it is necessary to develop new approaches and technologies to repair metal components;this will result in a drastic reduction in energy and material usage.In this study,wire arc additive manufacturing(WAAM)was used to deposit a layer of new material on an existing surface,with the objective of finding the optimal configuration that maximized the layer quality and material efficiency.The parameters considered are the stepover among the deposited beads and the inclination of the torch with respect to the repaired surfaces.The inclination angle is crucial when repairing complex surfaces,like those of a mold,owing to accessibility issues,the torch cannot be maintained orthogonal to the surfaces along the entire toolpath.Different configurations were tested in order to assess the quality of the materials in terms of the presence of material voids,depth of penetration,and the heat affected zone(HAZ)and to understand the effects of these variables on the material efficiency and thickness of the repairing layer.It should be noted that by adopting deposition parameters set to have a low heat input,the use of a tilting angle has beneficial effects on the quality of the deposited layer and the process efficiency.Metallurgical and geometrical measurements were carried out to assess the effect of these two variables depositing a layer of plain carbon steel.

Recent progress in nanophotonics and material science has inspired a strong interest in optically-induced material dynamics,opening new research directions in the distinct fields of Floquet matter and time metamaterials.Floquet phenomena are historically rooted in the condensed matter community,as they exploit periodic temporal drives to unveil novel phases of matter,unavailable in systems at equilibrium.In parallel,the field of metamaterials has been offering a platform for exotic wave phenomena based on tailored materials at the nanoscale,recently enhanced by incorporating time variations and switching as new degrees of freedom.In this Perspective,we connect these research areas and describe the exciting opportunities emerging from their synergy,hinging on giant wave-matter interactions enabled by metamaterials and on the exotic wave dynamics enabled by Floquet and parametric phenomena.We envision Floquet metamaterials in which nontrivial modulation dynamics,and their interplay with tailored material dispersion and nontrivial material properties such as anisotropy,non-Hermiticity and nonreciprocity,introduce a plethora of novel opportunities for wave manipulation and control.

The coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)has greatly affected the overall health of the elderly population through direct biological(infection-related)and indirect psychosocial(quarantine-and isolation-related)effects.Because the severe form of COVID-19 most frequently targets this population,the prevalence of long-term sequelae is expected to rise consequentially in people≥65 years old.The prominent neuropsychiatric consequences of COVID-19 and the cognitive frailty seen in older adults can both have a negative impact on their mental health.To explore the behavioral,neurological,and psychosocial consequences of COVID-19,we conducted separate studies on different populations of older adult people residing in Lombardy-the Italian epicenter of the first pandemic wave in spring 2020.

Restrictive measures adopted worldwide against COVID19(e.g.,wearing masks,frequent hand washing,and social distancing)produced not only a decrease in SARS-CoV-2 difusion but also a drastic reduction in respiratory diseases caused by other pathogens,as reported by many authors[1,2].The spread of respiratory viruses,particularly respiratory syncytial virus(RSV),has been completely changed during the winter of 2020–2021[3,4],but an unusual resurgence of RSV infection has been recently reported in diferent countries[3-7].

Limbal stem cell deficiency(LSCD)causes severe vision impairment and can lead to blindness,representing one of the most challenging ocular surface disorders.Stem cell deficiency can be congenital or,more often,acquired.The categorization of ocular surface transplantation techniques is crucial to achieving treatment homogeneity and quality of care,according to the anatomic source of the tissue being transplanted,genetic source,autologous or allogenic transplantation(to reflect histocompatibility in the latter group),and cell culture and tissue engineering techniques.The aim of this minireview is to provide a summary of the management of LSCD,from clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcomes to the development of novel therapeutic approaches.The manuscript also briefly summarizes recent findings in the current literature and outlines the future challenges to overcome in the management of the major types of ocular surface failure.

This paper proposes a deep-Q-network(DQN) controller for network selection and adaptive resource allocation in heterogeneous networks, developed on the ground of a Markov decision process(MDP) model of the problem. Network selection is an enabling technology for multi-connectivity, one of the core functionalities of 5G. For this reason, the present work considers a realistic network model that takes into account path-loss models and intra-RAT(radio access technology) interference. Numerical simulations validate the proposed approach and show the improvements achieved in terms of connection acceptance, resource allocation, and load balancing.In particular, the DQN algorithm has been tested against classic reinforcement learning one and other baseline approaches.
