BACKGROUND A limited number of studies have demonstrated that sleeping in the left lateral decubitus(LLD)decreases nocturnal reflux in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)compared to right lateral decubitus(RLD)and *** This systematic review summarizes the association between sleeping in the LLD position and nocturnal reflux in patients with *** Studies published up to July 17,2023,in MEDLINE,EMBASE,and CENTRAL were *** studies were randomized and nonrandomized studies assessing the effect of sleeping in LLD compared to RLD and supine in reducing nocturnal reflux in GERD *** include the acid exposure time(AET)(%time in pH<4),acid clearance time(ACT)(in sec/episode),number of reflux episodes,and improvement in N-GSSIQ *** Two nonrandomized studies showed decreased AET and ACT in LLD sleep position in comparison to RLD(mean difference[MD]-2.03[95%CI:-3.62 to-0.45];-81.84[95%CI:-127.48 to-36.20],respectively)and supine position(MD-2.71[95%CI:-4.34 to-1.09];-74.47[95%CI:-116.26 to-32.69],respectively).There was no difference in AET and ACT between RLD sleep position and ***,one randomized controlled trial investigating the use of electronic sleep positional therapy,which increased the duration of LLD sleep and decreased the duration of RLD sleep compared to sham,showed nocturnal symptoms improvement(improved N-GSSIQ score,increased reflux-free nights,and resolution of nocturnal reflux symptoms).CONCLUSION Current evidence suggests that sleeping on the left side could reduce nocturnal reflux and improve GERD-related quality of life,therefore warranting interventions that promote LLD sleep position.

Regenerative medicine requires new ways to assemble and manipulate cells for fabrication of tissue-like constructs. Here we report a novel approach for cell surface engineering of human cells using polymer-stabilized magnetic nanoparticles （MNPs）. Cationic polyelectrolyte-coated MNPs are directly deposited onto cellular membranes, producing a mesoporous semi-permeable layer and rendering cells magnetically responsive. Deposition of MNPs can be completed within minutes, under cell-friendly conditions （room temperature and physiologic media）. Microscopy （TEM, SEM, AFM, and enhanced dark-field imaging） revealed the intercalation of nanoparticles into the cellular microvilli network. A detailed viability investigation was performed and suggested that MNPs do not inhibit membrane integrity, enzymatic activity, adhesion, proliferation, or cytoskeleton formation, and do not induce apoptosis in either cancer or primary cells. Finally, magnetically functionalized cells were employed to fabricate viable layered planar （two-cell layers） cell sheets and 3D multicellular spheroids.

Two different types of graphene flakes were produced following solution processing methods and dispersed using shear mixing in a bifunctional(A) and a multifunctional(B) epoxy resin at a concentration of 0.8 and 0.6 wt%, respectively. The graphene/epoxy resin mixtures were used to impregnate unidirectional carbon fibre tapes. These prepregs were stacked(seven plies) and cured to produce *** interlaminar fracture toughness(mode-I) of the carbon fiber/graphene epoxy laminates with resin B showed over 56% improvement compared with the laminate without graphene. Single lap joints were prepared using the laminates as adherents and polyurethane adhesives(Sika 7666 and Sika 7888). The addition of graphene improved considerably the adhesion strength from 3.3 to 21 MPa(sample prepared with resin A and Sika 7888) highlighting the potential of graphene as a secondary filler in carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites.

AIM:To describe the cardiovascular disease(CVD)risk factors in a population of children with celiac disease(CD)on a gluten-free diet(GFD).METHODS:This cross-sectional multicenter study was performed at Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel(Petach Tiqva,Israel),and San Paolo Hospital(Milan,Italy).We enrolled 114 CD children in serologic remission,who were on a GFD for at least one *** enrollment,anthropometric measurements,blood lipids and glucose were assessed,and compared to values at *** homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance was calculated as a measure of insulin ***:Three or more concomitant CVD risk factors[body mass index,waist circumference,low density lipoprotein(LDL)cholesterol,triglycerides,blood pressure and insulin resistance]were identified in 14%of CD subjects on a *** most common CVD risk factors were high fasting triglycerides(34.8%),elevated blood pressure(29.4%),and high concentrations of calculated LDL cholesterol(24.1%).On a GFD,four children(3.5%)had insulin *** insulin and HOMA-IR were significantly higher in the Italian cohort compared to the Israeli cohort(P<0.001).Children on a GFD had an increased prevalence of borderline LDL cholesterol(24%)when compared to values(10%)at diagnosis(P=0.090).Trends towards increases in overweight(from 8.8%to 11.5%)and obesity(from 5.3%to 8.8%)were seen on a ***:This report of insulin resistance and CVD risk factors in celiac children highlights the importance of CVD screening,and the need for dietary counseling targeting CVD prevention.

