Cancers in the Elderly Seen in Anatomical Pathology Laboratory in Lomé, Togo

Background: The elderly cancers are worldwide a major public health issue. Their exact incidence is unknown in Togo. The purpose of this study was to describe epidemiological and histological data of cancers in the elderly in Togo. materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study of cases of elderly cancers diagnosed at the laboratory of pathology of the university teaching hospital of Lomé from 1995 to 2014 (20 years). Cases of examination on samples of the elderly (biopsy, excision, surgical specimens) were collected from the data records of that laboratory. Results: Overall, 792/5200 cases of elderly cancer were collected representing 15.2% of all cancers diagnosed in the laboratory. The annual incidence was 39.6 cases. Patient age ranged from 65 to 103 years old, with a mean of 68.5 ± 4 years old. The sex ratio (m/F) was 1.3. At pathological level, the study material included pieces (n=290 cases;36.6%) and biopsies (n=502 cases;63.4%). Cancers located preferably in prostate in men (38%), and in women the most frequent locations were cervix (16.2%) and breast (15.8%). We noticed four histological groups: carcinomas (n = 706 cases;89.1%), sarcomas (n = 43 cases;5.5%), lymphoma (n = 34 cases;4.3%) and melanoma (n = 9 cases;1.1%). Carcinomas were dominated by adenocarcinomas (50.1%) and squamous cell carcinomas (33.8%);Kaposi’s sarcoma (32.6%) was the most common histological type in sarcomas. Conclusion: Our results showed that the elderly cancers were frequent in Togo, locating mostly in uterus cervix and breast in female, and prostate in men. This study could help to advocate the establishment of a cancer registry in Togo.

Assessment of Practice of Colonoscopy in Pediatrics in Brazzaville, Congo

Background: in Congo, there is no pediatric gastroenterology department and the activity of colonoscopy has never been evaluated. The aim of this study is to report the indications and the results of pediatric colonoscopy in Brazzaville. methods: A retrospective study was conducted from January 2016 to August 2017 by analyzing reports of colonoscopy performed in the gastroenterology department in Brazzaville. Sex, prescribers, indications and results of colonoscopy were the variables study. Results: over the 19-month period, 489 colonoscopies have been performed, in which 13 (2.7%) colonoscopies were performed in children under 17 years, with an average age of 9.8 ± 4.6 (8 males and 6 females) and the extreme ranging from 1 - 17 years. The sex ratio (H/F) was 1.6. The prescribers were gastroenterologist (n = 4), pediatrician (n = 4), surgeons (n = 2), general practitioners (n = 2), pediatric students (n = 1). Chronic bowel inflammatory diseases and polypectomy was the most frequent conditions for colonoscopy indication. Seven (7) colonoscopies were normal. 4 cases were recto-polyps, and 2 cases were ulcerative colitis. Conclusion: pediatric colonoscopy is a powerful diagnostic and therapeutic means. The pediatricians should think about it to improve the managem.nt of children with digestive symptoms that meet the indications of pediatric colonoscopy.

Controls of Soluble Al in Experimental Acid Sulfate Conditions and Acid Sulfate Soils

The controls of soluble Al concentration were examined in three situations of acid sulfate conditions: 1)experimental acid sulfate conditions by addition of varying amounts of Al(OH)3 (gibbsite) into a sequenceof H2SO4 solutions; 2) experimental acid sulfate conditions by addition of the same sequence of H2SO4solutions into two non-acid sulfate soil samples with known amounts of acid oxalate extractable Al; and3) actual acid sulfate soil conditions. The experiment using gibbsite as an Al-bearing mineral showed thatincrease in the concentration of H2SO4 solution increased the soluble Al concentration, accompanied bya decrease in the solution pH. increasing amount of gibbsite added to the H2SO4 solutions also increasedsoluble Al concentration, but resulted in an increase in solution pH. Within the H2SO4 concentration rangeof 0.0005～0.5 mol L-1 and the Al(OH)3 range of 0.01～0.5g (in 25 mL of H2SO4 solutions), the input ofH2SO4 had the major control on soluble Al concentration and pH. The availability of Al(OH)3, however, wasresponsible for the spread of the various sample points, with a tendency that the samples containing moregibbsite had a higher soluble Al concentration than those containing less gibbsite at equivalent pH *** experimental results from treatment of soil samples with H2SO4 solutions and the analytical results ofacid sulfate soils also showed the similar trend.

