Nutritional Status of Mothers and Its Determinants in Alemtidad Area, Khartoum

Background: Nutritional status of mothers is considered one of the major problems facing mothers in the world. The nutrition plays a major role in mothers and child health. Objective: This study aims to assess mothers’ nutritional status and its determinants in Alemtidad area, Khartoum. Methods: A descriptive community based survey was conducted in the Alemtidad area of Khartoum between November 2012 and December 2012. One hundred and eighty mothers were selected by simple randomization. Data were collected by using structured designed questionnaire which was then analyzed by (SPSS) program version 20. Results: The study conducted among mothers in Alemtidad area;their age ranged between 19 and 86 years with the mean age 38 ± 12 years. From those mothers about half were unemployed, and having mainly primary and secondary educational level. 81.1% of mothers were not able to select the proper food according to age and nutrients and about 71.1% of mothers took two meals per day and 23.3% one meals per day, and only 5.6 take three meals per day. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated to measure the nutrition status of mothers;this study shows that mothers in Alemtidad are mainly overweight and obese, 45.6% and 18% respectively and only 35% within normal range of Body Mass Index (BMI). Conclusion: The study concludes that mothers are either overweight or obese (45.6%, 17.7% respectively). Compared to national and international statistics the findings of this study reflect high Body Mass Index (BMI) of mothers in Alemtidad.

Fibrinogen Levels in Hypertensive and Normotensive: A Cross-Sectional Study from El-Obied City, Sudan

Hypertension (HTN) has been defined as a blood pressure level at which an otherwise healthy person would have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease that could be mitigated through blood pressure-lowering treatment. Worldwide, hypertension is one of the most common causes of death. The prevalence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease increases with age, and has been found to be higher in those of South Asian and African ancestry, and in Aboriginal populations. Hypertension is not only one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but also the number one modifiable risk factor for stroke. Alterations in blood coagulation system have been reported in patients of hypertension. Fibrinogen has been identified as a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted in Elobied teaching hospital during period from March to June 2014. The aim of this study is to determine the level of fibrinogen among hypertensive patients. Seventy percent of the patients (about 35 patients) had high fibrinogen level above 400 mg/dl compared with the control and about 30% (15 patients) were within the normal range of 200 mg - 400 mg/dl. This study has concluded that there was a significant increase in fibrinogen level in hypertensive patients compared to control, while the gender has no effect on the level of fibrinogen.

The nature and origin of the photon and elementary rest masses are some of the challeng-ing problems that physics face. The approaches used to solve these problems are complex and time-consuming. Specifically, the photon rest mass pays attention to theoretical physi-cists. Many experimental works show that the photon rest mass is non zero. This problem can be solved using generalized potential dependent special relativity, which has been de-rived using simple arguments, and Maxwell’s equations, besides the conventional Einstein energy-momentum relation. The results obtained show that the rest mass of photons and elementary particles are strongly dependent on the vacuum energy and a universal con-stant. This result conforms with the models that predict time decaying vacuum energy as-sociated with production of smaller rest mass particles followed by larger masses. The two potential dependent mass expressions conform with the cosmological models that suggest the photon is generated first by assuming the universe consisting of total constant vacuum with decaying cosmological part and mass generating part. Using Maxwell’s equations, beside plank and De Broglie hypothesis together with special relativity energy-momentum relation the photon rest mass is estimated. It was shown that the photon rest mass is ex-tremely small compared to the electron mass.

Tracing of the Avenue of the Ram-Headed Sphinxes Remains Using Geophysical Investigations, Luxor, Egypt

Throughout 3000 years ago, over the New Kingdom in the Pharaonic period, the Ram-headed Sphinxes Avenue connected Karnak and the Temples of Luxor, a processional avenue was lined on both sides by 1200 statues of sphinxes. The lining of the avenue was erased. Centuries over centuries this avenue has been buried with its statues under about 2 m of silt and sand, and urban development covered it with housing, asphaltic streets, and other structures, obscuring its route and interrupting this dramatic connection. This paper focuses on the discovery of some of these Sphinx statuses and remains at a suggested part of the avenue using both near-surface magnetic and shallow seismic refraction methods. A gradiometer survey was conducted in an area that amounted 576 m2 as (48 m?× 12 m) to measure the vertical magnetic gradient with a high resolution instrument with 0.25 m sampling interval. A superior detection was accomplished by using the analytic signal and Euler deconvolution techniques. The shallow seismic refraction survey was done in the same area to illustrate the lithology of layers material with 1 m interval;both P and S waves were measured to calculate the geotechnical properties of the area to sustain the sketch of structures’ boundaries. We have lucratively detected six main structures;they can be the pedestal of these Ram-headed Sphinx statues. Mining a small part of the study area has proven the reliability of, both the magnetic and shallow seismic refraction discoveries, and the shallowness and composition of the detected features.