AIM: To characterize the influence of location, species and treatment upon RNA degradation in tissue samples from the gastrointestinal tract. METHODS: The intestinal samples were stored in different medium for different times under varyingconditions: different species(human and rat), varying temperature(storage on crushed ice or room temperature), time point of dissection of the submucous-mucous layer from the smooth muscle(before or after storage), different rinsing methods(rinsing with Medium, PBS, RNALater or without rinsing at all) and different regions of the gut(proximal and distal small intestine, caecum, colon and rectum). The total RNA from different parts of the gut(rat: proximal and distal small intestine, caecum, colon and rectum, human: colon and rectum) and individual gut layers(muscle and submucosal/mucosal) was extracted. The quality of the RNA was assessed by micro capillary electrophoresis. The RNA quality was expressed by the RNA integrity number which is calculated from the relative height and area of the 18 S and 28 S RNA peaks. From rat distal small intestine q PCR was performed for neuronal and glial ***: RNA obtained from smooth muscle tissue is much longer stable than those from submucosal/mucosal tissue. At RT muscle RNA degrades after one day, on ice it is stable at least three days. Cleaning and separation of gut layers before storage and use of RNALater, maintains the stability of muscle RNA at RT for much longer periods. Different parts of the gut show varying degradation periods. RNA obtained from the submucosal/mucosal layer always showed a much worse amplification rate than RNA from muscle tissue. In general RNA harvested from rat tissue, either smooth muscle layer or submucosal/mucosal layer is much longer stable than RNA from human gut tissue, and RNA obtained from smooth muscle tissue shows an increased stability compared to RNA from submucosal/mucosal tissue. A simple device which incorporates three electrodes （working electrode, counter electrode and reference electrode） was constructed to be used currently in laboratories without elevated cost. It does not need more than 2 μL of electrolyte, sample or working solution, his support material is paper, and the working electrode which is based on carbon ink can incorporate enzymes and cofactors. To test this concept we started this investigation using the NADH/NAD＋ redox couple which is an onmipresent coenzyme in living systems but is also a challenge to electrochemistry. The paper sensor fabrication was simple, rapid and cheaper. NADH was incorporated in the carbon ink by mixing both and, this mixture was used to print the working electrode. The direct electrochemical system NADH/NAD＋ signal obtained, using this device, appeared at low potentials. A quasi-reversible diffusional redox process was achieved and regeneration of the NADH after oxidation was reached. This small paper device was not only used to study the redox process of NAD＋/NADH, but also its behavior in the presence of electroactive （ascorbic acid） and non-eletroactive species （glucose）.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) affects nearly half of the world’s population and, thus, is one of the most frequent and persistent bacterial infections worldwide. H. pylori is associated with peptic ulcer disease, gastric ulcers, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and gastric cancer. Various diagnostic methods exist to detect infection, and the choice of one method or another depends on several factors, such as accessibility, advantages and disadvantages of each method, cost, and the age of patients. Once H. pylori infection is diagnosed, the clinician decides whether treatment is necessity, according to the patient’s clinical condition. Typically, eradication of H. pylori is recommended for treatment and prevention of the infection. Cure rates with the standard triple therapy are acceptable, and effective quadruple therapies, sequential therapies, and concomitant therapies have been introduced as key alternatives to treat H. pylori infection. In this work, we review the main diagnostic methods used to identify H. pylori infection and to confirm eradication of infection. In addition, key factors related to treatment are reviewed.