Antioxidant Activities of Ethanoilc Extracts of Spilanthes uliginosa, Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spicigera and Cymbopogon citratus against Swiss mice Exposed to Plasmodium berghei Anka 65

malaria infection is associated with increased generation of free radicals. This study investigated the antioxidant activity of ethanolic leaf extracts of Spilanthes uliginosa, Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spicigera and Cymbopogon citratus. Seventy two (72) swiss mice of both sexes were used. All the mice were treated intraperitoneally with 0.2 ml parasitized blood suspension and parasitemia assessed by thin blood films stained with Geimsa stain after seventy two hours. The mice were divided into six groups namely;A, B, C, D, E, and F of twelve mice each. Groups B, C, D and E were subdivided into three (3): B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3, D1, D2, D3, E1, E2 and E3, four in each subgroup. The subgroups were treated with the extracts of Spilanthes uliginosa (Sw), Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spiligera and Cymbopogon citratus each for five (5) consecutive days with 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight respectively via oral intubation. Two control groups, A and F were used. The negative control (A) was treated daily with 5 ml/kg normal saline while positive control group (F) was treated with 5 mg/kg body weight of chloroquine. The results indicated a general significant (P in the lipid peroxidation concentrations of the parasitized treated mice when compared to parasitized untreated mice on the last day. A general significant dose dependent increase (P in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione perioxidase activities as well as reduced glutathione concentrations in the treated mice except at a dosage of 200 mg/kg body weight for all the plants. The effects of the extracts were significantly higher (P n that of chloroquine. These results suggest that the ethanolic extracts of these plants may contribute to the protection of malaria infected mice against oxidative damage by improving antioxidant status in a dose dependent manner.

A wavelet-based super-resolution method for multi-slice mRi

in multi-slice magnetic resonance imaging (mRi), the resolution in the slice direction is usually reduced to allow faster acquisition times and to reduce the amount of noise in each 2D slice. To address this issue, a number of super resolution (SR) methods have been proposed to improve the resolution of 3D mRi volumes. most of the methods involve the use of prior models of the mRi data as regularization terms in an ill-conditioned inverse problem. The use of user-defined parameters produces better results for these approaches but an inappropriate choice may reduce the overall performance of the algorithm. in this paper, we present a wavelet domain SR method which uses a Gaussian scale mixture (GSm) model in a sparseness constraint to regularize the ill-posed SR inverse problem. The proposed approach also makes use of an extension of the Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform to provide the ability to analyze the wavelet coefficients with sub-level precision. Our results show that the 3D mRi volumes reconstructed using this approach have quality superior to volumes produced by the best previously proposed approaches.

Unexpected metastatic Recurrent myxofibrosarcoma: A Scenario That may Be more Common than You Think

Soft tissue sarcomas represent only 1% of all adult cancers;myxofibrosarcoma is the most common type that arises in adult extremities, particularly lower limbs (77%), other less common locations are the trunk (12%) and neck (3%). Usually presenting as a painless, subcutaneous, slow growing mass with tendency for recurrence, they are prone to have higher histological grade and metastatic potential after recurrence;even in optimal multidisciplinary settings patients can have incomplete resections, making metastatic disease more common after misdiagnosis. We present the case of a 69-year-old male patient with a right infraescapular tumor, presenting as a painless 15 × 8 cm, mobile mass, with a slow but progressive growth, history of a previous tumor excised at the same location 5 years prior without histopathological report.

Vegetation Response To Soil And morphological Properties in An Arid Region Alluvial Fan Landscape. Pre-Andes Of San Juan， Argentina

The monte Desert is characterized by a great diversity of landforms created with fluvial， alluvial which the vegetation patterns are related to. The present work has the following objectives: 1: determine whether topographical attributes， surface characteristics， soil properties and vegetation patterns vary between alluvial landforms， and 2: define whether morphometric， soil and surface properties influence vegetation patterns along alluvial landscape. morphometric data were obtained by processing a 5 m digital elevation model. The coverage of rock fragments， fine sediments and mulch was quantified. Observations and descriptions of the soil profiles were restricted to the uppermost 50 cm. Vegetation properties were calculated using a Point Quadrat method. The relationship between variables was evaluated through multivariate statistical analysis. The main results show the presence of 45 plant species distributed in 19 families， where shrubs are dominant. The wind effect， topographic wetness and dissection of the landscape are limiting factors of diversity. The coverage of superficial rock fragments influence vegetation coverage through the distribution and availability of rainwater. Furthermore， the different soil textures reveal that the silt content favors an increase in vegetation coverage. The presence of V horizon could condition the installation and development of vegetation in the early stages of growth.
