Novel neuroprotective and hepatoprorective effects of citric acid in acute malathion intoxication

Objective: To study the effect of citric acid given alone or combined with atropine on brain oxidative stress, neuronal injury, liver damage, and DNA damage of peripheral blood lymphocytes induced in the rat by acute malathion exposure. methods: Rats were received intraperitoneal(i.p.) injection of malathion 150 mg/kg along with citric acid(200 or 400 mg/kg, orally), atropine(1 mg/kg, i.p.) or citric acid 200 mg/kg+atropine 1 mg/kg and euthanized 4 h later. Results: malathion resulted in increased lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde) and nitric oxide concentrations accompanied with a decrease in brain reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase(GPx) activity, total antioxidant capacity(TAC) and glucose concentrations. Paraoxonase-1, acetylcholinesterase(ACh E) and butyrylcholinesterase activities decreased in brain as well. Liver aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities were raised. The Comet assay showed increased DNA damage of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Histological damage and increased expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS) were observed in brain and liver. Citric acid resulted in decreased brain lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide. meanwhile, glutathione, GPx activity, TAC capacity and brain glucose level increased. Brain ACh E increased but PON1 and butyrylcholinesterase activities decreased by citric acid. Liver enzymes, the percentage of damaged blood lymphocytes, histopathological alterations and i NOS expression in brain and liver was decreased by citric acid. meanwhile, rats treated with atropine showed decreased brain mDA, nitrite but increased GPx activity, TAC, ACh E and glucose. The drug also decreased DNA damage of peripheral blood lymphocytes, histopathological alterations and i NOS expression in brain and liver. Conclusions: The study demonstrates a beneficial effect for citric acid upon brain oxidative stress, neuronal injury, liver and DNA damage due to acute malathion exposure.

Aim: To examine the association between individual components of metabolic syndrome (metS) and bone mineral density (BmD) among postmenopausal women. methods: A total of 177 postmenopausal women participated in a cross-sectional study. They were interviewed to collect anthropometric and demographic characteristics. BmD was measured and biochemical parameters were estimated in fasting blood samples. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the association between individual components of metS and BmD. Results: Among 177 postmenopausal women, 116 (66%) had metS. Women with metS had significantly higher mean values of BmD and T scores at the total hip (P mpared to women without metS, which disappeared after adjustment for body weight, but not for age (P metS other than waist circumference were not significantly related to BmD values at the three skeletal sites, except for diastolic blood pressure association with BmD at the femoral neck (r = 0.150, P mD at the total hip was also positively associated with both of triglycerides (r = 0.157, P mD at the 3 skeletal sites according to metabolic states, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Conclusions: Body weight and osteocalcin were more strongly associated with bone mass than any other component of metS in postmenopausal women. However, further studies seem to be needed to confirm their observation.

Objective Triple negative breast cancer(TNBC) contains a high proportion of breast cancer stem cells(BCSCs) and exhibits resistance to chemotherapy treatments. Therefore, the identification of BCSCs that are novel molecular targets may improve patient survival. Aldehyde dehydrogenase-1(ALDH 1 A1) has been considered a cancer stem cell marker in different tumors. Caveolin-1(Cav-1), a membrane transporter protein, regulates cancer chemo-resistance and stem cell signaling. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of ALDH 1 A1 and Cav-1 in patients with TNBC by immunohistochemistry(IHC) and to correlate their expression with clinical and pathological *** Paraffin blocks of 30 breast cancer patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy between January 2013 and December 2016 in Zagazig University Hospitals(Egypt) were evaluated. Antibodies to ALDH 1 A1 and Cav-1 were used. Results ALDH 1 A1 and Cav-1 significantly correlated with tumor size. A significant association between ALDH 1 A1/Cav-1 IHC staining and relapse was found. Cav-1 and ALDH 1 A1-positive expression correlated with a short 3-year disease-free survival rate and a 3-year overall survival rate(P meters and shortened survival. Expression of both markers was significantly positively correlated with each other(P < 0.001). ALDH 1 A1 and Cav-1 could be potential therapeutic targets in breast cancer.

The Association between mycoplasma Species Infection and Tubal Obstruction

Objectives: Numerous factors can cause infertility. Tubal factor accounts for approximately 30% of infertility in females. This study was conducted to evaluate the rate of asymptomatic mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum infection in females diagnosed with tubal obstruction. methods: This is a retrospective case-control study conducted at New Life Fertility Centre. We have identified and reviewed the health records of 167 subfertile women that had HSG and an endocervical swab for mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum done. Results: We compared the endocervical swab results of ureaplasma and mycoplasma in the patients with tubal obstruction (group 1) to the patients with normal patent tubes (group 2). Diagnosis of tubal patency was based on the HSG results. Our results show that there is a significantly higher rate of Ureaplasma urealyticum/mycoplasma hominis infection in group 1 compared to group 2. Conclusion: Our data shows that there is a high rate of U. urealyticum and m. hominis infection in patients diagnosed with tubal factor of infertility and it can be a marker in the prediction of the tubal pathology.