Outcome of Renal Transplantation at ahmed Gasim Cardiac and Renal Transplant Centre in Sudan-2014

Background: Although not life-saving procedures like liver or heart transplantation, renal transplantation is the preferred treatment for many patients with end-stage renal disease because it improves patients’ quality of life, while other forms of renal replacement therapy (RRT) such as haemodialysis (HDX) shown to regain only 10% of the patient’s renal function [1]. Transplantation releases patients from the dietary and fluid restrictions and the physical constraints imposed by other forms of (RRT), patients become able to return to their normal activities. Patient’s 5-year survival is higher post transplant. Patients and methods: This is Descriptive, retro-prospective, cross sectional analytic and multicentre study done in ahmed Gasim Cardiac and Renal Transplant Centre including 105 patients. After meeting the Inclusion Criteria and exclusion Criteria, then cases were selected and written in constructed questionnaire. The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcome of renal transplantation in Sudan. Results: 105 cases were used with male predominate and ratio male to female ratio 3:1, the main age of presentation between 31 - 45 years, most of the patients discharge uneventful with good outcome. During one-year follow-up following renal transplantation. Patient survival 95.2 % graft survival 82.4%. Overall morbidity shows 70.5%. Conclusion: this study showed that the one-year patient survival of 95.2%. Actuarial one-year graft survival of 92.4%. Renal transplantation complications can be reduced by meticulous preoperative workup including good cardiovascular assessment, tissue mismatch and BMI good postoperative follow up for early detection of graft rejection and long-term complications and finally patient education.

The Relationship between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Resistin Levels in Saudi Diabetic Patients

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and the adipokine resistin in Saudi diabetic patients and those at high risk to develop atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Methodology: One hundred and sixty seven subjects were recruited for the cross-sectional study at King Fahad Medical City, Saudi Arabia. Blood samples were analyzed for biochemical parameters. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and resistin levels were measured for all the participants. Result: Fifty six type-1, 55 type-2 diabetic patients and 56 healthy controls were recruited. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level in the control group was 44.21 ± 41.80 μg/ml compared to 50.67 ± 35.60 μg/ml in the diabetic group (P = 0.427) with no significant different between type-2 diabetes mellitus and type-1 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.628). Resistin level in the control group was 14.00 ± 7.39μg/ml compared to 20.21 ± 16.94 μg/ml in the diabetic group (P ≤ 0.01), no significant difference between type-2 diabetes mellitus and type-1 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.817). Resistin in those taking vitamin D supplementation was 21.34 ± 18.27 μg/ml;and in those not taking vitamin D supplementation, it was 17.4 ± 11.19 μg/ml;(P = 0.237). There was significant negative correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and resistin in type-2 diabetes mellitus (P ≤ 0.043) and no significant correlation was found between vitamin 25 (OH) D and resistin level in type-1 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.538). Blood urea and creatinine showed significant positive correlation with vitamin 25 (OH) D in one hand and resistin level on the other hand. Discussion and Conclusions: Several in vitro and in vivo studies have confirmed that the vitamin 25 (OH) D have numerous important functions in the body. The circulating vitamin 25 (OH) D and resistin levels were associated with general inflammation in renal diseases. The Dilemma of the Nile Transboundary Water and the Way Forward

The NB (Nile River Basin) is considered one of the most important basins in Africa, as over 33% of the African population lives in its riparian countries. Out of the latter about 50% live in the NB. In this paper a historical background on the NB cooperation evolvement including the recent NBI (NB Initiative) is briefly reported. The natural and human challenges facing the Nile water management are examined and discussed. The present dilemma among the Nile riparian countries is highlighted and its reasons are explained. The latter includes the NB CFA (Cooperative Framework Agreement), which has been signed by six countries (Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) while rejected by Egypt, Sudan and not signed by DR of Congo. Eretria and the newly established country "South Sudan" stands are not yet clear. Based on scientific methodology and analytical discussion, a number of solutions for better management of the trans-boundary Nile waters are drawn; taking into consideration the experiences of other international rivers shared basins. Finally, the paper concludes with recommendations and guidelines that may help in the way forward.

Assessment of Levels of Knowledge towards Hormonal Related Breast Cancer Risk Factors in Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia

Background: Continued exposure to sex hormones such as estrogen is a critical risk for subsequent breast cancer. Thus the present study aimed to assess the levels of knowledge towards hormonal related breast cancer risk factors in Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This descriptive study included 737 Saudi volunteers living in the city of Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia. For females, only those agreeing to participate in the breast self-examination workshop were included, and non-respondents were included in the questionnaire. Results: For the question apropos “Inheritance as a risk factor for BC,” 405/607 (66.7%) females signposted certainly “Yes,” as well as, 70/130 (54%) males signposted certainly “Yes.” The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were not statistically significant, but the level of knowledge was relatively higher among females OR (95% CI) = 1.4321 (0.9597 to 2.1370), P = 0.0786. “Are early puberty and late menopause risk factors for breast cancer?” No statistical significant differences were eminent between males and females, OR (95% CI) = 0.8878 (0.5932 to 1.3287), P = 0.5629. Conclusion: Saudi women are enthusiastically willing to raise their knowledge and awareness of breast cancer prevention and control. Although women have greater knowledge about breast cancer risk factors compared to men, still some gaps need to be filled.