Performance Assessment of Coded-Beam High Throughput Satellites

High-throughput satellite (HTS) systems usually make use of multibeam coverage at high frequency bands in order to offer broadband access of large areas. multibeam coverage increases the available capacity through frequency reuse and spatial separation. However, one of its major drawbacks is inter- spot interference which considered the motivation to propose a new approach using a coding technique to distinguish between beams that will be employed to mitigate this interference without the need of frequency reuse. This approach makes the use of orthogonal codes to identify beams and allow using the total satellite bandwidth per beam. Proposed system double the bandwidth used in each beam and save the usage of antenna polarization resource used in former designs, which may be used as a multiple accessing resource inside the coded beams. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive performance assessment methodology for the proposed approach. Result validation is introduced by comparing the proposed system performance with conventional systems that relay on the DVB standards.

AIm To investigate the clinical utility of serum annexin A2(ANXA2) as a diagnostic marker for early hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).mETHODS This study was performed in HCC Clinic of Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt and included: Group 1: Fifty patients with early stage HCC(Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A); Group 2: Twenty five patients with chronic liver disease; and Control Group: Fifteen healthy, age-and sex-matched subjects who were seronegative for viral hepatitis markers. The followinglaboratory investigations were done: Viral hepatitis markers [hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C virus(HCV) antibodies], HCV RNA in HCV antibody-positive patients, serum alpha fetoprotein(AFP), and serum ANXA2 *** In this study, 88% of HCC patients(n = 44) were HCVpositive, while HBV infection represented only 8% of all HCC patients(n = 4); and two patients were negative for both viral markers. A highly significant difference was found between patients with HCC and chronic liver disease as well as controls with regard to serum ANXA2 levels(130, IQR 15-240; 15, IQR 15-17; and 17, IQR 15-30 ng/m L, respectively). The area under the curve of ANXA2 was 0.865; the cut-off value was established to be 18 ng/mL with a diagnostic sensitivity of 74% and a specificity of 88%, while the sensitivity and specificity of AFP at the cut-off value of 200 ng/dL were 20% and 100%, *** Serum ANXA2 may serve as a biomarker for the early detection of HCC.

Background:The increasing occurrence of diabetes mellitus(Dm)noted worldwide has considerably elicited concern in the recent *** is associated with elevated vascular complications,morbidity,mortality,and poor quality of *** this context,mesenchymal stem cells(mSCs)have shown significant therapeutic potentialities in managing and curing type 1 Dm owing to their self-renewable,immunosuppressive,and differentiation *** investigated the potential action of N,N′-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine(DPPD),a well-known synthetic antioxidant to enhance the therapeutic ability of the adipose-derived stem cells(AD-mSCs)in alleviating kidney and liver complications in diabetic ***:Over the four weeks of experiments,albino male rats(n=36)were split into six test groups:control,DPPD(250 mg/kg,i.p.),STZ-diabetic(D),D+DPPD,D+AD-mSCs(1×10^(6)cell/rat,i.v.),and D+AD-mSCs+DPPD treated ***:Significant declines in the renal and hepatic oxidative stress markers(mDA,ROS,and AGEs)were observed coupled with a significant elevation in many antioxidant marker levels(GSH,SOD,CAT,GPx,HO-1,and TAC)in the diabetic rats treated with either DPPD or AD-mSCs or their co-administered injection compared to the diabetic untreated *** was suggested to be the leading cause of amelioration of the kidney functions(as measured by urea,uric acid,and creatine levels)and liver functions(as evidenced by the levels of AST,ALT,ALP,bilirubin,total proteins,albumin,and globulins).Conclusion:DPPD and AD-mSCs co-administration showed superior results in terms of the enhancement of the relative hepato-renal function,indicating the beneficial role of DPPD supplementation in increasing the therapeutic potential of AD-mSCs.

Objective:To evaluate the histochemical alterations in DNA and total carbohydrates,in colorectal cancer ***:This study was carried out on 48 colorectal carcinoma and 10 adenoma *** and Eosin staining was carried out for histopathological examination to confirm the diagnosis and to evaluate the histopathological characteristics of *** grade and pathologic stage was assessed according to TNm staging *** was also assessed according to original Dukes’staging *** was demonstrated by Feulgen method and carbohydrates were demonstrated by periodic acid Schiff’s ***:Adenoma cases showed that the cells lining the glands of the polyp have more crowded,irregular and darker nuclei(hyperchromatic),anisonucleosis,abnormal mitotic figures with prominent nucleoli and variability in the size and shape of *** carcinoma cases showed a condensation and reduction in the size of a cell nucleus associated with hyperchromatosis,pyknotic nuclei,abnormal mitotic figures,anisonucleosis,irregular nuclear membrane and inequality in the size of the nuclei(Pleomorphosis).There was a statistical significant differences between adenoma and carcinoma regarding number of mitotic cells(P=0.03)that was in favour of malignant *** and colorectal carcinoma cases showed periodic acid Schiff’s reactivity with different ***:These histochemical alterations can be so characteristic of a given tumor type and stage that they are used in cancer diagnosis and might also be related to the altered functional properties of cancer cells.
